The arrival of any new Quentin Tarantino movie is a reason to celebrate. They only come around once every so often, they inspire all manner of interesting debates, and they're never, ever bad. ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, Tarantino's ninth (and, according to the man himself, penultimate) movie might just be his masterpiece.

To celebrate, this week's BMD Newsletter is entirely Quentin Tarantino-themed. The Summer is most definitely here.

Whole bunch of stuff happening this week, friends, and most of it was good!

For starters, we saw Ari Aster's HEREDITARY follow-up, MIDSOMMAR, and are pleased to report that it'll shake you to your very core. We also learned that Blumhouse is gearing up to shoot a sequel to last year's HALLOWEEN, and that Jamie Lee Curtis is back on board to play Laurie Strode one last time! And if that's not enough horror news for you, how about this: Glenn Danzig (of all people) just made the horror genre's answer to THE ROOM. We've seen that one, too, and it blew our damn minds.

Elsewhere, we got a look at a few new photos from the set of Amazon's DARK TOWER series (it looks great); found out the Alamo Drafthouse is finally opening their Los Angeles location next month; we were absolutely not surprised upon learning that Marvel's bringing AVENGERS: ENDGAME back to theaters with new footage (the better to beat AVATAR's worldwide box office record with, naturally); and - last, but certainly not least - we celebrated the news that Netflix's I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE is getting a second season.

You want trailers? 'Cuz we got trailers.

This year's SDCC is already in full swing, and with its arrival has come an onslaught of new posters, project announcements and - perhaps most importantly - brand spankin' new movie trailers. Sooo many new trailers.

Yesterday alone delivered four of them to our door, including our first look at Tom Hooper's CATS (the response was not great!), our latest look at IT: CHAPTER TWO (somehow not as scary as the CATS trailer), a truly awesome new trailer for James Gray's INTERSTELLAR-esque AD ASTRA (starring Brad Pitt as the world's most handsomest astronaut) and our very first peek at the long-awaited TOP GUN sequel, TOP GUN: MAVERICK. Just tons of new stuff.

You can find all of these trailers, along with new footage from David Leitch's TERMINATOR: DARK FATE and, uh, Rob Zombie's 3 FROM HELL, via the links we've provided for you below. Every last one of 'em is worth watching.

But that wasn't all you shouldn't have missed on the site this week! We also scored an exclusive first look at Titan Books' amazing new tome, THE MAKING OF ALIEN (and an interview with the author!), learned that Quentin Tarantino's long-gestating STAR TREK project would basically be "PULP FICTION in space", found out our Austin friends will soon be seeing TOMBSTONE and TOP GUN with Val Kilmer in attendance (we're so hyped), and - last, but certainly not least - we found out that Taika Waititi is coming back to direct the next THOR movie. Good news wherever you look!

It's The End Of The X-MEN Franchise As We Know It (And We Feel Fine)

Simon Kinberg's DARK PHOENIX arrives in theaters this weekend after a number of production delays, setbacks and reshoots. It brings Fox's decades-long X-MEN franchise to a close with a retelling of the Dark Phoenix Saga, and...well, we had some good times over the years, X-MEN, but it's time to move on now. You will be missed (until the inevitable MCU reboot, which oughtta be announced any time now).

Meanwhile, HBO's CHERNOBYL - surely due to be named amongst the 2019's best TV shows come year's end - brought things to a chilling conclusion; the very first AD ASTRA trailer arrived, sending Brad Pitt into space on a most dangerous mission; an animated JURASSIC PARK TV series was announced; and the Russo Brothers revealed that they were bringing MAGIC: THE GATHERING to Netflix.

That wasn't all, though. As you'll see below, we also learned about a potential DJANGO UNCHAINED sequel (which may or may not have Quentin Tarantino co-writing the script), questioned our allegiance to the GODZILLA franchise, found out about a brand-new, Pride Month-friendly edition of THE BABADOOK, and we had our eyeballs melted by a stunningly colorful poster for Patty Jenkins' WONDER WOMAN 1984.

The fact that Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP is a sequel to THE SHINING is no secret - we've known what DOCTOR SLEEP is for years, ever since Stephen King published the novel. But this week we learned that Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP isn't just a sequel to THE SHINING - it's a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's version of THE SHINING. We were, to say the least, surprised.

That wasn't the only surprise this week: we also learned that Denis Villeneuve is spearheading a new DUNE TV series, to coincide with the director's DUNE film (due next year from Legendary); that Steven Spielberg is writing a horror series for the Quibi streaming service; that LOBO (of all characters) is getting his own Syfy series; and, last but certainly not least, that Keanu Reeves will star in the highly-anticipated video game CYBERPUNK 2077.

Much Like Spider-Man, Summer Is In Full Swing

The sun is shining, the heat index is through the roof, the beers are on ice, and Spider-Man is headed back to theaters. Summer 2019 feels like it's been going on for months now, but for our money - it's really only just beginning.

We caught SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME earlier this week, and are pleased to report the news is good (you can read our review below). Three decades past the arrival of Tim Burton's BATMAN, superhero movies are bigger than ever, and after a few rocky entries, the SPIDER-MAN franchise really appears to have found its footing again. More importantly, this new one has Mysterio in it. Do you have any idea how long we've been waiting to see Mysterio in a SPIDER-MAN movie? Literally forever. Get hyped.

But SPIDER-MAN wasn't all we had on our minds this week. We also learned that Taika Waititi's working on an animated FLASH GORDON movie, saw the first trailer for the new CHARLIE'S ANGELS, officially launched our board game coverage (starting with a people VS. dinosaur game called RAPTOR), and got a look at the first behind-the-scenes footage from Cary Fukanaga's (as yet untitled) BOND 25.

Pretty good week, all in all, and now it's time for the weekend. We'll be at the pool or inside a movie theater until Monday. What've y'all got going on? Anything fun?

Well. This was quite a week, wasn't it?

We found out Andy Serkis might be directing the sequel to VENOM (sure, that seems like a good idea). We spoke with Mike Moh, who plays Bruce Lee in Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (you really wanna read this interview). The first trailer for Robert Eggers' THE LIGHTHOUSE showed up and completely derailed our productivity for about two hours. Oh, and then we found out Stephen King is writing an all-new final chapter for Josh Boone's THE STAND series.

It's beginning to look a lot like Halloween...

Technically speaking, summer ain't over yet, but it's already starting to feel like Halloween, isn't it? Amazon's working on an EVENT HORIZON TV series, David Fincher's MINDHUNTER returns in a matter of days, IT: CHAPTER TWO will be along before we know it, and this weekend Andr� �vredal's excellent SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK lands in theaters. If you're into spooky stuff, this week was overflowing with good news.

But there was also exciting stuff for you non-horror fans out there: Disney and Lucasfilm announced their first, big non-STAR WARS, non-INDIANA JONES project (it sounds awesome), Quentin Tarantino shared some new thoughts and his next (and, ostensibly, final) movie, Taika Waititi lined up a brand-new project (sounds like another underdog tale, this one based on a true story), and we found out Tom Hardy is helping to write the VENOM 2 script.

The Calm Before The SDCC Storm

It's the final week before this year's SDCC, which means things are quiet. A bit too quiet, if you ask us (not that quiet is disturbing, mind you; we're just bored).

The good news is, we kept things lively over at BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH., extrapolating our feelings on last week's big releases (MIDSOMMAR, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME), looking back at some old faves, and taking the time to watch a movie with Willie Nelson out under the Texas stars. This was all a very welcome respite, and we are thankful the Entertainment News Gods went easy on us this week.

Hello, and welcome to the weekend.

We don't know what you folks have planned, but the BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH. crew has one prime directive over the next few days: mainline the hell out of Netflix's MINDHUNTER Season 2. It's basically all we can think about.

But, yes, I suppose other things happened this week. The debate surrounding Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD entered its third straight week. Paramount/Hasbro announced yet another G.I. JOE movie (and has promised to bring back a certain fan favorite character). The first trailer for Craig Brewer's highly-anticipated DOLEMITE IS MY NAME exploded onto the internet. Oh yeah, and Universal canceled the release of THE HUNT.

But, wait - there's more! We also learned that JACKIE director Pablo Lorrain will direct Apple's forthcoming adaptation of Stephen King's LISEY'S STORY, we got our very first look at Richard Stanley's THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE, Neill Blomkamp decided to walk away from ROBOCOP RETURNS, Dave Chappelle announced another Netflix stand-up special, and we took a look inside the newly-opened Los Angeles Alamo Drafthouse. Phew. Busy week.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

Well, folks. What can I tell you? This week was a real rollercoaster.

Things started off quietly enough, with a trailer for the new RAMBO and the title reveal for the 25th James Bond movie, but then - right around the middle of the week - all hell broke loose: Warner Bros. announced a new MATRIX movie starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss; Disney and Sony ended their lucrative SPIDER-MAN partnership, calling the character's place within the MCU into question; the UNCHARTED movie lost its fifth (!!!) director; and then, to top it all off, Liam Neeson decided to match wits against a frozen ocean.

Yo, Dawg, We Heard You Like Trailers...

So, I'll just level with you: this was not what you'd call a "news heavy" week.

Oh, a few things happened - we reviewed Fred Durst's THE FANATIC (long story short: don't), Martin Scorsese's THE IRISHMAN got a release date (a few of them, to be precise), we found out that Taika Waititi might be joining James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD, and learned that Richard Linklater's next film will take two decades to complete - but for the most part, this week was all about trailers. So many trailers. More trailers than we can even fit in this email.

But we've done what we can! Below, find all of our favorite trailers from the week, including new looks at STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, JOKER, and LUCY IN THE SKY, as well as our first looks at Soderbergh's THE LAUNDROMAT and EL CAMINO, which pretty much everyone's gonna be calling THE BREAKING BAD MOVIE. Beep-Beep: Pennywise is Back!

Last weeks a big one for us Stephen King nerds here at BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH.: after a two year absence, everyone's favorite dancing clown returned to theaters! That's right - even as we speak, you can catch Andy Muschietti's IT CHAPTER TWO in movie houses all over the country. We imagine that many of you will, or already have, and we hope you enjoyed it (if you're still on the fence about catching the film, you can read our review below).

But that's not all we had to celebrate last week: we also watched TOMBSTONE in an old-timey ghost town with Val Kilmer in attendance (see our report below); found out that the Alamo Drafthouse is bringing every RAMBO movie back to theaters; we caught the first BAD BOYS FOR LIFE trailer (it's, well, I guess that one's not so exciting); and we got our first look at some of the wares headed to next weekend's MondoCon (heads up, MIDSOMMAR fans).

Send In The Clowns...

This week, we had boots on the ground at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. We saw Rian Johnson's KNIVES OUT (it's great!), Trey Edward Shults' WAVES (bring Kleenex!) The Tom Hanks/Mr. Rogers movie (bring Kleenex to this one, too!), the Safdie Bros.' UNCUT GEMS (it's excellent) and Todd Phillips' highly-anticipated, Golden Lion-winning JOKER. You can read our review for that one below, but the long and short is: we're just not convinced that one's as dangerous as everyone says it is. Your mileage may vary!

Meanwhile, out in the real world, we learned about a new movie headed our way from RAW director Julia Ducournau, a FACE/OFF remake that literally no one was asking for, discovered who'll be playing the notorious Randall Flagg in Josh Boone's THE STAND limited series, and we got a brand new look at the very awesome-looking QUEEN & SLIM. We did it.
We survived Fantastic Fest 2019.

This past week, the majority of the BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH. crew has been gathered in downtown Austin, TX for this year's Fantastic Fest, the Alamo Drafthouse's yearly gathering of the film geeks, taking in a slew of new genre movies, parties, and no small amount of beer. We reviewed roughly 40 films out of this year's Fest (you can find all of this year's reviews indexed here), but do be aware that our favorites included Richard Stanely's COLOR OUT OF SPACE, Taika Waititi's JOJO RABBIT, Rian Johnson's KNIVES OUT, and Craig Brewer's stunning DOLEMITE IS MY NAME. Lots and lots of good stuff headed your way, gang. Get hyped.

In the meantime, there wasn't much happening on the news front, but we did get our first clear look at THE IRISHMAN's de-aging effects, learned that Jonah Hill is joining the cast of Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN, and finally - after what feels like years of waiting - got to see a trailer for UNCUT GEMS. Who's ready to laugh this weekend?

This Week Had No Strong Throughline

Typically speaking, any given week has a strong throughline: it's a week with a million trailers! A week where everyone's talking about Batman! A week where some studio makes a really bad decision and said decision generates a number of tangential news stories about how bad the decision was! This was not such a week.

Indeed, I've been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to think of a throughline for this week's developments, and ultimately I've decided on "the lack of a throughline" being the throughline. Not particularly exciting, I'll give you that, but you try writing these intros week after week (they have me in a cell, send help).

But let's talk about what did occur!

First of all, we saw Ang Lee's GEMINI MAN (the news isn't great, sorry to say). We also learned that JOKER might get a sequel, after all (surprise, surprise). We interviewed THE DEATH OF DICK LONG director Daniel Scheinert, almost fell asleep during LUCY IN THE SKY, spoke with Sam Mendes about his new "one-shot" WWII movie, and received some, ah, not terribly exciting news about BALLERINA, the long-gestating JOHN WICK spin-off.

Lots and Lots of Cool Stuff This Week.

Well, this was an unexpectedly exciting week, wasn't it? TERMINATOR: DARK FATE screened for critics and turned out to be pretty damn good, HBO's WATCHMEN arrived and also turned out to be pretty damn good, and then we got a final trailer for JJ Abrams' STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, and guess what? That's right: that trailer's pretty damn good, too. Huzzah!

But that's not all we had going on. Elsewhere, we spoke to Taika Waititi about this weekend's JOJO RABBIT; got our very first look at footage from Vin Diesel's BLOODSHOT; reviewed Robert Eggers' THE LIGHTHOUSE (that's a wild movie, gang), and learned that Conan O'Brien (of all people) has joined the cast of Hideo Kojima's highly-anticipated DEATH STRANDING. Who would've thought, all the way back on Monday, that this is where the week might take us?

Let's get right to it. There's much to discuss.

Well, this was a bonkers week, wasn't it?

Seemed like every time we turned around, an unexpected curveball was headed straight for us: David Benioff and DB Weiss walking away from their already-greenlit STAR WARS trilogy? It happened! HBO passing on Jane Goldman's GAME OF THRONES prequel, which had already filmed a pilot with Naomi Watts? They really did. Nicolas Cage signing on to star in a movie that'll feature him fighting evil, animatronic animals in a haunted amusement park? Folks, it's real, and we cannot wait. If nothing else, this week def wasn't dull.

But that's far from everything that occurred. The second episode of HBO's WATCHMEN knocked us all on our asses. HBO Max announced it was getting its very own GREEN LANTERN series, from the one and only Greg Berlanti. We saw TERMINATOR: DARK FATE (it's pretty good!) and Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP (also pretty good!). Oh, and HBO greenlit another GAME OF THRONES prequel to series, something called THE HOUSE OF DRAGONS.

Another week with much going on.

Well, lots to get through this week, so let's just get right to it, shall we?

James Mangold's FORD V FERRARI hits theaters today (you can read our review below), and if Christian Bale doesn't end up nominated at this year's Oscars we can probably just cancel the whole thing. It's one of the best performances he's ever given, and the movie's well worth seeing just for that (and the A+ racing footage).

Meanwhile, Richard Stanley's COLOR OUT OF SPACE and Leigh Whanell's THE INVISIBLE MAN both got brand-new trailers; we found out M. Night Shyamalan's next project involves a couple who own a fake baby; some ghoulish clowns decided to "hire" James Dean to star in their new Vietnam movie; and we took a look inside Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' WATCHMEN: VOL. ONE soundtrack (guess what? It's amazing).

On top of all that, we've got news on the James Bond front, a STAR WARS state-of-the-union, and the reveal that Colin Farrell is playing The Penguin in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN. Any Of You NOT watching Disney+?

Well, Disney's long-awaited and heavily-hyped streaming service finally arrived this week, and with it came no shortage of conversations: newly-altered STAR WARS movies, a brand-new STAR WARS series, THE SIMPSONS in the wrong aspect ratio - it's been a non-stop torrent of chatter since Disney+ arrived, and we were pulled into the fray along with everyone else. Kind of impossible to avoid, really.

Meanwhile, we learned that Keanu Reeves is playing a magical tumbleweed in next year's THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN, found out the next BEVERLY HILLS COP is headed straight to Netflix, we saw Bill Condon's THE GOOD LIAR (it's good!) and we tried to figure out who THE BATMAN's mysterious new character might be.

...because quite a bit happened this week.

It's the week before Thanksgiving, and boy did Hollywood not hold back on the news (we assume they're trying to get it all out of their systems before they go on break, and we thank them for it). So, let's talk about what went down!

First of all, we found out that Nicolas Cage may be starring as Nicolas Cage in the most Nicolas Cage movie ever made (you can read the plot synopsis via the link below, and you should - it's a doozy). We got our very first look at Harrison Ford's first post-STAR WARS movie, CALL OF THE WILD (where his co-star is a very adorable CGI dog). The first trailer for a horror movie called ANTEBELLUM arrived out of nowhere and kicked our ass; a new, Neil Blomkamp-free ROBOCOP RETURNS was announced; and it was revealed that NEON will soon be bringing Bong Joon-ho's MEMORIES OF MURDER back to. Oh, and there's a new trailer for CATS. Hug your loved ones.

What will next week bring? Probably a fairly slow news cycle, plus a whole bunch of turkey. We'll be back next Saturday to let you know what you missed, though, so don't sweat it if you're traveling.

Well, the new STAR WARS is almost here.

Next week's gonna be a big one for the STAR WARS fans in the crowd: at long last, the Skywalker Saga is coming to an end with JJ Abrams' STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. We know very little about the movie - only what we've seen (and been partially spoiled by!) in the trailers - but by this time next week it'll all be over. We'll know everything. Kinda wild to think about!

But that's not all that's on our mind this week! Elsewhere, we learned that a new adaptation of THE DARK HALF is headed to theaters (our guess: they're gonna gender-swap it and cast Elizabeth Moss in the lead); we watched and reviewed Michael Bay's 6 UNDERGROUND (it's very explode-y!); the Movie Gods gifted us with 15 seconds' worth of new footage from CATS; and we were dumbfounded by this year's crop of Golden Globe nominations (they forgot some folks).

The End is finally here...

Well, it's been over 40 years, but as of this weekend the Skywalker Saga has come to a close. Critics and fans don't seem, uh, very thrilled about the ending conjured by JJ Abrams and screenwriter Chris Terrio, but you can read more about that in our review (embedded below).

Meanwhile, Tom Hooper's CATS has landed in theaters. Everything you've heard about that one is true, up to and including the fact that CATS is basically critic-proof: we could tell you how grotesque, bizarre, and unspeakably horny Hooper's film is, but what possible difference would it make? If You're Reading This, You Survived 2019

Congratulations! You made it all the way through 2019, and are now officially living in the future. Two-thousand and twenty, even. Drink it in! So far, 2020 seems like "2019, but even more so", but it's only three days into the new decade. Let's give it a moment before we make any hard judgments. Who knows? Maybe this'll be a good one!

While we're waiting to find out: was kind of a slow week out there, what with the holidays and Hollywood more or less on an extended vacation until next Monday, but we did have a few worthwhile bits of news fall in our laps. For instance, Disney+'s WANDAVISON got bumped to a 2020 release from its originally planned-for 2021 reveal (huzzah!); Sony's UNCHARTED movie lost yet another director (no, seriously); both GRETEL & HANSEL and A QUIET PLACE PART II dropped brand-new trailers on us; and - last, but certainly not least - we got a very brief update on what to expect from THE MANDALORIAN S2.

The entertainment news front has offered us quite a bit to be hopeful about this week, with Netflix finally allowing its users to disable the "autoplay trailer" function while scanning their feeds, Lionsgate announcing that a KNIVES OUT sequel is a go, Sam Raimi in talks to direct DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS (!!!), the Alamo Drafthouse launching a brand-new letterpressed poster series, and - last, but certainly not least - the arrival of a new trailer for the latest SAW movie (now called SPIRAL) that looks...pretty great, actually? Well, the year's off to a weird start.

Lots of curveballs this week, so let's just jump right into it.

For starters, director Scott Derrickson left the highly-anticipated DOCTOR STRANGE sequel (over the dreaded "creative differences"); Adam McKay and Bong Joon-ho were revealed to be teaming up on an HBO limited series based on Bong's award-winning PARASITE; we spoke with living legend Rob Sheridan about seeing Tom Hooper's CATS on mushrooms (he did NOT have a good time); and we learned that Christian Bale may appear in Taika Waititi's THOR: LOVE & THUNDER.

But wait! There's more! We also took a look at Brad Pitt's very first major film role (it's a doozy); got an early look - perhaps TOO early of a look - at James Cameron's AVATAR 2; the first new trailer for Josh Boone's THE NEW MUTANTS appeared after a two-year hiatus; and, last but certainly not least, we learned that Hans Zimmer may be scoring the next James Bond movie.

Another exciting week! Who'd a thought?

This was quite the week here at BMD HQ! For starters, our friends at NEON had one helluva Sunday, watching Bong Joon-ho's PARASITE pull off a massive victory at the Oscars, where it brought home four (FOUR!) little gold guys. Congrats to them, and congrats to us on getting to watch PARASITE whenever we want (it's on Blu-ray now, and headed to Criterion in the near future).

Meanwhile, Universal decided to release the controversial THE HUNT, after all; James Bobin was announced as in talks to direct Ryan Reynolds in a new version of CLUE; Mondo announced a giant-sized GODZILLA showcase for this year's SXSW; and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG...turned out to be pretty good?

Well, THAT was a weird week...

The Super Bowl is upon us, and with it will arrive a number of new trailers, TV spots, posters and the like. Some of the material's already landed online (just this morning, for instance, Paramount dropped their Super Bowl spot for A QUIET PLACE PART II), more will arrive on Sunday. Until then, we've got this week's very, very weird batch of stories to contend with.

For one thing, we learned that the Safdie Bros., last seen getting snubbed by the Academy for their brilliant work on UNCUT GEMS, have been approached about directing a "dark PEE-WEE movie", something in the vein of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. We also discovered that ROCKETMAN's Taron Egerton is in talks to headline a remake of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS; that Walton Goggins will soon be hunting Mel Gibson (who'll be playing Santa Claus) in a movie called FATMAN; and that multiple parties are trying to get an UNDER THE SKIN TV series off the ground. Yeah, it's been one of those weeks.

Well, The Post-Oscar Blues Seem To Have Set In...

With the Academy Awards over and done with for another year and the Summer Movie Season still a few months in our future, things have settled down a bit in Hollywood. Maybe everyone's still out drinking and partying with Bong Joon-ho? Whatever the case may be, this was a relatively slow week on the entertainment news beat...but it was not without its surprises.

We watched and reviewed Harrison Ford's latest, CALL OF THE WILD (it's pretty good!), learned that Martin McDonagh is getting the IN BRUGES band back together, discovered that Paramount's reboot of THE SAINT is not as dead as we thought it was, and got our very first look at Fangoria's new movie, a remake of CASTLE FREAK. We also gave the Deepfake movement what-for, learned about a new horror/comedy series being put together by Taika Waititi, got an INDIANA JONES 5 update, and - last, but certainly not least - learned that the Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder will soon be working together.
