It�s been another busy month! We�ve had a packed schedule of webinars, workshops and online peer surgeries and on top of all this, we are very excited to be announcing the launch of a new Beacon activity � expert insight sessions. These will be led by an expert and will give you the opportunity to ask questions and discuss particular topics with fellow Chairs and Vice Chairs. Our first two sessions focus on trustee recruitment and appraising your Chief Executive. Further session topics will be announced very soon!

Our NEW expert insight sessions will give you the opportunity to hear from an expert, ask questions and discuss with fellow Chairs and Vice Chairs.

An expert�s insight on trustee recruitment

Janet Thorne, CEO of Reach Volunteering will look at all stages of trustee recruitment: from reflecting on the kind of board your charity needs through planning, advertising, selecting, inducting to evaluating. By drawing on Reach�s research, she will also explore the tools, techniques and mindset for successful recruitment, and how to embed an inclusive approach so that you can diversify your board.

An expert�s insight on appraising your Chief Executive

The Charity Governance Code states that "In the case of the most senior member of staff (e.g. CEO) the board makes sure that there are proper arrangements for their appointment, supervision, support, appraisal, remuneration and, if necessary, dismissal.��

Beryl Hobson, CEO of PGS and ex-Head of the Large Charities Division at the Charity Commission, will discuss the role of the Chair in setting CEO objectives, monitoring and appraising the CEO and addressing performance issues.

This briefing explores the role of appraisal and addresses how to manage expectations, who to involve and how to approach both the easy and difficult conversations. Smaller charity Chair news

NCSC's Small Charity Guide on improving your cybersecurity

The Charity Commission recently issued an alert to the sector about cybercrime and how to report it. Cybercrime involves attacks on, or through, computer systems and networks. It often includes the theft of data and the disruption of systems to enable further crime. NCSC has produced a guide on how to improve cybersecurity within your charity � quickly, easily and at low cost. Suggestions include:

backing up your data
keeping your smartphones (and tablets) safe
using passwords to protect your data.

New Chairs' Briefing

Taking on a new chairing role comes with a steep learning curve. This session will help you to reflect on how to become the most effective Chair you can. Emphasis will be on the strengths you bring, as well as the �gaps� you want to fill and the support that you might need.

This interactive workshop focuses on the role in practice: for example, it looks at preparing for and chairing board meetings, explores the relationship with the CEO/lead officer, and discusses how to build a collaborative and effective board.

Dynamic Duo

When the relationship between Chair and Chief Executive is strong � they are a �dynamic duo� � both adding value to the organisation. When the relationship is in trouble the organisation suffers. This workshop explores how to balance the roles and how to bring out the best in each other.

The workshop looks at the CEO/Chair relationship from both perspectives. It is an opportunity for you to hear from and share ideas with your peers. Topics that will be covered include: what the relationship looks like when it works well, practical realities and experiences from Chairs and CEOs, establishing and developing a supportive culture, and dealing with conflict.

As Chair, you have responsibility for supporting your Chief Executive to succeed, while holding them to account. A regular appraisal provides a useful opportunity to agree and review goals and discuss feedback.

Creating a good appraisal process:

agree on objectives
make sure it's part of an ongoing discussion throughout the year, not a one-off

Charity news for Chairs

Charity Commission issues guidance on serious incident reporting

The Charity Commission has issued updated guidance on serious incident reporting for charities, to include incidents which involve a partner organisation. This affects all charities who have delivery partners, funders, subsidiary trading companies or linked charities, e.g. federated organisations. The new guidance aims to provide more clarity for trustees on the type of incidents they should report and the reporting process.

How Chief Executives can help or hinder good governance

Writing for the Charity Governance Code, our CEO, Ros Oakley looks at how the role of the Chief Executive is sometimes overlooked in charity governance. Ros highlights how Chief Executives can support governance by helping the board understand their responsibilities and providing support as needed. And how they can hinder good governance by providing the board with incomplete information or undermining their decisions.

Charity Commission issues warning over fraud

The Charity Commission has issued a warning to charities over possible fraud. Several charities have reported falling victim to fraudsters after responding to fake emails, posing as staff members.

Mike Cashman, Chair of MK Money Lifeline, will lead this surgery and share his experience of leading MK Money Lifeline through a process of defining a new strategy. He will explain how the organisation decided to identify and choose between a number of very different strategic options.

Campaign for financial support for charities #EveryDayCounts

We have joined the sector-wide call for a financial package to ensure charities can continue to support those most in need. We are calling for support from the government that is substantial, simple and swift. In particular:

1. Additional funding should be allocated to bolster and mobilise organisations that are working on the front line and directly contributing to tackling the impact of the coronavirus.

2. The government should provide a 'Stabilisation Fund' to enable charities to stay afloat and continue operating during the course of the pandemic.

3. Make regulatory changes to some of the existing schemes announced by the government to allow charities to become eligible.

Nearly three weeks have passed since Rishi Sunak said that the government stood ready to provide support to charities, and despite both Jacob Rees Mogg and the Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying that a package of measures was being put together, nothing has yet been announced. We hope that will change, the need is urgent. In the meantime, please support the campaign by contacting your MP and by adding your voice on social media using the hashtag #EveryDayCounts.

Working with the Charity Commission

We are currently having a webinar meeting with the Charity Commission CEO Helen Stephenson and her colleagues once a week. We are collating the concerns you are raising with us and highlighting where additional guidance or clarification from the Charity Commission is helpful. Please keep letting us know about the issues you want help with as Chairs. If you are contacting the Charity Commission directly be sure to mark it COVID 19 or coronavirus to ensure the enquiry is fast-tracked.

For Association of Chairs members and participants in our Beacon Programme for smaller charities, we are also running a weekly coronavirus online peer surgery, and a number of themed sessions on topics such as supporting your CEO and financial management.

Please do point other Chairs and Vice Chairs in our direction so that we can help as many Chairs as possible.

New Chairs'' briefing

Launch of brand new Chairing essentials webinars

We're very excited to be launching a brand new programme of webinars for 2020. The Chairing essentials webinars will focus on key topics, aimed at supporting you in your chairing role.

What will your future Chief Executive be looking for?

As Chair, it's useful to be aware of what prospective Chief Executive candidates will be looking for. Ann suggests, amongst other things, that future CEOs should look at how the Chair wants to work with a CEO and how disagreements are managed.

New online peer activities successs

Over the last few months, we have rolled out two new online activities: online peer surgeries and expert insight sessions. Online peer surgeries are led by an experienced Chair who shares an experience of handling a situation that others might encounter. It''s then open to others to share what has worked, what hasn''t and to pass on learning. Online expert insight sessions are expert-led and enable Chairs to gain insights from an expert and from one another.

So far, we are thrilled by their success!

95% of those who have joined an online peer surgery would be very likely or likely to recommend the online surgery to another Chair or Vice Chair.
100% of those who joined our expert insight sessions agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that 'I feel more confident in my chairing role' as a result of attending the session.

At Association of Chairs we are keener than ever to inspire, challenge and support you in your role as Chair, or Vice Chair, of a smaller charity. As a valued Beacon Programme participant, we'd like to update you on the programme, and tell you about our future plans and how you can benefit from them.

Beacon is a two-year programme, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, designed to support the invaluable work undertaken by Chairs of small charities. Funding for the Beacon Programme will end on 30 September 2020, but we will build on this work and the feedback you've given us to support small charity Chairs through our Association of Chairs membership.

Tackling racial discrimination

Last month, ACEVO and Voice4Change published the Home Truths report which highlighted the extent of racial discrimination in the sector. We think Chairs have an important role to play in tackling this issue. We're encouraging Chairs to read the report and consider how their charities could help make a difference. Read our response to the report here.

We'll be running several events over the next few months, aimed at supporting Chairs to recruit diverse trustee boards and tackle discrimination in their charities.

Workplace health and safety during Covid-19

Many charities are starting to think about staff returning to workplaces. It''s important for Chairs and their boards to be aware of their responsibilities for staff returning to workplaces or working from home.

Blog: why focus on racial diversity

Malcolm John, who is one of our trustees and leads the Action for Trustee Racial Diversity, wrote a thought-provoking blog post for us earlier this year on the lack of trustee diversity. The blog post also signposts to further resources to help improve board diversity.

Getting on Board has published a new report Breaking into a club filled with old white men which looks at the barriers people of colour, young people and women face in becoming trustees.
