Public consultation—Reconsideration of 2,4-D

In October we published the Proposed Regulatory Decisions and Review Technical Report for the reconsideration of 2,4-D for public consultation. Submissions from the public are invited, and the closing date for submissions is 31 January 2020.

APVMA MRL Standard maintenance

The APVMA has undertaken some maintenance on the APVMA MRL Standard to standardise formatting and the expression of commodity names in Tables 1 and 4. This has resulted in many small changes of no regulatory consequence. As a result, we have remade the Standard and it is now known as the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Code (MRL Standard) Instrument 2019. The Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Code Instrument No. 4 (MRL Standard) 2012 was repealed on 28 August 2019.

Public consultation: chemical review of neonicotinoids

On 19 November 2019 we commenced a chemical reconsideration of neonicotinoid insecticides for approved active constituents, product registrations, and all associated label approvals on the basis of risks to the environment. The closing date for submissions is 3 February 2020.

2019 wrap-up from our CEO

2019 has been a busy year for the APVMA. We settled into our new office space in Armidale ahead of schedule and continued to improve regulatory performance, increased productivity, updated policy and led the world in the approval of new products that support Australia’s agricultural productivity and are safe for the environment, people and animals.

Wishing you all the best for a safe and joyful festive season.

We will be closed during the Christmas and New Year period, from Wednesday 25 December 2019 reopening on Thursday 2 January 2020.

Focus on carryover of veterinary drugs in feed

Earlier this year, James Deller, our Director, Risk Assessment Capability, Residues and Trade, participated in a joint FAO WHO expert meeting on the issue of carryover in feed and transfer from feed to food of unavoidable and unintended residues of approved veterinary drugs.

The report from this meeting has now been published, and includes results of the expert discussions, conclusions and recommendations. The Australian policy surrounding MRL establishment to cover residues arising from carryover of veterinary drugs is outlined in a case study.
