How to find reliable legal information online

When searching for legal information online, it is important to be eagle-eyed! Some web resources are accurate and reliable, while others can be misleading.

Here are some things to think about when looking for legal information online:

Make sure that your search includes where you live (for example, if you live in England or Wales put �England and Wales� in your search) so that you only get legal information results that apply where you live.
Think about who has written the information - if this is not clear by looking at the site - for example on the About us page then try and find another source of information.
Is the information up to date? Reliable websites usually put the date somewhere to tell you when that information was written or updated. If there is no date it may mean the information is out of date. Try looking elsewhere.
Be careful about the kind of websites you rely on. Government websites (�.gov.uk�) will have reliable legal information and so will reputable charities and non-governmental organisations. Be aware that some companies have sites that charge for services that you can get for free or a lot less by going through the gov.uk site.

Welcome to this month�s boost to your legal problem solving skills and reminder of ways our help could save you stress and money.

Are you, or someone you know, going through a break up and worried about how to sort out arrangements for your children?

Going through a break up is pretty tough for anyone but if you have children too it can be even harder. Agreeing with your ex on arrangements about who looks after the children - when and where - can be very difficult. Here are a few pointers to get you started:

Keep explaining to the children that this is between the adults. It is not their fault. And that you know that this is hard for them and you are sorry.
Tell them repeatedly that you both still love them and you will always be their family.
It�s easier said than done, but try not to blame the other parent or talk about them in an unhelpful way in front of your children. Find other ways to blow off steam.
Give loads of extra cuddles.
Let the children�s schools and anyone else who looks after them know - they are likely to need a bit of extra care and attention from everybody for a bit.

There are three major things to sort out.

Where the children will live.
When and how you will ensure they have time with both parents.
How you will continue to pay for all the things they need.

It is usually best for everyone if you can reach agreements about how best to look after your children when you separate. Sometimes mediation can help people work out problems that seem insurmountable right now. Here is your monthly boost to your legal problem solving skills and a reminder of ways our help could save you stress and money.

Do you know someone who feels unsafe at home?

Do you know someone who is walking on egg shells when their partner is at home? Does that partner control where the person you care about goes or who they spend time with? Has that partner been violent or threatening? It may be that how that partner behaves towards the person you are worried about would actually be viewed as abusive by the Family Court.

Abuse in the home, often called domestic violence or abuse, can affect anyone at any time. It can be really hard for the person suffering it to see that this is happening to them.

It may be that the person you are worried about could apply to the Family Court for protection from domestic abuse. It can be hard and scary to know where to go for help in such a situation. So, we have made a short film that explains where to get free help from. Our film goes on to explain how to do the form for the Family Court to get an order, often called an injunction.
