First Curator's Apprentice Andy Bello focuses on the Chinese Elm, a deciduous tree species native to China, Korea and Japan, in the next installation of his Species Spotlight blog! The species earned the nickname "Lacebark Elm" because of the peculiar pattern created as parts of the tree's bark flake off with age.

Preserve Peace

Dear Jon,

Though I have studied bonsai for more than 30 years, I find there is always so much more to learn from our trees. Shaped by decades and even centuries of change, each bonsai has a story to tell. Some even have a special place in history.

Such is the Yamaki Pine at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. At nearly 400 years old, it greets visitors as they enter the Japanese Pavilion. If you don't know it yet, the story really is remarkable.

This Japanese white pine (Pinus parvifolia) was donated by bonsai master Masaru Yamaki as part of Japan's bicentennial gift in 1976. But little was known about its history until 2001, when his grandsons visited the Museum and revealed the tree's hidden past.

On August 6, 1945, this tree was in Yamaki's outdoor garden in Hiroshima, a mere two miles from where the atomic bomb was dropped. Miraculously, none of the Yamaki family members or their bonsai were seriously harmed by the blast.

Years later, this tree was Yamaki's gift to the American people, part of the larger gift that founded the Museum at the U.S. National Arboretum. It is a true symbol of peace, beauty, and resilience. I invite you to learn more about the world-famous Yamaki Pine and our other treasures online.

The National Bonsai Foundation (NBF) remains the sole nonprofit organization supporting the Museum and its distinctive collections. We're driven by our passion for bonsai and want to ensure that thousands more visitors can experience these small but mighty trees.

Bonsai can offer such hope amid tumultuous times. That's a legacy worth preserving.

Virtual World Bonsai Day Reaches Thousands

Last weekend we honored World Bonsai Day, an international day of celebration of peace and friendship through bonsai. Origami professional Jeff Raab led NBF''s first-ever origami class in January, ultimately teaching participants to fold the quintessential paper crane. He prompted attendants to contribute to the National Symphony Orchestra's effort to bring 1,000 paper cranes to the Children's Peace Monument in Japan. Kennedy Center leader Andrew Brown wrote a thank-you note to those who participated.
