Dear Patron,

We cherish our weekly communications with you, and always look forward to sharing information about our workshops, digital content, and more. However, there's a much more pressing issue weighing on our minds and hearts this week. We are horrified by the senseless deaths in the Black community due to police brutality and action, both in the United States and Canada. Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, George Floyd, and Regis Korchinski-Paquet represent only a small number of the lives lost, and we are heartbroken to see this pattern of racism and injustice continue both in our own country and abroad.

We're dedicating this week''s newsletter to resources and links about the Black Lives Matter movement. As a company, we''ve been reflecting on our own past practices and actions, reaching out to members of Vancouver's Black artistic community and researching and educating ourselves with many of the resources below.? We''ll soon be sharing a list of considered and specific actions we will be taking to actively amplify and uplift BIPOC communities. Whether these articles and videos are just the beginning or a continuation of your research on these topics, we hope they will help us come together to fight against racism and intolerance. This is by no means a comprehensive list, and we encourage you to do further research and self-education. But we hope these resources provide you with information so we all can continue to learn and listen to and amplify the voices of the Black community.

We stand in solidarity with the activists fighting for change worldwide, and wholeheartedly support the Black Lives Matter movement. We look forward to continuing this conversation within our own organization-and we encourage you to join us.

As this period of social distancing continues, we''re constantly looking for creative new ways to connect with you. This week, we''re excited to share two workshops tailor-made for teens, including Queer Kids Comedy and Youth Drama.

We''re also eager to announce that we''ll be hosting a digital reading of our 2018 Silver Commission Redbone Coonhound on August 14. The reading will take place on the final day of our upcoming digital festival, Dialed Up: An Arts Club Community Celebration. More details to come!

We believe theatre is an art form that generates a great deal of empathy, which is something that''s so needed during this time. Though our art must currently be experienced on screen rather than onstage, we hope that it continues to move, inspire, and encourage you to connect with others.??

As a company, we've always cherished our origin story: the Arts Club went from a small gathering spot on Seymour and Davie in downtown Vancouver to become the largest urban not-for-profit theatre company in Canada! Though we've grown, we're still dedicated to the advancement of local artists by sharing stories not only from across the globe, but also from Vancouver- and B.C.-based voices. We believe that through the sharing of these stories, culture expands, understanding of our differences is nurtured, and art bursts forth. But above all, we believe that through theatrical storytelling, our knowledge of who we are as a community, as a region, and as a nation emerges.

And this is why, during these times of global crisis, art is more important than ever. While we wish more than anything that we could be together during this time, we don''t believe that physical separation should stop us from being connected by the power of theatre. To all patrons and friends of the Arts Club Theatre Company:

These are extraordinary and troubling times, and we need to take action to address not only the safety of our staff and artists, but of the community as well. Effective tomorrow, March 17, in an effort to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19, the Arts Club will close our three theatre venues and box offices, our production shops, and our offices at the BMO Theatre Centre until Monday, March 30. All productions, tours, events, and workshops are postponed until further notice.

Last week, we were heartsick over cancelling our tour of Kim's Convenience and our production of carried away on the crest of a wave. Today, following the banning of gatherings over 50 in BC, we are equally sad to announce that we have cancelled the remaining performances of The Wedding Party and postponed all upcoming productions.

UPDATED 2019-2020 SEASON INFORMATION

All performances of the Kim's Convenience tour are cancelled (Maple Ridge, Burnaby, Kelowna, Cranbrook, Revelstoke, Nanaimo, Duncan). We ask for the patience of patrons as they wait to be contacted by these venues
All remaining performances of The Wedding Party are cancelled
carried away on the crest of a wave (March 19-April 19) is postponed until August 2020 (dates TBA); current ticketholders will receive new tickets once dates have been determined
Every Brilliant Thing (April 2-26) is postponed (dates TBA); current ticketholders will receive new tickets once dates have been determined

OUR PROMISES

1.??Promise to Ticketholders: During this time, we are offering extra flexibility for our patrons. Exchange unused tickets for any upcoming performance, or donate your ticket back to our organization and receive a tax receipt. Additionally, ticketholders for postponed shows will receive updated tickets once new dates have been chosen. The dates for Kinky Boots and Peter Pan Goes Wrong have not been affected, and we will announce the new dates for our postponed productions shortly.

2.??Promise to Artists: We are dedicated to the artists in this community and we plan to stage the remainder of this season. Our artists are our friends, our colleagues, and our inspirations, and we promise to stand with them during this extraordinarily difficult time.????

3.??Promise to the Community: The Arts Club Theatre Company will return. With your support and understanding, your beloved theatre company will remain a steadfast community asset for generations to come.

Registration is now open for the winter cohort of Creative Teens Theatre! ?If you know a teen in grade 7-12 who''s excited about performance and storytelling, this program is for them.

Participants will learn how to create an original performance-from coming up with storylines to developing acting skills to designing movement, space and sound. Students will be working as an ensemble with like-minded teens to tell the stories that they''re passionate about! The program''s final showcase will feature their very own digital play.

Happy 90th Birthday to the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage! On December 15, 1930, the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage opened its doors as a movie house with a screening of Lilian Gish''s first talkie, One Romantic Night. A movie house-turned-theatrical venue, this space has entertained generations of audiences, and has served as a beating heart of the South Granville community. Since the Arts Club''s acquisition of the venue in 1998, the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage has held over 125 productions, from blockbuster musicals to 20th century classics. We thank the many the tireless community advocates who have helped make this dream a possibility, and we look forward to a time when we can once again gather in our company''s trademark venue.

As the world continues to navigate this unprecedented crisis, we want to extend our sincerest thanks for the understanding and patience that you-our greater Arts Club family of valued donors, patrons, subscribers, and theatre-lovers?-have shown us, especially with regard to our programming.

In light of the B.C. government''s announcement on May 6-which stated that gatherings of over 50 people are not possible for the foreseeable future-we have made the heartbreaking decision to cancel the remaining productions in our current season, which would have run through the summer. For a full list of affected shows, please click here. We will be in touch with ticketholders on Friday, May 15, about ticket options.

We understand that this decision raises questions about our next season. Please know that we are trying to envision our "new normal" in the upcoming 2020-2021 season, the programming for which remains uncertain at this time. We are involved in many discussions with our staff, artists, and co-producers nationwide to reimagine how we can continue to engage with our audiences in a meaningful way. You can be assured that we don't take this situation lightly, and we're striving to make choices that ensure the safety of our patrons and theatre community.

We're eager to bring light, laughter, and enriching stories back to our stages as soon as it is safe to do so. Until then, we'll keep delivering great online content to your homes through our Digital Edition and using our space at the BMO Theatre Centre as a site for COVID-19 initiatives, such as sewing masks and scrub caps.

While we await the time until we can come together again, we humbly ask you to consider donating to our Chrysalis Campaign. Find out more about our professional development programs-like the Bill Millerd Artist Fund, the Silver Commissions Project, the Emerging Playwrights'' Unit, and the Company-in-Residence Program-and learn from the artists who have taken part in them. Open Mic Night

It wouldn''t be a festival without some exciting events!

Dialled Up will kick off with a virtual open mic night, hosted by Munish Sharma, on Saturday, August 8, from 7 PM-8 PM! We invite you to sign up for a five-minute slot during which you can share your art in any way you choose, whether that's singing a song, reading your work, or presenting a monologue.

There are just a few times remaining, as we can only accommodate approximately 12-15 artists. Slots will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis; we''ll contact you if you''ve scored a spot. If you don''t make it onto the main list, we''ll add you to our wait list-and we invite you to watch the show, in case a space opens up!

Redbone Coonhound Reading Livestream

To close out the Dialled Up community celebration, we''re hosting a live reading of Arts Club Silver Commission Redbone Coonhound, by Amy Lee Lavoie and Omari Newton, on Friday, August 14, at 7:30 PM. Livestream tickets are available via a pay-what-you-can donation, so you can enjoy this event from the comfort of home! All proceeds will go to our Denis Simpson Fund.

Redbone Coonhound weaves together several thematically-related micro-plays-connected loosely by the titular dog breed-as a way to explore the intricacies of both the subtle and overt polemics of race, systemic power, and privilege. The play confronts instances of daily systemic racism in the past, present, and future in surprising and humorous ways.

This is a difficult and unprecedented time for all of us. As you know, the ongoing response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has been quickly evolving. To comply with yesterday's directive by the B.C. Ministry of Health, the Arts Club is immediately cancelling the upcoming performances of carried away on the crest of a wave at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage and our touring production of Kim's Convenience.

It is imperative that we act on the advice of government officials, public health authorities, and medical professionals. Of course, the impact of lost performances on the Arts Club, a not-for-profit theatre company, is enormous. These cancellations affect all the artists and staff, both on- and off-stage, who bring our shows to life. However, the safety of our patrons, our staff, and our artists remains our top priority.

Here's what you need to know:

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

All performances of the Kim's Convenience tour are cancelled (Maple Ridge, Burnaby, Kelowna, Cranbrook, Revelstoke, Nanaimo, Duncan). We ask for the patience of patrons as they wait to be contacted by these venues.
The Wedding Party will continue until March 22 at the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre as scheduled, as this venue has a capacity of under 250 people. We continue to implement thorough sanitation measures and offer increased access to sanitation materials at our venues for your health and safety.

UPCOMING PRODUCTIONS

Every Brilliant Thing (April 2-26) is expected to run as scheduled
'da Kink in my Hair (April 16-May 16) is expected to run as scheduled
Kinky Boots (May 21-July 19) is expected to run as scheduled
Peter Pan Goes Wrong (June 25-August 23) is expected to run as scheduled

Kim's Convenience has brought laughter and tears to audiences throughout greater Vancouver, and we're heartbroken to see it go. Our hope is to bring it back in a future season.

Our team has worked hard to create sets and costumes for carried away, and our talented actors have been in rehearsal for three weeks already. We are passionate about this beautiful show and remain committed to sharing it with our audiences. As a result, we intend to bring it to you in summer 2020. TICKETING INFORMATION

If you have tickets to a cancelled performance, we humbly ask that you consider donating the value back to the Arts Club for a tax-deductible receipt. As a not-for-profit charitable organization, we rely heavily on donors, subscribers, and single-ticket buyers, as their support is crucial to our organization's existence. By donating the value of your ticket, you are providing vital support for the art and the artists that inspire and connect our community.

Introduction to Scenic Design

The practise of designing a theatrical set can take many forms. Set designers come from a wide variety of artistic backgrounds and employ many different design principles, techniques and software applications. This workshop is intended to give anyone interested a broad overview of some general design principles, theatrical scenic design concepts as well as an outline of the process that brings a set from concept to the stage.

We''re thrilled to share that from August 8-14, the Arts Club will host Dialled Up: An Arts Club Community Celebration! A blend of virtual and in-person events, this festival is intended to inspire a feeling of togetherness among theatre lovers, and to celebrate the many programs we facilitate with professional artists in our community.

Events will include a live Open Mic night on Saturday, August 8, personalized videos from our Silver Commissions playwrights and 2019 Bill Millerd Artist Fund recipients, panels with our Company-in-Residence partners and Emerging Playwrights'' Unit cohort, and a live reading of a Silver Commission-in-progress, Redbone Coonhound.
