Austin-based nonprofit BakingForGood.org, in partnership with Austin Creative Alliance and BlackArtMattersATX.org, is holding a virtual bake sale July 6 - 11, to raise funds for the Black Art Matters ATX movement.

Forty-five volunteer bakers from all over Austin, are going old-school in a new way to raise awareness and funding for this important cause. 100% of the proceeds from this campaign will be used as commissioning grants to Black artists in Austin. The grants will be reviewed by an independent curatorial panel of Black arts professionals, and distributed by the Austin Creative Alliance.

All bakes will be delivered to the winners on Sunday in a socially-distant, contact-free way.

Peer Support Group for Creatives

This Peer Support Group for Creatives (SGC) is intended to provide a space where individuals working within creative fields can come together to share issues they may be struggling with and to connect with others who experience similar struggles.

This weekly one-hour virtual meeting will serve as a safe space in which issues such as Financial hardship, Parenting and single-parenting, Struggles with addiction or substance overuse, Mental health challenges, Identity exploration, representation and inclusion, and Fears related to work, practice and the circumstances of our times, along with any other relevant topics for creatives may come up.

Science has shown that peer-led support groups are one of the most powerful tools we have in practicing self-care, healing and nurturing community. Members of this group will remain anonymous to ensure the well-being of all involved.

IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE FOR INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS

As part of our response to the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, ACA has established The Artists Emergency Relief Fund to help artists in Greater Austin maintain their personal and financial stability in these uncertain times.

Artists may apply for up to $500 to replace verifiable lost income due to the cancellation of a specific, scheduled gig or opportunity (i.e. commissions, performances, contracts) due to Coronavirus/COVID-19 precautionary measures. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and are subject to approval and available funds. Priority will be given to ACA members, and to applicants facing food or housing insecurity. ACA is reviewing applications daily, so that funds can be in artists' hands as quickly as possible.

While repayment is not required, an artist who receives funding through the Artists Emergency Relief Fund will be asked to contribute to the ACA community by donating artistic work, creative services, or volunteer time.

Our funding pool is limited, so please be sure to contact your landlord, financial institutions, utilities, phone company and other service providers to find out what short term relief they may be offering.

Artists Emergency Relief Fund SILENT AUCTION

As the COVID pandemic stretches on, local Austin artists continue to need support from the larger community. Performing, visual, culinary and cinematic artists have been particularly hard hit, unable to work as much as they need to, if at all. As part of ACA''s continuing efforts to address food and housing insecurity experienced by the people who create Austin's vibrant culture, we''ve launched a SILENT AUCTION to benefit our ongoing Austin Emergency Relief Fund.

Several artists who have received support from the Emergency Fund have in turn donated to the Auction, paying it forward to artists still awaiting funding. Funds raised by the Auction will be distributed as follows:

25% to the contributing artist,
50% to Artists Emergency Relief Fund,
25% to Austin Creative Alliance for administrative expenses.

ATX + Egypt Fashion Entrepeneurship Program

The City of Austin Economic Development Department and the United States (U.S) Embassy in Cairo, Egypt have partnered on an international exchange program for fashion designers in Austin and Egypt. Made possible through a $231,000 Federal grant from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, selected applicants participate in a year-long business development and cultural exchange to grow within the fashion industry. Through a partnership with the Austin Community College Fashion Incubator, the program will offer a virtual education series on topics ranging from fashion management to entrepreneurship.

Voces Latinx Playwriting Competition
The Miranda Family Foundation

The Latinx/Hispanic Community represents many nations and every corner of the United States. By the mid-21st Century, 1 in 3 people will identify as having ra?ces Latinx (Latin roots) and have journeys and histories that need to be heard and experienced on stage. The goals of The Miranda Family Foundation Voces Latinx National Playwriting Competition are to discover, develop, promote and amplify Latinx plays and playwrights.

Repertorio Espa?ol is now in its 53rd season and 2nd decade of championing new works through playwriting initiatives. To that end, this competition will prepare the way for an American Theatre that is reflective and representative of the Pan Latinx Community.

The Texas State Legislature designates Texas State Artists during each Legislative Session. Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) manages the Texas State Artists nomination process. These positions, including state poet laureate, state musician, state two-dimensional artist and state three-dimensional artist, are one-year appointments. Appointees are selected for their years of excellence and dedicated commitment to the arts in Texas.

Texas State Artists represent the best of Texas' rich and diverse artistic community. These individuals inspire others through their unique creative expression. This designation is our state's highest recognition for excellence in the arts.

Imprortant Advocacy UPDATE

At its regular meeting on Thursday, September 17, Austin City Council passed the "SAVES" Resolution (Save Austin''s Vital Economic Sectors) which directs city management to urgently find funding to sustain live music & arts, restaurants & bars, and childcare businesses. These sectors are noted as key to culture and economic recovery. The inclusion of arts in this resolution is a direct result of the letter the Austin Arts Community sent to City Council in July.

Austin Creative Alliance will host a briefing on Zoom, at 4pm this Monday, September 28, to share the final adopted text of the resolution, discuss the meaning and impact of the amendments added by council, then describe next steps at the city, how to keep abreast of developments and advocate directly to council if necessary.

City management is directed to return to Council with a plan by Tuesday, September 29 and an ordinance or other resolution at the October 1 City Council. This briefing will be the last opportunity to get informed before Council takes additional actions.

The Peer Support Group for Creatives (PSGC) is being created by Greer Sikes in order to provide a space for the creative community to come together and safely share our struggles or concerns, so that we may connect with other peers who may be able to provide support or solutions for one another. Beyond peer support and connection, the objective of the PSGC is not to provide a space in which solutions are prescriptively given, but rather the space in which they can be envisioned by and shared amongst our community members. In order to create a group which best serves the wants and needs of our community at this time, though, we realize we need your feedback.

It is the intention for this group to be built for and by the community itself. In order to create this space and provide as much accessibility to the community as possible, we are asking you to help us better understand your and your direct communities' needs. This feedback will directly shape the evolving Peer Support Group for Creatives, so that it may become a space which holistically represents the struggles and concerns of the Austin Creative Community as well as champions solutions by and for creatives themselves, rather than reliance on systemic or institutional solutions which do not serve the whole community.
