Seasons Greetings from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West

Happy Holidays to Everyone,
With days growing shorter and the weather growing colder, it's easy to fall into a late season funk. My dear mother always hated this time of year not just because of the annual changes but also the overt commercialization of the Christmas holiday. For those of us who grew up with A Charlie Brown Christmas, we forever have the image of Snoopy over-decorating to win the prize—proof enough of some folks' passion for excessive exuberance!
And yet, this past weekend, I saw more than 3,000 people in the museum for our annual Holiday Open House. In a town of 10,000, this is a pretty amazing number! While every museum I've worked for over the years has a big holiday event, none ever impacted such a high percentage of the local community as does the event here at your museum. Part of the joy of this event is the hard work our staff and volunteers put into it. From baking thousands of cookies, to dressing up in costume and hanging out with the kids, it's an amazing commitment by those who strive to make this holiday special for folks in Cody and Park County.
So as much as it is the coldest and darkest time of the year, and as much as some forget the spirit of Christmas, I truly applaud the staff and volunteers here for bringing light, warmth, and caring to so many people.
