The expo is only increasing in numbers. Our visitor numbers increased by 11% from 2018 to 2019 and the number of Directors and prime decision makers was up by 26%. It is also worth noting that the 2019 delegate registration list consisted of people from 71 different countries, compared to 47 countries in 2018.

As we develop our next report, Pathways to 2030, setting the roadmap to realising this potential, and prepare for the World Biogas Summit in October where it will be presented, we are delighted to bring to you the World Biogas eFestival, a virtual conference to provide a global perspective of the biogas markets and bring the biogas community together to support each other and feed into the report.

A region by region outlook

The World Biogas eFestival will feature geographically-focused sessions with interactive presentations and panel discussions looking at the status of the biogas industry in a specific region, reviewing its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it faces. The sessions will also feature case studies from around the world which you are invited to contribute (see the call for case studies below).

The common goal with the World Biogas e-Festival is to:

highlight the use of biogas worldwide, share best practice,
discuss new innovations,
understand policy contexts,
address questions around technological challenges and opportunities and,
feed in to the upcoming WBA report Pathways to 2030 and the World Biogas Summit.

Topics relevant to the industry worldwide will also be discussed, such as food waste collections and quality, upgrading to biomethane, digestate output and treatment and safeguarding health and safety in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

The discussions and case studies shared at this online event will feed in directly to the next WBA report, Pathway to 2030 and in to the programme for The World Biogas Summit, held on 7-8 October in Birmingham, UK, where we will present a roadmap to achieving a 12% cut in global GHGs by 2030 by developing the biogas sector around the world.

Delegates will have the ability network face to face on roundtables, exchange knowledge, views and experience with fellow professionals from around the world - all from the comfort of their home or office.

The online platform will enable delegates to ask questions to the speakers and enjoy virtual networking opportunities between each session.

Background

The development of alternative waste treatment methods and the need for non-fossil-fuel-based energy sources have led to the growth of the anaerobic digestion (AD) industry which produces biogas. In the United States, for example, 18 states have utility programmes, state legislative proposals or regulatory actions that promote the residential or commercial use of upgraded biogas (also known as "biomethane" or "Renewable Natural Gas"). "Ask WBA" will examine how public demand facilitates investment in biogas and other key lessons.

Earlier this week we announced the postponement of The World Biogas Expo and World Biogas Summit to 7-8 October 2020, if you missed it, you can read the statement here.

During this time of uncertainty we will continue business as usual as much as we can.

Scotland is ahead of the game when it comes to integrating waste and energy streams and food and farming production, to deliver net zero. The Scottish Conference will provide an overview of circular economy policy in Scotland and the contribution of AD in helping to deliver 'net zero' by 2045.

ADBA joins global event to speak about food waste collections in the UK

We are part of a global industry and to reach our full potential of decarbonising the global economy by 12% we need to work collaboratively.
We are therefore proud to support the World Biogas Association''s upcoming event, World Biogas eFestival.

Rebecca Thompson, Senior Policy Manager at ADBA will be chairing the food waste session on 19 May.

Treating food waste in Europe: sharing experiences and preparing for separate collection by 2023

As the EU looks ahead to 2023 when all members states must implement separate collection of household food waste, the European AD industry must ready itself for the generation of new food waste feedstock. The effective implementation of this policy in the EU, and similar policy in the rest of Europe, is vital to ensuring that this valuable feedstock is treated in the optimal way - through AD. This session will explore lessons learnt from countries at the forefront of food waste recycling to understand how to effectively deliver these policies, and will look at the barriers to effective introduction to collectively identify solutions.
