The weather has turned but we are keeping bright and cheery at New Scientist Live. If you've bought a ticket be sure to say hello to the Ri team. We will be on hand to answer your questions and have plenty of great demos for you to try.

We are halfway through the month and if you're running out of things to do, why not come along to one of our events below?

How can we move towards a technological utopia? This is the question that Lord Browne, past President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, will answer on 21 October.

He'll also touch on questions such as: Are robots going to take our jobs? Are decisions about us by computer programmes biased? Has our demand for energy driven the Earth’s climate to catastrophe? Don't miss this 'public intellectual and national guidance counsellor' on the hottest topics of the day.

How are you feeling? What does 'in good health' even mean these days? On 23 October we will explore how to optimise our health and wellbeing and reshape our environments to support longevity in 'The Future of Health'.

We say "scientist", you say? If you said Einstein, perfect because, on 29 October, Andrew Robinson will tell the story of how Albert Einstein abandoned his Berlin home and went "on the run". 

And don't forget that our Great Science Auction is open until 31 October. You can bid on prizes that give you access to some of the most exclusive people, places and activities the science world has to offer. However, you'll need to get in there fast.

This is your fortnightly update of all the wonderful and weird things we have going on at the Ri.

This season of events is very nearly wrapped up and whilst you're reading this, the worker bees of the Ri are busy putting together our spring programme. We may be biased but it looks great and we're almost certain you're going to love it.

We will be releasing the new events to you all in a month or so but if you can't wait that long then now is the time to buy that Ri membership you've been musing on.

If that's got you excited, why not come to one of our November events as a taster of what is to come? From pushing the human body to its limits to the frittering away of Earth's most precious elements, there's something for everyone.

Fancy some history? Picture this: It's autumn 1933. Albert Einstein is living alone in an isolated holiday hut in rural England. But why did he seek refuge in England and just what were the Nazis planning for him back in Berlin? Learn more about the man behind the equations on 29 October in 'Einstein on the run'. 

We're sure you've seen headlines about obesity everywhere; on the television, on the tube. But have you ever wondered why some people eat more than others? It turns out differences in our genetic make-up mean some of us are slightly more hungry than others. A longstanding friend of the Ri, Giles Yeo, will explore whether obesity is a choice on 1 November.

And lastly, if you're suffering from eco-anxiety, come and hear from a panel of experts on the Royal Society of Chemistry's sustainability campaign. Discover how we can address throwaway culture and what we can all do to influence governments, retailers and consumers to safeguard precious elements for the generations to come. 'Saving precious elements' is sure to leave you feeling optimistic and inspired.

The end is nigh. There are just two days left to go of our Great Science Auction and it's your last chance to bid on some extraordinary science prizes.

We have fantastic workshops for the family, including a spectacular fireworks and waterworks class with chemist and Ri favourite Andrew Szydlo.

There are also wonderful culinary prizes up for grabs, from a 1920s fine-dining experience on board the Belmond British Pullman steam train, a tantalising tasting menu at Heston Blumenthal's Dinner or enjoy an unrivalled selection of wine and food at  Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant.

All prize winners will be helping to support the our charitable work in creating opportunities for everyone to discover, discuss and critically examine science.

The Auction must end this Thursday 31 October.

Our autumn season is also reaching its end so help us give it the send-off it deserves and come along to one of the November events below. From the Genetics Society's JBS Haldane Lecture 'Is obesity a choice?' to a sociopolitical debate led by Lord David Willetts on whether or not the 'Boomer' generation have pinched their children's future, there is sure to be at least one thing that appeals to you.

So click some buttons, take a browse and see where you end up. Hopefully, it will be in our theatre on a chilly autumnal evening.

Winter; it's a time to reflect on the past year and to look forward to the next. But what do you want to achieve in the next decade? If it's to learn more about how this wonderful and weird world we live in works, we've got you covered.

Our Programmes teams have been very busy these past few months curating a season of themes that reflect and respond to current topics and some of the most pressing issues of our time.

And so, drum roll please, introducing our Spring 2020 themes:

First up we have 'Saving our planet'. The news has been pretty fatalistic regarding climate change but it's not all doom and gloom. Separating the dramatic headlines from the facts is Vicki Hope. She will deliver a talk on predictions for our future planetary health in the March Discourse ' How can climate models help us respond to climate change?'. We will also be exploring the changes we can all make to move towards a sustainable way of living in 'Sustainable fashion' on 25 February.

Then, extending the topics covered in this year's CHRISTMAS LECTURES, we have the theme 'Who's in control?'. With technology advancing at a colossal rate are we in danger of running before we can walk? Explore the impacts of our thirst for technological advancement with Leah Plunkett as she outlines the mistakes adults make with kids' private information, the risks that result, and the legal system that enables ‘sharenting’ in 'Sharenthood'. Or, discover how to make the internet work for you with Google's  Daniel Russell in 'The joy of search'.

Our final theme is 'The Future of Health' and is in partnership with Medtronic and Roche. Details of the events in this theme will be online shortly so keep your eyes peeled for the latest additions to the programme.
