Plastic Bag Ban & Paper Bag Fee Starting March 1
Photo: Renovated 6 Train station, January 2019
Starting March 1, 2020, New York State law will prohibit businesses from distributing plastic carryout bags - where over 23 billion plastic bags are typically used each year.

In addition, businesses in New York City will be required to charge a five-cent fee for each paper carryout bag. This fee will not apply to any customers using SNAP or WIC.

Businesses will receive an official notice in the mail this month about the upcoming ban and fee.

For those interested, Speaker Corey Johnson's office is distributing reusable bags out of their district office at 224 West 30th Street, Suite 1206.
