The demand is high
Yes, we're fully aware that today is also the counterculture cannabis holiday 4/20. It's hard to miss that fact when you live in Oregon where marijuana is legal - especially when you live in a town with dispensaries that borders a non-legal state - unless you are in complete denial of the truth.
In a perfect twist of irony, the day often celebrated with huge gatherings such as High Times Cannabis Cup and other 4/20 festivals - has taken on a different shape this year due to the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Some people - even famous musicians - have opted for virtual smoke-outs instead.
By the looks of the lines at the dispensaries in Ontario on Sunday, it seems like people took time to stock up in advance for their celebrations, as those lines have diminished today.
How we got here
After Oregon voters legalized cannabis for recreational use in 2015, Malheur County and several of its cities took the state up on its opt-out option for those places where the majority of voters had turned it down.
Three years later, in Ontario, voters overturned the city's
ban. But even before that happened, proprietors were so sure it would pass that they lined up outside the Community Development Center more than a week before the General Election in November of 2018 to wait in line to apply for business permits.
City officials ultimately projected nearly $1 million in local and state tax revenues for the 2019-20 budget. But, dispensaries did not open as early as planned, and the city did not get as much as expected in its distribution of state funds, and early this year city officials
projected a shortfall in total revenues.
Dispensary owners in Ontario had hoped to open their doors by a year ago today. But 4/20 came and went, along with another burgeoning weed holiday: 7/10.
The first dispensary, Weedology, finally threw open its doors on July 26. Burnt River Farms followed with a soft opening on Aug. 8, and Hotbox Farms followed that with a grand opening on Oct. 5, offering a free community
concert headlined by one of the biggest personality's tied to cannabis. That was major rap artist Snoop Dogg for anyone who missed the concert that drew thousands of people to Ontario with less than 24 hours notice.
COVID-19 and cannabis
While retailers across the state having had to close their doors since mid-March due to COVID-19, recreational and medical marijuana dispensaries have been an exception, never having being listed as
non-essential in any of Gov. Kate Brown's many executive orders surrounding the pandemic.
And, yes, we're fully aware that those dispensaries are being shopped by people from Idaho - a quick glance at any of the shops' parking lots will reveal that detail.
Many citizens have expressed concern to the Ontario City Council over the dispensaries being shopped by people from Idaho coming from counties where positive cases of the virus are numerous. Even one of the city councilors has expressed his concern over that, as well as over having to unmask to have ID's checked.
Meanwhile, due to numerous questions from proprietors and the public, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, which manages the state's recreational marijuana program, has put up a webpage dedicated to frequently asked questions regarding COVID-19. The OLCC doesn't specifically state that people have to unmask to be ID'd, but does say people can wear masks to the dispensaries and that ID's still have to be
checked.
The state has carved out many other exceptions to ensure minimal loss of tax revenues from dispensaries, having also enabled ways to overcome social distancing rules inside
establishments by allowing curbside delivery at stores. This option was also approved for those shops within Ontario.
So, if you''re celebrating 4/20 today, please smoke responsibly. And remember, wash your hands.

There was a parade today When the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic stopped local bridge players from their twice-weekly games, it didn''t stop their from showing each other they still care. That''s why a drive-by birthday parade happened for Joyce Whittet, who turned 90 today. Joyce stood in her yard, as her friends drove by, some taking the time to get out in their full COVID-19 regalia (think face masks and gloves) and plant signs in her yard.
Whittet is a longtime Ontario resident, who taught science at Aiken Elementary, won outstanding science teacher of the year for Oregon, and has traveled and trekked on her bicycle all over the world.
Happy Birthday, Joyce! A tisket a tasket With school being closed and a greenhouse on campus full of baskets planted for an annual Mother''s Day fundraiser, a local FFA advisor took over the task of keeping the plants alive and well for this year''s sale. The Fruitland High School FFA Chapter sale starts at 7 a.m. Saturday. Students will be notably absent due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Don''t worry, be happy, now Our reporter, Corey Evan, captured this great message outside of the Ontario Starbucks today. The store reopened its drive-thru this week.

Heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend who . If I had a nickel for every time I have heard, read or uttered the word ''unprecedented'' since March, I surely would have more than my expected stimulus payment. But it''s true: There are many firsts happening around the globe right now due to the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
With this has come a flood of fact and fiction that citizens have had to swim through to find the nuggets of truth.
One common suggestion among local, state and federal authorities at this time: find an accurate news source. In fact, due to the number of rumors circulating about the pandemic, FEMA just launched a rumor control page.
We are happy to continue our mission of providing the Western Treasure Valley with accurate news, especially through the pandemic.
I need a remedy! Chicken Soup for the Soul does not equate to bleach for the virus! Due to widely circulated misinformation on social media platforms, people have suggested or taken outrageous steps to try to get rid of COVID-19 (NOTEWORTHY: there is no remedy!) So please, take the Oregon Poison Control''s word for it and don''t ingest anything to "get rid" of the virus.
Permanent staycation? It''s spring and we''ve STILL got cabin fever - let''s keep our wits about us.
Both Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Idaho Gov. Brad Little this week both suggested we stay at home a little longer.
If what they have said about the need for social distancing hasn''t convinced you, this 3-D simulation by the New York Times did it for me!
