I don't know about you, but as the impeachment trial grinds on, the one idea that keeps coming back to me is this:
We wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for the Electoral College.
After all, three million more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump. We didn't vote for this. We knew it would end up here.
The Electoral College is the reason we're headed so badly in the wrong direction. After all, Democrats have won more votes in six of the last seven presidential elections. And four of the five Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices were named by George W. Bush and Donald Trump.
It's pretty frustrating.
Here's the thing: Senator Merkley has proposed a constitutional amendment to overturn the Electoral College and ensure that the winner of the popular vote wins the election.
