Editor's Note: Even though this email was originally written for coaches, I think it's equally important for parents to understand, so you can find the best coach for your child!

As a coach at any level, it's easy to feel the pressure to win now.

Winning is fun and inspiring and it keeps your players engaged.

But in the effort to win now, many coaches make a serious practice mistake that can not only hold their teams back in the short-term but also limit their players for years to come.

Now, at times, this practice mistake CAN lead to wins.

But make no mistake, it's Fool's Gold at its finest.

I'm talking about overlooking (or completely eliminating) individual skill development in practices.

Some coaches choose to focus on strategies and tactics instead.

Things like teaching plays, multiple defenses, multiple offenses, etc.

But the problem is these things have no impact on the long term development of the team or the players!

In fact, if this happens year after year... not only does the team lose more games, but it''s also possibly costing your players a chance at college scholarships or success at higher levels.

As a rule of thumb, you should spend AT LEAST 1/3 of your practice on skill development.

The late Hall of Fame coach Don Meyer who once led the NCAA in total wins (923) said.

"When it comes time for the playoffs, which would you rather have, two better players, or two new plays? I would rather have two better players."

From personal experience, focusing on skill development yields major results quickly- by the second half of the season!

Simple Math Shows Why This Is Vital!

Let''s say you have 30 practices that are 90 minutes each. At each practice, you spend 30 minutes on skill development.

Over the course of just one season, that''s 900 minutes of skill development! You can make a big impact over just one season!

All things being equal, who is going to be the better team?

The team who spent this time memorizing plays or the team who became better at shooting, ball handling, passing, footwork, and attacking the defense?

Then let''s do that over the course of 9 seasons, that''s 8,100 minutes of skill development!

You can make a tremendous impact over multiple seasons!

But it doesn't end there..

How to Turn 8,100 Minutes of Skill Development into 810,000 Minutes

And to top it off... you motivate players to practice outside of practice.

1 - You show them drills to do. So they know what to work on outside of practice. Not every kid will do this, but some will.

2 - When they see themselves getting better at their basketball skills, they want to practice more outside of practice. It''s fun seeing yourself improve! So those 8,100 minutes could easily turn into 810,000 minutes! That''s where you get unbelievable results.

Coaching your players on skill development is truly one of the most powerful things you can do for your team and for each individual player.

So as you map out your practice plans for this season, remember to stick to the 1/3 rule where at least 33% of your practice time is spent in this department.

In the past, we've had a camp sell out in one day, so be sure to look at our camp schedule ahead of time if you're interested.

You can also pre-register. That way, you get an email the morning of Tuesday, January 5th (before anybody else) with a payment link and instructions.

Just a reminder, only payment secures a spot. Registration does not secure a spot.

Of course, not all of our camps sell out in one day, but a lot of our camps do sell out. More than a hundred camps sell out each year.
