One of the best ways to deliver the biggest impact during this crisis is through our Albertans Helping Albertans Fund. All types of cancer, all across the province, during this pandemic and beyond.

Last week, we celebrated our amazing volunteers for all the work they do to support the Alberta Cancer Foundation! From the volunteers who support our day-to-day activities in our office, to our event day volunteers and committee members of our signature events – such as the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, Alberta Cancer Foundation Golf Classic to name a few. Registration is now open for our latest virtual fundraiser! The Albertans Helping Albertans Virtual 5K is a province-wide fundraiser that raises funds for the 17 Alberta Health Services cancer centres across the province.

Participants can choose to individually run or walk a minimum of 5 kilometres in support of the cancer centre in their area.?

Every donation made will help drive the individual needs and vital services of the chosen centre, where world-class equipment, technology and personnel can help change the lives of patients as well as their families.

This event is a fun and safe way to practice social distancing while supporting fellow Albertans facing cancer. ?

Wellspring runs programs ranging from educational talks to exercise and art classes, while also providing a space for patients and their families to connect and experience community support.

In partnership with the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the organization is now looking to bring some of that support and programming to rural Alberta with two three-year pilot programs.

“In regional and rural areas of Alberta, support is often absent. It is essential for communities to build their resilience, not only for cancer patients, but for their immediate family, as well. If we don’t take that on, we’re leaving out an entire population,” Says Wellspring Edmonton CEO, Martin Dugas.

In April, we shared some difficult news about one of our favourite - and most important - weekends of the year. It is with heavy hearts that we are postponing the 2020 Alberta Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer until 2021. ?

We have so much to be proud of when it comes to the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. Our Riders have created so many moments - countless moments -for Albertans facing cancer over the years. We look forward to continuing this conversation in 2021. ?

We are considering an option for a virtual ride but are sensitive to the fact that our economy is struggling, and individual, family and corporate situations have also changed. We will keep you updated as we delve further into this idea.

April 5 – 10 was Adolescent and Young Adults (AYA) Cancer Awareness Week. Cancer changes anyone’s life but the anxiety associated with a new diagnosis and the treatment that follows can be especially intense for someone just beginning their adult life.?

In 2014, Alberta Health Services began its AYA Patient Navigator program. AYA patient navigators, funded by Alberta Cancer Foundation donors, are specially trained registered nurses who work with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to empower young adults to live well with and beyond cancer. ?

An Alberta-based innovation, Text4Hope is a new Alberta Health Services program launched during the COVID-19 pandemic with a set of daily messages for three months. People will receive advice and encouragement written by mental health therapists with helpful tips to develop healthy personal coping skills and resiliency during this unprecedented time of isolation and fear.

A break-through immunotherapy approach happening right here at home

Edmonton researcher Dr. Michael Chu is bringing CAR T-cell clinical trials to Alberta. CAR T-cell therapy is a breakthrough immunotherapy approach that involves collecting and using the patient’s own immune cells to treat their cancer.

With the support of Alberta Cancer Foundation donors, Dr. Chu is leading the development of a clinical trial to manufacture CAR T-cells in Alberta to treat leukemia and lymphoma.

“For decades we’ve been relying on surgery, chemo, and radiation, [but] immunotherapy has really changed how we look at oncology. We can now target the actual cancer cells directly through this treatment. It’s changed melanoma from an entirely palliative disease to something where about 50 to 60 per cent of patients are cured of it.” - Dr. Michael Chu. ??

The born-and-raised Edmontonian who did his medical training at the University of Alberta is a member of the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA), and currently practicing at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. ?

26 year old Amy Reding processes her grief surrounding cancer through her artwork which is inspired by the strength she sees in women facing cancer and loss. She is now selling her art prints with proceeds going towards our Patient Financial Assistance Program.

I have experienced levels of compassion and love that I never knew before, and I have learned to love myself in new ways: bald head, scars, and all. In the heart of Edmonton''s historic Highlands neighborhood sits the Magrath Mansion. Built in 1912 by William Magrath, a businessman and real estate developer of the time, this stunning century-old home is opening its doors virtually this holiday season - and you are invited!

Sid and Nellie Braaksma purchased the home in 2000, restoring each room to its original glory. Sadly in 2019, Sid passed away from cancer, and the family have made the difficult decision to sell the home.

The Braaksma family have created a virtual tour of the Magrath Mansion, in support of the Cross Cancer Institute. They do this in memory of Sid Braaksma, family patriarch, his granddaughter Korinda Kostiw, and their uncle Tony Van Orizande, who all received care at the Cross Cancer Institute.

They do have one request; please donate generously, and help them leave a legacy of hope for more moments for patients, and their families, facing cancer.

On May 20^th, we launched Research Rockstar Stream-a-thon, a live, virtual event to support the best and brightest medical oncologists and researchers behind cancer clinical trials in Alberta. Over 200 people tuned in and raised $10,000 in two hours!

The virtual event consisted of a Calgary and Edmonton segment, featuring patients, clinical trial directors, medical oncologists and researchers from the Cross Cancer Institute and Tom Baker Cancer Centre. The stream-a-thon was hosted by Steve Klintberg-Nagy, noted for his work as the emcee of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer in Alberta. We also had a special musical message from our friends of the foundation and beloved Alberta band, The Dungarees!

Being a young adult with cancer has its unique challenges. Twenty-six year old, Tanner Hutchinson shares what he''s had to face since being diagnosed with lymphoma.

“Anxiety is a huge one. Being told that you have a rare form of cancer that’s very aggressive and tough to treat? Told that you have four days to decide if they want to have children in the future? The thoughts that go through your head are endless. Am I going to survive? How will I pay my bills? How am I going to beat this? People treat you differently. You’re a patient. You’re not the same person anymore. It’s a weird feeling but it’s the truth.”?

May is Leave a Legacy Month. Many people like to leave a gift to a cancer-free future in their will. May Pringle is one of hundreds of donors who have made this choice.

May survived uterine cancer and melanoma and her husband, Bill, was successfully treated for prostate cancer during their 52-year marriage. Their story is a true testament to progress made. That’s why the decision to name the Alberta Cancer Foundation in her will was an easy one for May.

Dr. John Mackey, Director of Clinical Trials at the Cross Cancer Institute and University of Alberta cell biologist Luc Berthiaume are hoping to begin human clinical trials for a promising anti-cancer drug later this year. This was made possible thanks to several investors including the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

“This is one of the most exciting opportunities I’ve ever had in my 25-year career. It’s not often that you get a chance to try something truly novel, totally new, and have the potential to make such a big difference,” says Dr. John Mackey.

In May, we launched our very first Virtual 5K fundraiser to support the 17 Alberta Health Services cancer centres across the province. ?Over 400 Albertans participated by running or walking a minimum of 5 kilometres at their convenience and virtually fundraising in support of the cancer centre of their choice.?

The Crist Family Foundation, a generous and loyal supporter of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, graciously offered to match all donations to the Albertans Helping Albertans Virtual 5K event up to $25,000. To date, we have raised $115,000!

The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer went virtual this year, meaning participants could ride anywhere, any time and for any distance in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Over the past 11 years, the Ride has helped raise more than $80 million to improve cancer treatment, research and care in Alberta.

In August, the Alberta Cancer Foundation hosted a series of drive-in events – including live screening of the Calgary Flames playoff games - at the Calgary Stampede grounds.

Funds raised were in support of groundbreaking cancer research, treatment and care for cancer patients in Alberta. The Albertans Helping Albertans Drive-in for Charity event was in partnership with 1 Pop Up, with the support of our generous sponsors PCL Construction, Enmax and Landmark Cinemas.

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the Government of Alberta to help provide $15 million towards CAR-T cell therapy, a game-changing cancer treatment. Alberta will now be the third province in Canada to offer this innovative cancer therapy.

The Alberta Cancer Foundation has committed $4.9 million to this specific clinical trial program run by Dr. Michael Chu, a clinician and researcher at the University of Alberta’s oncology department.

After being let go from his job due to COVID-19, David Cormack from Calgary decided to embark on a cross country ride across Canada in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. He drove from Duchess, Alberta to Kingston, Ontario, covering 3,600 kilometres and to date has raised over $6000, making him the 8th highest individual fundraiser in the 2020 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

The 2020 Cash and Cars Lottery sold out completely on October 2nd, raising almost $2.7 million.

A huge thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket. Funds from the lottery directly support cancer research, treatment and care at the 17 Alberta Health Services cancer centres including the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary and the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. The full list of winners is posted at cashandcarslottery.ca and the Win Daily draws will begin on November 1st with $345,000 in cash still to win.

? Meet the Grand Prize Winners

Since 1998, the drug known as Herceptin has been successful in preventing the recurrence and spread of breast cancer. But the medication was found to cause a strain on patients’ heart health — especially if they were predisposed to cardiovascular issues.

Thanks to Alberta Cancer Foundation donors, doctors and researchers at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton were able to conduct a clinical trial to determine a breast cancer treatment that was safe for women with cardiovascular risks.

Now, when breast cancer patients with cardiovascular risks are prescribed Herceptin, they are also treated with the beta-blockers recommended by this clinical trial.

Cancer patient Randy Thompson believes that the act of living well with cancer is possible. And this cannot be reduced by the word, ‘cure.’ ?

?“To me that is often the message that gets lost. People feel like they are giving and giving and there’s no cure so why bother? There are so many new treatments that are extending life, lessening side-effects, and improving quality of life. There are so many reasons for cancer research outside of a cure that needs to be funded. We are making a difference and we need to continue to do that.” ??

When breast cancer recurs, it can metastasize (spread) into different organs such as the bone. Currently, there is no blood test that can detect bone metastasis. This means the diagnosis can be difficult and might only happen as a result of a broken bone, or bone pain.

A research team out of Calgary has identified a blood test that can detect bone metastases in breast cancer patients. The goal of this vital research is to identify whether women who have faced breast cancer are at risk of developing bone metastasis and even detect patients who have already developed early bone metastasis before symptoms appear. This early detection initiative could mean that Albertans will be treated earlier with targeted treatment plans, resulting in better outcomes.

“This blood test may provide a chance to test all breast cancer patients for their risk of bone metastasis and change their course of treatment for a positive outcome."

First launched in 2003, the University of Alberta Engineering Head Shave was created after Ron Wicentowich, the father of engineering students Graeme and Gary Wicentowich, was diagnosed with (and eventually passed away from) cancer. That inaugural event raised more than $12,500 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation as “Razored for Ron” before switching to its current name the next year.

The Engineering Students'' Society of the University of Alberta has continued to host the event every year since 2003, and it has raised more than $413,000 for cancer research We are so grateful to the Wicentowich family for starting this initiative and the Engineering Students’ Society students who have continued it for over 16 years!

This couldn’t be a better time to participate in some of our virtual fundraisers, such as Resolution Revolution! Simply set a resolution that you can accomplish at home or remotely and set up an online fundraising page!

Silas Rutley, a long-term resident of Banff was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2015. As the primary provider in his household, the initial shock of his cancer diagnosis was fortified with concern for his family’s wellbeing. Without being able to work how would he manage to pay for childcare, rent, or even keep food on the table? He felt exceptionally overwhelmed.

Through speaking with his social worker he was able to find some financial relief thanks to the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Patient Financial Assistance Program (PFAP).

Patients and families who qualify for PFAP are able to receive support during their treatment so they can focus on what matters most – healing.

“As soon as you take all that financial stress away from someone they can just focus on healing. It’s about saying, ‘I’m having a good day today’, ‘I’m going to go for a nice sunny walk,’ or whatever makes me feel good inside instead of worrying about having to work.”

The Alberta Cancer Foundation recently launched Femme Fondo, a ladies-only networking group that aims to connect and support women interested in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer through social and exercise/training events held every month.

In February we held a private spin class at one of Calgary’s top boutique spin studios, YYC Cycle Spin Studio. Following our class, Femme Fondo members had the opportunity to enjoy a few refreshments, learn more about The Ride and connect with other community-minded women.

To do our part in helping keep the community safe, we will be postponing our March networking event. But stay tuned to our social media channels for more updates!

The Bellerose Bike-A-Thon is a beloved annual event in St. Albert where students from Bellerose Composite High School ride for 48 hours on stationary bikes taking one-hour shifts among team members. This year over 800 students participated, raising over $140,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation in support of clinical trials at the Cross Cancer Institute.
