Luz Marina Trujillo grew up in a family of coffee producers and talks happily about spending her childhood playing with coffee beans instead of dolls. Now, she produces one of the finest coffees available on her estate Santa Elena in the highlands of Costa Rica's most famous coffee-growing region, Tarraz?. Luz Marina's coffee is grown under shade, and the perfectly ripe cherries are hand-picked and sorted for quality at her own mill. Luz Marina was one of the first estate owners in Costa Rica to produce Pulped Natural "Honey" (Miel) coffee in volume, adding a dimension of sweetness to the sophisticated flavor profile.

Through Woodland Park Zoo''s TKCP's YUS Conservation Coffee initiative, farmers sold nearly 25,000 kgs of coffee during the last harvest season! Since the first export of YUS Conservation Coffee in 2011, more than 145,000 kgs have been sold, generating income for YUS farmers and their families. 

Caffe Vita has been working directly with the farmers of YUS and members of TKCP to improve quality and bring this amazing coffee to market.  The land of YUS is ideally suited for cultivation with its altitude, rich organic soil, heirloom varietals, and tropical climate.  The challenge has been to refine processing methods, create better drying conditions, and ultimately find a way to transport the coffee from the isolated mountains of YUS to our roasting facility in Seattle, Washington.
