In this second of a three part series on AI in Scholarly Research presented by the Charleston Conference,  Ruth Pickering, Co-Founder and COO at Yewno, and Michael Keller, University Librarian & Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning at Stanford University, discuss artificial intelligence (AI) in the research library environment.

Says Keller:  "For those who picture well-worn books and archival collections when they think of academic libraries, it may not be immediately apparent how libraries can both benefit from and shape applications of artificial intelligence. Libraries are the nexus of the preservation of memory and the future of knowledge production, both of which are key to successful applications of AI. Though the popular vision of AI is almost entirely a futuristic vision, machine intelligence is fueled entirely by past human creation and collection, whether it is remote-sensing data gathered yesterday or manuscripts from centuries past. Ordering and contextualizing that information is an essential part of knowledge creation. Speech-to-text translation, image similarity search, and word embeddings, accelerated by algorithmic processing, are already changing how we discover and interact with information online. Finding the right information to answer a query, finding a novel resource to drive innovative research agenda, those require the kind of human expertise found in the library and we need to bring that expertise to the design of AI."

While it's important to capitalize on fresh content while it is novel and popular, in scholarly publishing there is great value in backlist titles. Information doesn't lose value with age; it provides perspective, context and in many cases remains evergreen. So how can publishers make sure they're capitalizing on their entire collections?

Artificial Intelligence offers an alternative and enhancement to traditional curation tools. Using AI, publishers can make the switch from traditional keyword categorization to concept-based searching. Weis, a researcher in the MIT Media Lab, the founder and lead of the MIT Network Intelligence Program, and a doctoral candidate in the MIT Computational and Systems Biology program, discuss the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) in the academic publishing ecosystem.

Ruth Pickering is the curator of a new title in the Charleston Briefings series, and James W. Weis is the author of a chapter on the same subject as the webinar.

Says Weis, "Technology underpins all aspects of today's academic publishing ecosystem. But only recently have AI-based platforms-systems that employ learning and other humanlike or rule-based behavior-begun to affect scholarly publishing.

However, the vast amounts of digital content and data output by the publishing ecosystem provide fertile ground for the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methodologies to the production and consumption of research content. On the one hand, data-driven algorithms can provide consumers of academic literature with more efficient ways of identifying and-subsequently-assessing the value and relevance of research content via smarter search, better disambiguation, and improved metrics.

On the other hand, academic publishers can use AI techniques to assist in intelligent targeting and curation of research, such as post-publication impact measures, sentiment analysis, and improved methods of plagiarism detection and reproducibility testing."
