Better chance of recovery from a low-frequency sudden hearing loss

A study among persons with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) has found that the chance of recovery is much higher if the sudden hearing loss is in the lower frequencies.

The study found that complete hearing recovery was observed in around 78% of the patients in the low-tone SSHL group and in 15% of the patients in the high-tone SSHL group. The patients in both groups in the study were treated with intravenous steroids.

The study, which is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 35 other scientific studies, found that hearing loss is associated with a 47% higher risk of depression in older adults. The 35 studies from 18 countries consisted of a total of 147,148 participants.

In New Zealand, one in eight adults say they have a hearing loss

he New Zealand Trak 2018 survey on hearing loss and the use of hearing aids in New Zealand shows that 12.3% of adult New Zealanders think they have hearing loss. Among all New Zealanders, including those under 18 years of age, 10.1 % say that they have a hearing loss.

The figure is a bit higher than similar surveys in Europe in the recent years, where the average was 10% - or one in ten - of adults reporting that they think they have a hearing loss.

WHO: Hearing loss is a risk factor in cognitive decline and dementia

WHO has in 2019 published “Risk reduction of cognitive decline and dementia – WHO guidelines”.

Work and leisure activities can cause hearing problems

Preschool teachers

Working as a preschool teacher puts your hearing at risk. A Swedish study has found that working in a preschool significantly increases the risk of hearing related problems, including increased risk of tinnitus and hearing loss.

Working in mining, oil and gas extraction

If you are you working in mining, oil and gas extraction, you are in an increased the risk of hearing loss. An American study finds that there is a high prevalence of hearing loss in the mining sector and in some subsectors within oil and gas extraction.

Work noise affects hearing

Chinese workers who are exposed to high levels of work noise have a high prevalence of hearing loss, a study finds. The Chinese study examined workers who were exposed to occupational noise. The study found that hearing difficulty was more prevalent in the noise-exposed group (higher than 85 dBA). Workers with high noise exposure were more likely to have a higher hearing threshold value than low exposure ones.

Playing in a school band?

If you are playing in a school band, you should mind your hearing.

An American study found that playing in a middle or a high school band can result in a minor noise-induced hearing loss. People who play in middle or high school bands have an increased risk of a minor noise-induced hearing loss at some frequencies.

Surfer's ears

If you are a surfer, you are at risk of getting surfer's ears, also know as exostosis. More than 80% of Australian surfers suffer from external auditory exostosis (surfer's ear), according to a study.

In the study, auditory exostosis was diagnosed in 95% of the professional surfers and in 83 % of the recreational surfers. Most of the surfers had external auditory exostosis in both ears.

12.3% of adults in New Zealand say that they have a hearing loss. 41.6% use hearing aids, according to the survey New Zealand Trak 2018.

Asian studies

Hearing loss is common among older Taiwanese people. Four out of ten older Taiwanese people have a hearing loss, according to a Taiwanese study.

Nearly 30% of the participants in a Chinese study had a speech frequency hearing loss and more than 40% had a high-frequency hearing loss. Another Chinese study found that Chinese workers who are exposed to high levels of work noise have a high prevalence of hearing loss.

A Korean study found that 17% of adolescents in the study had at least some form of hearing loss.

Not aware - and selective hearing

Many Canadians are not aware of their hearing loss. Only 6% of Canadians aged 40 to 79 say they have a hearing loss. But when measured, 54% have at least a mild hearing loss, according to data from Statistics Canada.

More than half of the participants in a British survey are concerned about their partner''s hearing. Three quarters of Britons in the survey believe their partner has ''selective hearing'' - and men are ''worse'' than women.

Greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia with a hearing loss

Hearing loss - a large risk factor

In a report on prevention, intervention and care, the Lancet Commission mentions a list of 12 risk factors for dementia. Untreated hearing loss is the largest single risk factor. In the report, untreated hearing loss accounts for 8%, a fifth of the total risk factor of 40%.

Taiwanese study

Hearing loss is positively associated with a risk of dementia, especially in people aged 45 to 64 years, a Taiwanese study finds. The dementia incidence rate in the hearing loss group in the study was higher than that in the non-hearing loss group.

Longer duration and more severe

Both more severe and prolonged age-related hearing loss are associated with a higher prevalence of cognitive disorder, a study finds.? The prevalence of dementia in people with mild, moderate, moderate to severe and severe hearing loss was 10.5%, 11.5%, 12.2% and 14% respectively. In the study, the prevalence of dementia was significantly higher in patients with hearing loss for 10 years or more than in patients with hearing loss for less than 10 years.

Use of hearing aids
