AMINZ Mediation Skills Intensive - Online

Places are still available for the upcoming online edition of the AMINZ Mediation Skills Intensive course. Whether you are an aspiring mediator, a mediator looking to refresh your skills or looking to generally develop your knowledge of dispute resolution, this course is the ideal way to gain valuable skills and knowledge from the comfort of your own home.

Presented by AMINZ Fellows Bruce Cottrill and Nicola Hartfield, the Mediation Skills Intensive course focuses on the stages of the mediation process, identifying and working with an array of negotiation styles, and methods of facilitating problem solving. It also provides great opportunities to practice these new skills through practical exercises and role-plays.

Advanced Arbitration Seminar- Refreshing your knowledge of arbitration

The Advanced Arbitration Seminar is designed to build your understanding of arbitration, and is a great way to keep up to date with recent cases and developments. Attendance is a pre-requisite for those looking to undertake assessment for Fellowship of the Institute, but the seminar is a great opportunity for all practitioners and others who wish to up-skill in this area.

Presented by AMINZ President, Royden Hindle, and AMINZ Council Member, Nicole Smith, the seminar will be held fully online, allowing participants from all areas to attend the seminar from the comfort of their own home or office.

What does online mediation look like?

On Monday we held the first webinar in the series "Doing Business Differently", where Sue Wells was joined by Michael Heron QC from CODR, and Laura Keily and Nick Northcott from Immediation to discuss online dispute resolution. On this webinar, Laura and Nick gave us a demonstration of the web based platform, Immediation, offered in NZ in partnership with CODR. CODR offers online mediation and arbitration in New Zealand and is partnering with Immediation to offer the latest technology. What does online mediation look like?

Online mediation and arbitration is already practiced around the world. There are a number of online platforms that have different functionalities.

As part of our “Doing Business Differently” series, AMINZ invites you to a free live webinar where we will have a guided tour of the web based platform, Immediation, offered in NZ in partnership with CODR. Arbitration via audio-visual link: challenges and tips for success

As COVID-19 continues to impact the courts’ ability to conduct in-person hearings, resolving disputes through remote arbitrations using audio-visual technology is a potential solution. However, conducting hearings, particularly with witnesses, via audio-visual link presents unique challenges. For example, how does a decision-maker make findings of credibility and veracity when the witness is at the end of a computer screen; how do advocates adapt their techniques to present submissions and conduct cross-examination remotely; and how can a legal team work together effectively from separate locations?

At this AMINZ – AUT Young Arbitration Group webinar, the Hon Robert Fisher QC (Bankside Chambers), Lauren Lindsay (Bankside Chambers) and Ravi Jackson (3 Verulam Buildings, London) will discuss these challenges and practical tips for arbitrating (or participating in court hearings) via audio-visual link.

AMINZ Fellows the Hon Robert Fisher QC and Lauren Lindsay will be joined by English barrister Ravi Jackson, who juniored in the recent English High Court remote trial of a 7-day $500m Financial List claim, thought to be the first fully-remote Financial List trial.

The AMINZ-AUT Young Arbitration Group was established to support the next generation of practitioners. AMINZ created the group to be a forum for young arbitration practitioners to meet one another, meet senior practitioners, and to increase their skills and knowledge . AMINZ Network Meeting

All are welcome to join us for this month''s Auckland network meeting. Due to recent developments relating to Covid 19, the decision has been made to change the format and venue of the Auckland breakfast meeting which had been scheduled for March 26 at the Northern Club.

Rather than gather in person at the Northern Club, we will now gather online via Zoom, where Dr Robert Joseph still will present on “resolving disputes in Maori governance bodies”. As this is now an online meeting, anyone is welcome to join, regardless of whether you are based in Auckland.

Robert completed his Bachelor and Master of Laws degrees at Waikato, was admitted to the Bar in 1998 and completed a PhD in Law in 2006. He was a senior research fellow for the Te Mātāhauariki Research Institute at the University of Waikato under the leadership of Judge Michael Brown and Dr Alex Frame. He is currently the Director of Te Mata Hautū Taketake, the Māori and Indigenous Governance Centre at the University of Waikato: click HERE for more information about their important work. Robert also lectures at the University, supervises PhD students, and acts as an arbitrator. He is affiliated to Tainui, Tūwharetoa, Kahungunu, Rangitāne and Ngāi Tahu.

We are fortunate to have Robert with us for what is sure to be a stimulating and interesting session.
