2019 VINTAGE DISTRICTS OF MCLAREN VALE TASTING - SAMPLES REQUIRED
This is a reminder call for samples of single block 2019 McLaren Vale Shiraz for the Districts of McLaren Vale tasting.
The annual Districts Tasting is critical to increasing our understanding of the differences that potentially exist between the proposed districts. We
encourage your participation in this important project as additional wines for the tasting will result in more meaningful findings. As such, please feel free to share this email with your neighbours and within your networks in the region.
REQUIREMENTS: 3 x 750 ml bottles of each wine submitted
DELIVERY: Monday 3rd February, 10am - 4pm OR Tuesday 4th February 2020, 10am - 2 pm
All samples must be received in this time frame.
Please deliver to Wirra Wirra, R.S. Wigley room.
Please do NOT deliver to MVGWTA office.
If delivery will be an issue and alternative arrangements need to be made, please contact Rachel at MVGWTA.
NOTES: Please draw down samples as close as possible to the delivery date to maintain the freshness of the wines.
It is important that the wines have minimal oak and other winemaking influence as this can mask the site characteristics in the wine.
When delivering the samples, the location of the block(s) will need to be pinpointed on the displayed Geology map. There will be Districts of McLaren Vale Working Group members present to assist and provide information about the project.
One of the sample bottles will be tasted on Wednesday 5th February 2020 under controlled conditions by the Districts of McLaren Vale panel. The remaining bottles will be used in the tutorial on Friday morning and also available at the public tasting prior to the Bell Ringing Ceremony.
The District Public Tasting is to be held at Wirra Wirra on Friday 7th February 2020 from 10am.
We ask that each producer limits samples to a maximum of 3 samples per district to avoid cellar styles influencing the findings, but encourage producers to submit
samples from multiple districts if possible. We sincerely hope you are able to support this project by submitting numerous 2018 vintage McLaren Vale Shiraz single block wines, and we look forward to seeing you at the tasting at Wirra.
Over the past nine years there has been considerable effort in investigating if there are distinct districts within McLaren Vale. Based on geology, topography, elevation and climate, the MVGWTA Districts Working Group have suggested the potential existence of 19 unique districts in McLaren Vale.
Since 2009 the Districts Working Group have conducted annual tastings to investigate if there are any identifiable flavour, tannin and textural characteristics attributable to each district. This investigation is a continual work in progress and a long term project. Annual findings help us gain a better understanding of our complex region and determine if district specific wine differences exist.
This ongoing research can only be carried out with the support of McLaren Vale’s wine producers as it requires as many wines to be submitted as possible to ensure that the tasting demonstrates and showcases relevance and substance.
required are 2019 vintage McLaren Vale Shiraz wines produced from a single vineyard block (or a couple of blocks in close proximity); matured in older or fairly neutral oak, newer oak is acceptable if you believe that the oak hasn’t dominated the site characteristics.
Unoaked tank samples are also encouraged.
