Next week, editor and writing coach Helga Schier will explore the functions of dialogue and narration so you can find the mix that’s right for your novel.
More than Just Talk: Painting a Scene with Dialogue and Narration
Jan. 9, 2020 at 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM ET (6:30 PM – 7:30 PM GMT: UK)
People don’t always say what they mean or mean what they say. That’s true in real life and in fiction. Dialogue is not only about what is being said, but also about what is left unsaid. That is the playing field of narration: it shows us how people interact nonverbally, exposing the subtext that may not be apparent if you only hear the spoken words. So, how do you strike a perfect balance between the two? This webinar with editor Helga Schier will not try to give you a ready-made formula for the right mix of narration and dialogue. Instead, she will explore the functions of dialogue and narration in a scene, so that you can find the mix that’s right for your novel. This webinar will explore how the interplay of dialogue and narration:
• Creates the atmosphere of a scene • Exposes the context and circumstance of the dialogue • Reveals the personality and relationship of the dialogue partners • Builds the underlying tension, conflict, or motivation • Drives the plot forward
A writer’s job is to create a world that unfolds before the reader’s eyes. We want to hear people speak and see what they do and where they do it. With the well-tuned interplay of dialogue and narration, you can create scenes that sizzle with romance, suspense, excitement, or joy, engaging the reader in your characters’ plight.

Tips for Successfully Submitting Your Manuscript:
What Agents and Editors are Looking for and Why
September 17, 2020 at 1:30 PM to 2:45 PM ET (6:30 PM - 7:45 PM BST: UK)
?
?
?
Many novice writers think they don't need to worry about submitting their manuscripts to agents and publishers until they are done. This is not true. In fact, the earlier you know what distinguishes a publishable manuscript, the better.
This tutorial will briefly explain what goes on behind the scenes of a publishing house and discuss how an awareness of submissions procedures can help you write a better manuscript. Fundamentals of the submissions process such as genre or page count or theme or even punctuation are not arbitrary; they are among the elements steering an acquisition editor's decision - for good reasons we will explore.
We will touch upon developing a query letter and sample chapters, using them not only to pitch, but to make sure that your manuscript develops naturally, your plot
is paced well, your characters are likable, and - most importantly - your work is creative and unique.

How to Nail Your Book Launch with the Right Pricing and Distribution

You can write the best book in the world, but unless you take the right steps, the readers won't even know it exists.
A book is a work of art, but once you decide to give it away in exchange for money, it becomes a product. The price you charge and the distribution channels you use are two critical factors in the commercial success of your book, and they go hand in hand with other elements such as your book cover and the marketing campaign. It is crucial for a new author with a limited number of followers to come up with the right pricing and distribution, especially during the book launch. Join this webinar and learn what distribution and pricing strategy you can use to make Amazon list your book in the "Hot New Releases category" or become a bestseller in a category. Webinar speaker and book marketing and publishing expert A.G. Billig used one of these strategies to drive her book, I Choose Love: A Journey from Fear to Love,
to the top of two different Amazon categories, and has also helped other authors achieve similar results.

Even in the midst of a very challenging year, we wanted to take a moment to let you know how thankful we are to have you as part of the Author Learning Center (ALC) community.
We are so grateful that so many members are using the resources of the ALC to reach their goals and we are able to play a role in helping authors impact the lives of others with their books.
Our list of things to be thankful for is long, but since we have a turkey in the oven, we will just share a few of the things that are top of mind during this season. Members older than 70 years of age completing their books We have seen more and more people who cross "publishing a book" off their bucket list. They continue to be an inspiration to us because they show us you are never too old to realize your dreams.? Members from more than 120 countries helping each other I have often said, "Writing is a solitary activity, but the journey to becoming an author doesn't have to be if you have the ALC". But never did I imagine we would have members from so many places around the globe who help each other on their publishing journey.
Our fabulous list of webinar presenters We admit it.? We are unashamedly biased. No one comes close to offering the lineup of webinar presenters we have on the ALC and we are so grateful they are willing to share their experience and expertise to help our members.
Be well. Be
safe.

While it''s difficult for authors to rank for a large, general topic - say, "fiction books" - you still want to be able to rank for your author name, your books'' titles, and even your main character''s name. This webinar with author and content marketing expert Erik Deckers will show you what you need to do to start building SEO for your author website, and helping people discover you (and your books) on Google and other internet search engines.

Hi ,
Recently, one of your fellow members, Everlyne, told us, "I never felt alone or stuck because I had the ALC." That's because she knew she had expert advice, encouragement and accountability at her fingertips to help her with her book. Here are just a few examples to inspire, motivate, and equip you on your journey.
If you are in the writing stage and find yourself stalling, listen to the late Stan Lee, a legend and founder of Marvel
Comics, talk about the importance of perseverance.
Ready to edit your manuscript?Wayne Hoffman, author of Sweet Like Sugar, describes the multi-step editing process and the various people involved. Plus, he
gives insightful advice about what makes a good editor and a bad one, and how to tell the difference.
Before you publish, make sure you have a title that helps your book sell. This article, Tips for picking a good book title and sub title, will help you make sure you are putting your best foot and title forward.
When it is time to marketyour book, Author Connections founder Beth Kallman Werner offers some great ideas you can use in her recorded webinar, Efficient Social Media Tips for Authors.
While writing a book is a solitary activity, the journey of being an author doesn't have to be when you are a member of the ALC.

Dialogue records conversation. But it can do so much more--if you know how to wield it. Dialogue can provide subtle backstory, vivid characterization, or shoot a plot forward at high speed. Great dialogue is memorable and effective. Bad dialogue is cumbersome and can turn your reader (or potential editor) off quickly.
In this webinar, multi-published and best-selling author Allie Pleiter leads you through all the ways you can use dialogue within your story to pack a far bigger punch than "she said." She will cover:
Dialogue''s Basic Uses
Dialogue''s Common Misuses
Advanced Tactics
Quick Hacks to Improve Your Dialogue Instantly

This webinar with freelance publicist and
communications professional Lindsey Gobel will go over what an author can expect from working with a literary publicist, as well as detailed examples of what is involved in a publicity campaign. Gobel will talk about what the purpose of a publicity campaign is, and what a publicist does and doesn't do. She will also cover how an author can make the most of his or her campaign and help make the most of the process.
. The session will begin with the intro call and what Gobel would normally go over when she first "meets" an author. Then, she will talk about planning documents that she uses with the author during the campaign: the strategic campaign plan, the timeline and the press release. She will explain what these are and how to use them in a literary campaign.
. Next, Gobel will explain the weekly reports she sends to authors during a campaign. She will talk about the importance of communication and involving the author in the process so that he
or she can follow along with the campaign and can keep on top of anything needed throughout the campaign.
. Finally, Gobel will talk about the end of the campaign. She will go over what is included in the final report she sends to her authors, and what the next steps are going forward. Participants will learn what outcomes are typical and what happens after the process of active pitching to the media is over.

Strong stories need a plot, a setting, and most importantly, engaging characters. Agents and editors will tell you that all stories are character-driven. However, if your characters are stereotypes, one-dimensional, or predictable, the reader will soon lose interest. Readers are engaged with characters who are relatable, flawed, and unique. But how do you accomplish that in fiction?
In this webinar with award-winning author Jeanne Lyet Gassman, we will look at the tricks you can use to create strong, memorable characters that are supported by a fascinating cast. We will address a number of different character crafting techniques, including:
Defining your characters'' formative years
Understanding body language and the use of physical space
How opposites create tension and interest
Using dialogue to illustrate emotions and need
How to make troubled characters likable.

Point of View: The What, How and Why of Your Story's Perspective
April 21, 2020 at 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM ET (6:30 PM - 7:30 PM BST: UK)
?
?
?
Point of view is one of the most powerful and at the same time one of the most misunderstood tools in a writer's kit.
-Should genre help decide which point of view to choose? -Why are so many sci-fi stories and fantasies written in third-person narration? -Should memoirs always be written in first-person-narration? -And does that choice influence the story?
These are important questions. However, point of view goes beyond choosing the narrative mode. Broadly stated, point of view is the perspective from which a scene or an entire story is told. Do you tell your thriller from the murderer's point of view, the detective's, or the victim's? The drama from the perspective of the philandering husband, the lovesick lover, or the depressed wife? Point of view determines what the reader knows
and when, directs the way the story will flow, and shapes the narrator's voice, stance and attitude.
This webinar with editor Helga Schier will explore the pros and cons of common narrative points of view and how to avoid common pitfalls and traps.

How to Nail Your Book Launch with the Right Pricing and Distribution
June 9, 2020 at 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM ET (6:30 PM - 7:30 PM BST: UK)
?
?
?
Billig used one of these strategies to drive her book, I Choose Love: A Journey from Fear to
Love, to the top of two different Amazon categories, and has also helped other authors achieve similar results.
