"Carefully treads the water between being a magazine for people who want to read great literature and for writers—and elegantly swims in the middle as one for both."
—NewPages Review, Summer 2016 issue
Liam, now that you've joined our community, we have a confession: We're not like other lit mags! We love great literature but we also love the process that goes into creating it, too.
That's why every quarterly issue features our signature HONEST FICTION paired with What We Talk About — a conversation with each author to discuss their craft and the influences that shaped their story.
There's much more to discover, so we invite you to take a tour of magazine features on our website, order back issues in print or digital, or browse our free archive of online short stories.

"Winning the contest inspired me...it was the first time I received money for anything I’d written. I could consider myself a real writer."
—Leesa Cross-Smith, author of Every Kiss a War and Whiskey & Ribbons
Liam, if you haven't already, you're invited to submit your work to us. We're always on the lookout for unknown writers and emerging voices to publish — like Leesa Cross-Smith, our Editor's Choice Award winner in the 2011 Raymond Carver Short Story Contest.
Before the contest, Leesa rarely shared her work and didn't consider herself a "real" writer. Placing in the contest changed all of that, and now she's the author of four books and the founding editor of WhiskeyPaper — a literary magazine. That's the kind of community-building and literary citizenship we love to inspire.
Check out our submission guidelines for year-round fiction, poetry, and nonfiction submissions and our two annual contests: the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest in the spring and the Prose & Poetry Contest in the fall.

LEARN, WRITE, CONNECT.
"Their interest in the development of writers, coupled with the excellent work contained in its pages, makes CARVE a worthy tribute to its namesake."
—NewPages Review, Fall 2017 issue
Liam, it wasn't enough for us just to publish a magazine with great literature and conversations about writing. We wanted to do more for writers to help them improve their work and get published, and that's why we created the Carve Classroom: a place to learn, get feedback, and connect with others in our community.
Hundreds of writer have taken our self-study short story writing classes, one-on-one short story editing workshop, or received our affordable critiques to improve their skills and knowledge of craft. Many have since gone on to win awards and get published in lit mags, and thousands have read and commented on our viral Tips for Writers blog posts about writing and the writer's life.
If you're a teacher or educator, CARVE can be a valuable tool to introduce students to contemporary literature and interact with the authors. Download our FREE comprehensive lesson plans or order back issues in bulk at a generous discount to help inspire a new generation of writers.
