wardrobe goals for Q1 by
Welcome to Wardrobe Goals - our quarterly report on what’s inspiring us in the world of ethical, sustainable style and beyond. We believe that the best clothing is created with politics, culture and the wider world in mind, so that’s what we’re aiming to bring to you.
1. fresh in online
Ourlimited edition Katie Jones collaboration line has dropped, consisting of four thoughtful products. Made with upcycled yarnsby a group of older women at a community centre in Enfield.
Each upcycleddenim Day Jacket and Market bag is hand crocheted using leftover denim from our friends at Wool & The Gang. Offcuts get scooped up and re-spun rather than heading to a landfill, saving 20,000 litres of water for every kilogram of up-cycled denim.

2. dropping next month
We’re planning something exciting. You may know that we’re making the switch to made-to-order - as it’s better for us, the planet and and our makers. We can’t wait to share it with you. For now, here’s a sneak peak of our moodboards and influences.
3. what we're reading
All hail Minju - An Ode To Next In Fashion's Minju Kim "But it’s not just her kind heart and constant cheer that makes her so endearing. For a show about something as reality-detached as fashion, she’s just so damned relatable."
We're so glad to see classic, non fair weather trends taking the lead on the streets this year from Copenhagen Fashion Week Street Style. Camel trench coats, two piece suits and dad trainers to last into the next decade in abundance.
“With many global brands and consumers striving for holistically ethical manufacturing and sourcing, the Danish capital set the tone for what to expect from the collections"
Over on our blog: sustainability 101: the valentine's edit Who says you have to wait until next year to get the finer things in life bought for you? Treat yourself to some sustainable treats if you don't get what you desire.

keep us in bloom
We have some exciting news. Do you like what we do but can''t always afford our clothing? Worried about small businesses and social enterprises keeping afloat in this difficult time? Want to learn more about ethical fashion or what we can do to help?
To support our future and keep us in bloom this spring, we''re asking you to sign up to our new Patreon blog, from only ?1 per month.
This will allow us to support our makers as we pause all production and postage to keep them safe. In return you''ll get exclusive voting rights on new products, behind the scenes content, and all the news we''re following about the garment industry. ?
If everyone on this list signed up, we could guarantee full wages for all our makers unable to work throughout the crisis, with money for our emergency fund to spare.

The Lowdown: what's happening to the fashion industry amidst COVID-19
Today we're giving a round up of all the bad business practises which are unfortunately, now coming out in the wash of a global pandemic.
As could perhaps be predicted, brands with already terrible reputations on pensions, human rights and putting the safety of workers on the backseat have continued to do exactly this. However, one silver lining may be the level of public scrutiny we've observed....

Roksana - one of our screenprinters - at home with her family back in the day
an important update.
Due to the government lock down and social distancing measures, our workshops and warehouse are now closed for the time being. Our number one priority is to keep our workers safe, which means unfortunately that there will be a significant delay to all pre-orders.
We are incredibly grateful for your support and patience at this time. If you have not yet recieved your items and want to get in touch, we shall be online on support@birdsong.london or on our support WhatApp to chat. We''re also happy through any customer queries - sizing, style advice etc.
We really want to be able to support our seamstresses as much as possible during this time, and with our makers being from low income backgrounds we really appreciate your continued support of them and us.
online shop still open
Please do continue to put orders in, and as soon as the world is a little bit safer we''ll get to it. We''ll keep making beautiful clothes you''ll feel good in and supporting local, Living Wage jobs to the people who need it most as long as we have your continued support. We''ve been blown away by your support so far - thank you from the bottom of our hearts and hope you''re staying safe.
With love, The Birdsong Team x
an update on our makers
Times are still precarious and scary, but we''re keeping in touch with our makers even though production is postponed.?
Our older knitters are self isolating, have their families to look out for them, and are grateful to have their own knitting projects to get through.?
Our warehouse staff were sent home last week, as many have pre-existing health conditions. Mail Out is closing its doors now but want you to know that every order placed now will help their trainees in future.?
Our seamstresses are at home with their families, and we''ve created an emergency fund pot for anything that might arise. You can contribute to this at paypal.me/birdsonglondon and of course 30% of all sales will be banked as Living Wages from sales. We can pay this to our makers in advance if they need this.?
Our head office team have been working home for nearly two weeks now, and are just about getting used to it.
Crafted for London Living Wages by talented women facing barriers to work, and packed by adults with learning disabilities.

support our maker''s emergency fund
As you can imagine, it''s a tough time for small business, and and even tougher time for the people that we work with, coming from low income backgrounds and facing barriers to other forms of work. That''s why for every Dress In Protest T-shirt we sell this week, we''ll be putting 30% in an emergency pot for our makers.
It''s also super soft, and great oversized for lounging around the house in whilst sticking to your values.

hey, we''re back!
Our small team is back in business after 3 months of furlough, and we''re SO thankful for your incredible support. We''re not out of the woods yet, but we couldn''t have made it through this year without you.
Our warehouse trainees have been shielding at home due their disabilities, and it''s been super tough on everyone, but the full Mail Out team return to work in Kentish Town, North London, on 10th August. Our two very own co-founders will be posting out all of your t-shirt and mask orders this week to give our warehouse a chance to catch their breath. FYI it''s Sophie''s birthday Thursday so she will be taking that day off to for socially distanced sweating in the park - expect your tees to arrive the following week :)
As we''re acutely aware, our seamstresses are incredibly at risk in the pandemic due to myriad structural inequalities. Bangladeshi people are twice as likely to die from the virus than white people in the UK. Added to this is the fact that our makers live and work in Tower Hamlets - the most unequal borough in England, with 1 in 4 adults living in poverty. With additional caring responsibilities alongside childcare, our six seamstresses are slowly returning to the workshop in Limehouse Town Hall, for a day each per week, to ensure maximum safety and social distancing.
We anticipate all past dress orders being sent out by late September and really appreciate your patience and support. You can get in touch on our customer service WhatsApp for your own order specific updates. We''ve also updated all made-to-order product names so you can see how long your order will roughly take to be made and shipped.
birdsong customers - the best people in the world
From all the understanding and encouraging messages you''ve sent, to funding a return ticket home for our embroiderer Mona, and supporting us when we didn''t have a clue when we''d be open again, we know we have the world''s best people as our customers. Thank you.

the 2020 impact report from
a note from the founder
We founded Birdsong based on our experiences working with marginalised women on the frontline, in women''s organisations in the UK. We are an ethical and sustainable fashion brand, but first and foremost we''re a social enterprise.
This means that even through tough times like this global crisis, our number one priority is the well being of our makers. With your support we can come out of this and continue to provide meaningful, dignified work and living wages to the local communities we support.
Thank you, we couldn''t do this without you x
43% of children in Tower Hamlets are living in poverty
58% of all neighbourhoods in the borough rank in the top 20 percent of income and employment deprivation
78% of Bangladeshi and Pakistani women in the borough are long term unemployed and face significant discrimination and barriers to becoming employed
100% of our makers agreed, and 60% 'Strongly Agreed' to the statement 'working with Birdsong improves my quality of life.
90% of women''s organisations across London, and the UK identify funding as one of the main challenges they currently face
The average percentage across our organisations, of revenue that came from Birdsong work in 2018 was 45%. In 2019 it was 75%
"Revenue from Birdsong helps us better plan for the future and fund future projects." - 50% agree, 50% strongly agree
"Our work with Birdsong is a really important part of our organisation" - 50% agree, 50% strongly agree
"Most of the money goes back to makers (?10.75ph), and the percentage that goes back to charity (?4.25ph) feeds back into the rent, to provide facilities for women to work from and women to train in"
In 2018 we made ?3,041 in income for our seamstresses at grassroots community arts charity Stitches in Time. Based in Limehouse, Tower Hamlets, SIT was founded in 1993 in order to provide training, access and employment to women of colour from migrant backgrounds.
Last year we increased our work with this charity by 2.7x, to ?8,431.
We already have ?10,000 of labour costs to pay to Stitches in Time when the crisis is over, thanks to your support for our Spring Summer collection.
In 2019 we switched to using 100% natural or reclaimed fibres
and diversified our use of innovative materials. We''ve also continued to cut down on waste by doing limited editions, an entirely pre-order collection, and turning scrap fabric into bags and scrunchies. We use hand spun, fair trade cotton Khadi from India, and closed loop TENCEL from China before finishing everything in the UK.
In 2018 we worked closely with 4 charitable organisations
In 2019 we increased that to 6
In 2018 we paid out ?13,259 in wages to 11 low income women, and an additional ?1,662 to charities that support them
We aimed for ?30,000 for 2019, and surpassed this, making ?38,432 for 11 low income people and the charities that support them
By 2022, our goal is to provide 11,000 hours of living wage work annually.
"I came to classes at Stitches in Time for 5 years, and have been working in the charity for 10 years now. I am one of the main manufacturers for FabricWorks and I have made many items for Birdsong and many more. I feel so happy and proud to make things for so many people. The money I have earned means I am able to support my family."

real talk: a maker update
We''ve been getting a few questions about our makers, and in the interests of being as transparent as possible, we wanted to give our Patrons an update. We''re in the lucky position of knowing all our makers by name and while we don''t all work on one site (due to lack of space/funding in London we work with small, pre-existing organisations) we''re keeping in touch as best we can.

Hey folks, a quick coronavirus update.
We''re really lucky that due to the nature of our business, our fabric is being printed in Lancashire and our clothing is made in Tower Hamlets. Our workshops are remaining open for now, providing much needed local work for our women makers, within walking distance of their homes.
However, if schools are shut down locally, there is a chance we''ll need to postpone production. For the time being, all orders placed now will go into production as usual. We really want to be able to support our seamstresses as much as possible during this time, and with our makers being from low income backgrounds we really appreciate your continued support of them and us.
We''ll also be online to chat through any customer queries - sizing, style advice etc on support@birdsong.london or on our support WhatApp. If you''re thinking of putting an order in, best to do it sooner rather than later, but we''ll do our best to keep making beautiful clothes you''ll feel good in as long as we can keep everyone safe.
Hope you''re all taking care of yourselves and each other.
Big love from the Birdsong team X
