Weekly Raw Steel Production - December 28, 2019

In the week ending on December 28, 2019, domestic raw steel production was 1,876,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 81.1 percent. Production was 1,861,000 net tons in the week ending December 28, 2018 while the capability utilization then was 79.4 percent. The current week production represents a 0.8 percent increase from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending December 28, 2019 is up 0.5 percent from the previous week ending December 21, 2019 when production was 1,866,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 80.7 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through December 28, 2019 was 96,326,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 80.2 percent. That is up 1.8 percent from the 94,638,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 78.2 percent.

Broken down by districts, here's production for the week ending December 28, 2019 in thousands of net tons: North East: 223; Great Lakes: 704; Midwest: 197; Southern: 664 and Western: 88 for a total of 1876.

The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage provided from 50% of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Adjusted year-to-date production through July 25, 2020 was 44,553,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 66.1 percent. That is down 20 percent from the 55,707,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 80.9 percent.

Weekly Raw Steel Production - March 7, 2020

In the week ending on March 7, 2020, domestic raw steel production was 1,903,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 81.6 percent. Production was 1,913,000 net tons in the week ending March 7, 2019 while the capability utilization then was 82.2 percent. The current week production represents a 0.5 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending March 7, 2020 is down 1.0 percent from the previous week ending February 29, 2020 when production was 1,923,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 82.5 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through March 7, 2020 was 18,253,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 81.8 percent. That is up 0.6 percent from the 18,141,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 81.6 percent.

Broken down by districts, here''s production for the week ending March 7, 2020 in thousands of net tons: North East: 237; Great Lakes: 687; Midwest: 202; Southern: 704 and Western: 73 for a total of 1903.

The Raw Steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage provided from 50% of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. The AISI production report "AIS 7", published monthly and available by subscription, provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing 75% of U.S. production capacity.

Note: Capability for the First Quarter 2020 is approximately 30.3 million tons compared to 29.9 million tons for the same period last year and 30.4 million tons for the Fourth Quarter of 2019.

Production was 1,913,000 net tons in the week ending March 28, 2019 while the capability utilization then was 82.2 percent. The current week production represents a 12.7 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending March 28, 2020 is down 9.8 percent from the previous week ending March 21, 2020 when production was 1,852,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 79.4 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through March 28, 2020 was 23,653,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 80.7 percent. That is down 1.0 percent from the 23,881,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 81.6 percent.

Broken down by districts, here''s production for the week ending March 28, 2020 in thousands of net tons: North East: 202; Great Lakes: 608; Midwest: 155; Southern: 645 and Western: 60 for a total of 1670.

Production was 1,841,000 net tons in the week ending August 15, 2019 while the capability utilization then was 79.1 percent. The current week production represents a 25.2 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending August 15, 2020 is up 1.7 percent from the previous week ending August 8, 2020 when production was 1,354,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 60.4 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through August 15, 2020 was 48,833,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 65.9 percent. That is down 20.3 percent from the 61,235,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 80.7 percent.

Broken down by districts, here''s production for the week ending August 15, 2020 in thousands of net tons: North East: 133; Great Lakes: 466; Midwest: 159; Southern: 548 and Western: 71 for a total of 1377.

From Concept to Delivery

The SSSBA is offering a free 6-part live-lecture educational series that will cover the design, fabrication and construction of steel bridges.

The course will be taught by Dr. Michael Barker, University of Wyoming, who has over 30 years of experience in bridge design and construction.

The live lectures will take place from September 8-24, every Tuesday & Thursday, from 7PM-8PM ET.

All registered participants who successfully complete the education series will receive a Certificate of Completion from the University of Wyoming.

For the first time, the lectures are open to non-students. But remaining space is very limited, so please register immediately to reserve a spot.

Adjusted year-to-date production through March 21, 2020 was 21,983,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 81.5 percent. That is up 0.1 percent from the 21,968,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 81.6 percent.

In the week ending on May 16, 2020, domestic raw steel production was 1,181,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 52.7 percent. Production was 1,880,000 net tons in the week ending May 16, 2019 while the capability utilization then was 80.8 percent. The current week production represents a 37.2 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending May 16, 2020 is down 1.9 percent from the previous week ending May 9, 2020 when production was 1,204,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 53.7 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through May 16, 2020 was 32,040,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 71.2 percent. That is down 13.6 percent from the 37,098,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 81.4 percent.

Broken down by districts, here''s production for the week ending May 16, 2020 in thousands of net tons: North East: 91; Great Lakes: 399; Midwest: 124; Southern: 507 and Western: 60 for a total of 1181.

Production for the week ending April 4, 2020 is down 8.1 percent from the previous week ending March 28, 2020 when production was 1,670,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 71.6 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through April 4, 2020 was 25,067,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 79.4 percent. That is down 2.7 percent from the 25,773,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 81.5 percent.

The current week production represents a 33.4 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending June 27, 2020 is up 1.3 percent from the previous week ending June 20, 2020 when production was 1,224,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 54.6 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through June 27, 2020 was 39,165,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 67.0 percent. That is down 18.9 percent from the 48,313,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 81.2 percent.

The current week production represents a 13.2 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending November 21, 2020 is up 0.1 percent from the previous week ending November 14, 2020 when production was 1,580,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 71.4 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through November 21, 2020 was 70,541,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 67.0 percent. That is down 18.6 percent from the 86,623,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 80.0 percent.
