Meet Marty and stay safe this Halloween
Our new alien friend Marty is on a mission to create foods which do not have things like eggs and peanuts in the ingredients, especially for children with food allergies to enjoy. He studies foods, ingredients and flavours and now he has brought his knowledge to our world with his first invention � a range of tasty low fat crisps free from gluten, peanuts, eggs and soya.

Our new hay fever and immunotherapy leaflet
Hay fever can have a serious impact on quality of life. Most commonly, hay fever is triggered by pollen during the summer months, however, you can experience symptoms all year round (perennial rhinitis) caused by indoor allergens such as house dust mite, mould or animal dander.

Congratulations to Maddy and Catherine, who ran 10 miles in the Great South Run for #TeamAllergyUK in Portsmouth on 20^th October. Maddy and Catherine have raised �844.81 so far for Allergy UK. A massive thank you to Maddy and Catherine for running to help more people with allergies.

Ultra-Challenges
Why not challenge yourself to do an Ultra-Challenge for #TeamAllergyUK. You can walk, jog or run 25km, 50km or 100km, with breathtaking scenery, attractions and unexpected highlights along the way.

We have 13 Ultra-Challenges to choose from, in a variety of locations across the UK. These will be taking place from January-September 2020 and include:

The London Winter Walk, 19^th January 2020, see London�s historic sites and iconic attractions
The Jurassic Coast Challenge, 16^th � 17^th May 2020, which takes place along a spectacular costal route
The Peak District Challenge, 4^th � 5^th July, taking place in this popular national park with stunning views

All Ultra-Challenges allow you to take part with friends and family at your own pace, with rest stops providing free food and drink, as well as event support including medics, marshals and massages. Champagne, a medal and a t-shirt will be awarded upon completing the challenge.

Congratulations to Darren who took part in the White Collar Fighter (WCF) for Allergy UK on 16^th November in Manchester and was undefeated in his fight!

�I chose to take part in WCF because I like a challenge and I enjoy trying new things and even better that I can do this for charity like Allergy UK, as this charity is close to my heart with me losing my Nana 3 years ago due to an allergic reaction to penicillin. I have been pushed to my limits both mentally and physically to the point where I could have easily given up, but the professional coaches at WCF gave us the motivation and skills that are needed to push through the 8 weeks of intensive training and the one thing they always made us think about was the reason �WHY" we are doing this.�

Darren has raised �186.25 for Allergy UK and we would like to thank him for all his training, WCF fight and fundraising which will support people with allergies.

Dear Allergy UK

Thank you for being there for me. I have lived with allergy for a long time and thought I knew everything there was to know and despite the issues I have faced, I have always depended on you to help me understand. Doctors have given me so many mixed messages which is why I have always come back to you for help.

The COVID outbreak has put a new level of fear and anxiety on me. No one seemed able to tell me how I should look after myself in this situation. I wasn't sleeping and my levels of anxiety were creeping up fast. I am allergic so many things so I came back to you and you gave me answers and reassurance.

Make a donation this Christmas to help us be there for everyone who lives with allergies around the UK

Dear Supporter,

At this time of year our thoughts turn to Christmas, usually with a sense of anticipation and excitement. But we know this Christmas will be very different, with anticipation and excitement in short supply! Santa Claus will still deliver presents to children and Christmas dinners will still be enjoyed, but for many, this time of year will also be a time of sadness, of reflection and a wish that 2020 had been a better, brighter year.

We think of the families who are missing a familiar face around the dinner table this year and, for our family, that sense of loss is all too real. Last year, we lost our handsome, kind, loving son, Ruben, not to coronavirus, but to a food allergy.

Ruben's allergy was life threatening and frightening, but he got on with his life and managed it well. He didn't let it hold him back and lived life to the full! Ruben's warm and outgoing personality left an impression on everyone who met him. In the end, he died because of the cross contamination of milk products in his favourite popcorn. The terrible impact of that will live with us forever and I believe it's time that the UK took allergies seriously. Your gift of ?25 will help us make that happen.

Allergy symptoms can be incredibly frightening and lead to anxiety and hypervigilance, where we are constantly on the lookout for threat and danger or for signs of those bodily sensations. This can in turn act as a potential anxiety and stress trigger. The impacts of Covid-19 have been particularly stressful for many. Emma Amoscato returns following her best seller Living with Allergies, with a non-fiction book dedicated to educating and empowering children, their friends and caregivers on food allergy: You, Me and Food Allergies. It's peak season for hay fever, yet the weather and lockdown restrictions are urging us to spend more time outdoors. I lost so much precious time with my baby.

Allergies stole precious time and memories from Nathaniel's mum as she battled through the daily fears of caring for a severely allergic baby. Here, she tells us more about Nathaniel's journey and why they chose to support Allergy UK.

Effie, aged 9, doesn't let her allergies get her down.

Despite some early memories of feeling excluded, left out and made fun of, brave Effie has decided that she will not be defeated by her allergies and instead chooses to embrace them. Her advice is to focus on the positives, and the things you can do, rather than the things you can't. Our Covid-19 Appeal to Shoppers

We''re appealing to food shoppers to consider the needs of people living with allergy during coronavirus pandemic.

"Allergy UK, the leading patient charity for millions of people living with allergic conditions, is appealing to shoppers to think about those that need 'Free From' foods to feed their families. The charity is receiving reports that shoppers are leaving 'Free From' fixtures empty as they buy up alternatives such as oat milk and gluten free bread when standard products are temporarily sold out, leaving people who need these products empty handed..."

Allergy and Coronavirus FAQs

We''re working with allergy specialists on our Health Advisory Board and our own Clinical team to answer some of the questions we''ve received on our Helpline.

We will be updating these regularly in line with government advice to provide the latest health advice around coronavirus for those living with allergic disease.

Does having an allergy class as an "underlying condition"?

Our experts say that at the time of writing most allergic conditions (for example food allergy) are not included as an "underlying health condition" that is a risk with coronavirus.
However this is dependent on the type of allergic condition you have, and the following may fall into the risk category:

Uncontrolled asthma - it is important to ensure that your asthma is well-controlled (see advice from Asthma UK)
Immunosuppressed e.g. taking steroids or other immunosuppressive tablets for severe asthma or urticaria.
In some rare conditions, for example severe atopic eczema, is associated with an underlying immunodeficiency (e.g. severe combined immunodeficiency and hyper-IgE syndrome).

The status of allergy as an "underlying condition" is something on which Allergy UK is asking for further clarity from government agencies and will be reporting back on this as soon as possible.

I have severe asthma, what should I do if I think I have caught the virus?

If you think you've caught the virus and are not symptomatic, or you have very mild symptoms then you should follow the current government and NHS advice. However, if you have severe asthma it may make your asthma symptoms worse. If you experience shortness of breath or any other similar symptoms you should seek immediate help (and again, follow government advice on how to do this). As of now, you should be taking advice on managing your asthma (for example contact your asthma nurse or respiratory physician for the latest advice.

I understand that allergy is a disease of the auto immune system. Does that mean that having an allergy makes you more vulnerable?

Allergy is not an autoimmune disease. Allergy is a result of an exaggerated immune response to an allergen, e.g. a particular food or pollen. Our immune system is our defense mechanism and it is there to respond to things like viruses and bacteria to defend ourselves. Do not confuse allergy, and the exaggerated immune response to an allergen, with the body being unable to mount an immune response to a virus or bacteria.

Allergy symptoms can be incredibly frightening and lead to anxiety and hypervigilance, where we are constantly on the lookout for threat and danger or for signs of those bodily sensations. This can in turn act as a potential anxiety and stress trigger. The impacts of Covid-19 have been particularly stressful for many. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has commissioned a new Survey to calculate the financial cost of living with a food allergy, food intolerance or coeliac disease.

The Survey seeks to understand the costs of living with a food allergy, including food costs, non-food costs, such as for supplements and medication. It''s an opportunity for you to have your say about the real impacts of living with a food allergy and should only take 20 - 30 minutes of your time to complete.

Please consider your potential impact and click on the link to learn more. Currently Enrolling - Atopic Dermatitis Clinical Trial - now enrolling for a phase 3 clinical trial of an investigational medication for atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. Study participants must be at least 12 years of age or older.

This study will compare injections of nemolizumab (CD14152) to placebo (placebo looks like the study medication but contains no active drug). All study-related care and study medication will be provided at no charge. Reimbursement for time and participation may be available, if applicable. Visit the below link for more information.

Sunday 26 April was the scheduled date for the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon, the 40th edition of the world's greatest marathon. This event raises millions of pounds for charities but this year, because of coronavirus, there will be no runners tackling the 26 mile course to raise money for their charities. And this goes for many other challenges and fundraising events that our Allergy UK supporters were planning to take part in this year.

This is having a devastating effect on our charity''s income at a time when we need it most to help provide the help and support our community needs in this time of coronavirus. Every day through our Helpline and web chat people living with allergic conditions are asking us for help and support and we need to be there for them.

So we are asking you to help us by signing up to The 2.6 Challenge, a brilliant idea developed Save the UK''s Charities. It''s simple - all you need to do is think of an activity based around the numbers 26 or 2.6 that suits your skills and complete it on or from Sunday 26 April. You could:

pledge to run 2.6 miles as your daily exercise
do 26 minutes of yoga
juggle for 26 minutes (or maybe just 2.6 minutes!) non-stop

Check out the get involved'' page for ideas and inspiration or think up some of your own ideas - we would love to hear them. This is a challenge open to all ages and abilities. And don't worry if you're not able to get out your house or flat for now - you can do your Allergy UK 2.6 challenge anywhere inside too!

Thank you for being there for me. I have lived with allergy for a long time and thought I knew everything there was to know and despite the issues I have faced, I have always depended on you to help me understand. Doctors have given me so many mixed messages which is why I have always come back to you for help.

The COVID outbreak has put a new level of fear and anxiety on me. No one seemed able to tell me how I should look after myself in this situation. I wasn't sleeping and my levels of anxiety were creeping up fast. I am allergic so many things so I came back to you and you gave me answers and reassurance.

I lost so much precious time with my baby.

Allergies stole precious time and memories from Nathaniel's mum as she battled through the daily fears of caring for a severely allergic baby. Here, she tells us more about Nathaniel's journey and why they chose to support Allergy UK.

Effie, aged 9, doesn't let her allergies get her down.

Despite some early memories of feeling excluded, left out and made fun of, brave Effie has decided that she will not be defeated by her allergies and instead chooses to embrace them. Her advice is to focus on the positives, and the things you can do, rather than the things you can't. It is Allergy Awareness Week and we are putting a focus on coronavirus (COVID 19) for people living with allergic conditions such as asthma and hay fever.

Our Helpline has been receiving many calls from people with conditions such as asthma and hay fever who are anxious about managing and understanding the symptoms of these conditions, some of which can be similar to those of coronavirus.

There are also concerns about access to and the use of the medications that people need to manage their symptoms which are exacerbated by high pollen counts at the start of the main hay fever season in the UK.

Keep an eye out for our new ''Weaning your food allergic baby'' pack launching this National Weaning Week (4th -10th May 2020)

This new pack has been developed from the feedback you gave through our weaning survey last year and includes guidelines on weaning your allergic baby, recipe cards, a food dairy and much more.

Will you take the 2.6 Challenge?

By joining this nationwide virtual challenge and raising money for Allergy UK, you can help us keep working to support people with allergy during the coronavirus crisis.

Why 2.6? Because 26 April is the day of the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon which raises million pounds for charities. With no Marathon this year the 2.6 Challenge is a brilliant idea developed by 'Save the UK''s Charities'. It''s really simple - all you need to do is think of an activity based around the numbers 26 or 2.6 that suits your skills and complete it on or from Sunday 26 April. You could pledge to run 2.6 miles as your daily exercise, do 26 minutes of yoga, juggle for 26 minutes (or maybe just 2.6 minutes!) non-stop.
