Currently, more than 3.6 million middle and high school students in the United States use e-cigarettes according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The use of e-cigarettes among youth has increased significantly since the introduction of the product to the U.S. market in 2007. In response to the e-cigarette epidemic, the CDC Foundation received a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to monitor and evaluate e-cigarette use by collecting data on use, access, sales, attitudes and behaviors among teens and young adults. Today is World Rabies Day, a global health observance started in 2007 to raise awareness about rabies and bring together partners to enhance prevention and control efforts worldwide. While rabies is a preventable disease, more than 59,000 people die from the disease around the world each year. Rabies virus affects the brain, causing victims to develop aggression, irrational fears, confusion and anxiety; it almost always results in death.

Save and Improve Lives

Rabies is vaccine-preventable, with vaccines available for dogs and humans. It has been proven that vaccination of more than 70 percent of the dog population for three to five consecutive years can eliminate rabies from the dog population in a community, region or country, protecting both animals and people from the spread of this devastating disease.

The CDC Foundation supports more than 300 CDC-led programs, including a program aimed to eliminate dog-mediated rabies in Haiti through prevention, education, surveillance and mass dog-vaccination campaigns. Diseases like rabies spread quickly, but with your help the CDC Foundation can accelerate CDC’s lifesaving mission.

To help strengthen the quality of birth and death registrations throughout the world, Bloomberg Philanthropies, along with partners including the CDC Foundation, are expanding the innovative Data for Health initiative.

Data for Health, which launched in 2015, partners with governments in low- and middle-income countries to strengthen the availability of public health data and improve how they use information to make policy decisions that can improve and save lives. Data for Health is expanding from 20 to 25 countries, ultimately reaching 1.5 billion people.

It’s been five years since the West Africa Ebola epidemic in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone resulted in 28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths. Now the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing the world’s second-largest Ebola epidemic in history. More than 2,100 lives have been lost since the outbreak was declared in August 2018, and the risk of spread to neighboring countries is high.

The World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern in July 2019—a rare designation used only for the most dangerous epidemics. While progress has been made, without more urgent action the outbreak will continue to burn and pose health, security and economic risks to the world.

Fight This Ebola Epidemic With Us

The CDC Foundation and CDC need your support to deploy additional expert field staff to the frontline and provide resources to contain the virus and fight cross-border spread.

Ebola is one of the most deadly infectious diseases, causing death in approximately 50 percent of people who become infected. We need your help now to help CDC expand response efforts to this Ebola outbreak and strengthen preparedness to fight the next one.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing the world’s second largest Ebola outbreak in history with 3,250 cases and more than 2,100 deaths. World Antibiotic Awareness Week, which is commemorated each November, aims to increase awareness of antibiotic resistance and to encourage best practices across the globe.

Antibiotics save lives, but overuse can lead to antibiotic resistance. In doctors’ offices and emergency departments in the United States alone, at least 47 million antibiotic prescriptions each year are prescribed unnecessarily. In addition, antibiotic resistance is one of the most serious public health problems facing the United States, threatening to return us to the time when simple infections were often fatal.

Help Improve Patient Safety

The CDC Foundation supports the work of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in their dedicated efforts to improve the use of antibiotics, including ensuring access when medically needed.

In our work, we are combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a unique public health challenge. We are working to make meaningful progress across the spectrum of AMR: from improving antibiotic use to investing in innovative new ways to prevent and treat infections. Data is essential to tackling any outbreak, but behind all the numbers there are real people suffering and dying from a horrible disease.

Despite fresh knowledge and new medical advances since the last major Ebola outbreak in 2014, there is still much work to do to protect the health of people affected right now in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and surrounding countries.

Give Today to Ebola Response Efforts

To stop the epidemic, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) needs support through the CDC Foundation to deploy additional field staff with expertise in epidemiology, infection prevention and control, vaccines, logistics, and management and operations. In addition, funds are needed to support internet connectivity services and hardware. Response efforts will also require lab equipment, field supplies and transportation.

Will you help the CDC Foundation respond to this global health emergency?

During the 2014–2016 outbreak, the CDC Foundation—through generous support from our partners and individuals like you—provided vital resources including personal protective equipment, thermal scanning thermometers, health worker training, vehicles, and emergency operations centers in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, all in support of CDC’s prevention, detection and containment efforts. Recovery efforts remain effective five years later.

My mother was a force of nature when the odds were against her. She had many health challenges during her lifetime, but she beat the odds and lived to over 97 years. She was in a car accident at 12, had a ruptured appendix at 20 and contracted polio at 28. But throughout the years I marveled at her ability to overcome illness and injury.

Tomorrow, December 3, is #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving back—a day that encourages us all to do more good in the world. During this giving season, I reflect back on my mom’s spirit that never faltered, as well as those who have inspired me.

As a personal example, my mother was a force of nature who defied all odds, despite facing many health challenges, including polio. Her life was a tribute not only to her tenacity and resilience in the face of these challenges, but also to major advances in science, medicine and public health.

According to a CDC report, deaths by suicide are at the highest rate in decades with more than 6,000 veteran suicides each year from 2008–2016. The World Heath Organization (WHO) has just declared the coronavirus outbreak to be a public health emergency of international concern, as the number of people infected in China has now surpassed those infected with SARS during the 2002–2003 epidemic. The death toll has risen to 170 in China, with more than 7,800 confirmed cases of infection as of Thursday afternoon. More than 80 cases have been recorded outside of China, and 18 countries have reported confirmed cases.

As infections grow, we need your support in mobilizing to quickly assist the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as they take aggressive public health measures to help stop the spread of the virus.

GLOBAL HEALTH SECURITY

More than 70 percent of the world remains underprepared to prevent, detect and respond to a public health emergency. Disease knows no boundaries. A pathogen can travel from a remote village to major cities around the world in as little as 36 hours.

As part of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), the CDC Foundation works with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to strengthen public health systems and contain outbreaks at the source, before they spread into regional epidemics or global pandemics.

EBOLA

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing the world’s second largest Ebola epidemic in history with more than 3,300 cases and more than 2,100 deaths.

We are working to beat back Ebola, through on-the-ground support for contract tracing, vaccination and surveillance in DRC. Your help enables us to bring an end to the outbreak and begin shoring up health system capacities to prevent or respond to another outbreak.

DATA MODERNIZATION

A modernized public health data system is critical to CDC's ability to detect, prevent and respond to health threats. The CDC Foundation is working to extend government investment with philanthropic sector support to ensure our nation's health through more robust and rapid information flows, making sure data and data systems are timely, active and predictive to keep us safe from the next health threat.

Today, we are excited to launch the Healthy Futures Society, comprised of individuals who have decided to leave a gift in their will or estate plans to the CDC Foundation. Healthy Futures Society members choose to make a gift to help others live safer, longer, healthier lives by leveraging the expertise and dedication of CDC’s world-class scientists.

Recently, my husband and I made the decision to include the CDC Foundation in our estate plan. Now that our children are grown, we wanted to find a way to support our life’s work and our passion for promoting the health and wellbeing of all people. We could think of no better way to do so than through the CDC Foundation, whose positive impact we see firsthand each day.

It brings us great joy to know we will make a difference in others’ lives even after we are gone. If you, too, have a passion for public health, I hope you will join me by becoming an inaugural member of the Healthy Futures Society this year. As we celebrate the CDC Foundation’s 25th anniversary in 2020, we have an ambitious goal to reach 25 members by the end of this year.

A Health Threat Anywhere is a Health Threat Everywhere

In recent weeks, a novel coronavirus was detected in Wuhan City, China, and the virus has spread to a growing number of countries, including the United States. To protect the health of Americans and other countries, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been taking aggressive public health measures. Additionally, CDC requested that the CDC Foundation activate our Emergency Response Fund to provide support to address rapidly emerging response needs.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) stepped forward with a catalytic donation of $1 million. Over the years, RWJF has provided incredible support in many CDC Foundation response efforts, ranging from the Haiti earthquake to the West Africa Ebola outbreak to support for responses to hurricanes in U.S. territories.

Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and this year's official theme is "We're in this together." It's a reminder of the importance of social support—from friends, family, colleagues and partners—when addressing HIV in the black community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV today.

In recent weeks, a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was detected in Wuhan City, China, and the virus has spread to a growing number of countries, including the United States.

According to the World Health Organization, as of January 26, more than 2,000 cases of 2019-nCoV have been confirmed globally, with 1,985 cases in China and 29 cases in more than 10 countries outside of China. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced five confirmed cases in the United States and anticipates more confirmed cases, including some spread from person-to-person.

Please help us stem the spread of this infectious disease before it’s too late.

CDC is taking aggressive public health measures to help protect the health of Americans, including requesting that the CDC Foundation activate its Emergency Response Fund to provide support to rapidly emerging response needs. We need your help.

Funds raised by the CDC Foundation through its Emergency Response Fund will be used to meet fast-emerging needs identified by CDC. These include:

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month. Not all birth defects can be prevented, but mothers can increase their chances of having a healthy baby by managing health conditions and by adopting healthy behaviors before and during pregnancy.

The CDC Foundation supports the work of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our partners to prevent birth defects and maternal deaths. The Taking Action to Study Babies with Zika in the United States program, for example, supports studying the impacts of Zika virus on mothers and babies in the United States and its territories—the largest cohort of Zika-affected pregnancies in the world. In this critical study, CDC is at the forefront of answering key questions about Zika, monitoring more than 7,300 pregnancies in the United States and territories and connecting children to care when needed.

Please support the CDC Foundation and help us continue to learn more about Zika, so that we can help those children and families who are suffering from congenital Zika as well as protect future generations.

The CDC Foundation is uniquely positioned to mobilize resources quickly to protect people from COVID-19, a new coronavirus with confirmed cases in more than 30 countries. And with your support, we can meet current and future demands—like increased diagnostic capacity to test individuals for coronavirus.

When we started our COVID-19 response work just over three weeks ago, we knew our colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and in state and local health departments would need assistance to meet the extra demands on them.

To date, with the help of donors like you, our team has worked with CDC to support needs in 11 state public health laboratories—including support for new testing equipment to more rapidly process the volume of test samples as well as providing overtime for public health workers.

What we didn't anticipate, however, were some of the other gaps that would arise, such as aid for individuals in quarantine. So working closely with CDC, we have been identifying and addressing these emerging new issues, and then working to provide immediate assistance where most needed.

The COVID-19 coronavirus response continues to evolve, and through the generous support of you, our donors and partners, we are helping extend the lifesaving work of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To date, the CDC Foundation team has mobilized approximately $1.7 million and is working closely with our colleagues at CDC to discover gaps where government support is not available or available in time to meet needs. And those needs are rising along with the spread of COVID-19, which has now infected more than 76,000 people in 30 countries, primarily in China.

Answering the Call to Serve During COVID-19

Kadeshia Earl spends hours with her colleagues, Dr. Xi Pan and Laura Duarte, in a lab with samples of a deadly virus. It’s tedious work—safety and efficiency are paramount. Precision is critical. Each sample needs to be processed, cleaned, batched, extracted for RNA and tested for the presence of COVID-19. Through their laboratory work, patients will find out if they are negative or positive for the virus.

These three microbiologists at the Houston Health Department are a few examples of people with diverse backgrounds and experience joining the CDC Foundation COVID-19 Corps in communities across the country. Microbiologists, contact tracers, epidemiologists, data analysts and many other public health staff are working together to make an impact.

Kadeshia, Xi and Laura knew taking these jobs would mean long hours and tedious, high-stakes work, but they all answered the call to use their experience to serve their community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Serving the Underserved

Though COVID-19 has impacted communities around the world, it has not affected all communities equally. Latinx residents make up only 9 percent of Virginia’s population, but they represent more than 30 percent of all known COVID-19 cases.

The CDC Foundation and its donors are supporting the local communities in the Richmond and Chesterfield health districts with a grant to help expand resources and support for the Latinx population to help limit the spread. Health officials are currently expanding testing access, using contact tracing, helping to ensure residents have resources to safely recover in isolation and providing communities with masks to help limit the spread.

Inspired to Give

When 8-year-old Alani Thorns’ birthday plans were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, she decided to create art to help raise money to fight the virus.

Staff members who worked for a software company, Fast Enterprises, came together to form a virtual team to raise funds.

Lauren Meier and her fiancée Parker Toms had to cancel some of their wedding events. They asked friends and family to support the CDC Foundation’s emergency response fund for coronavirus instead of celebrating with gifts or events.

Protecting Us All

At the CDC Foundation we are honored to work alongside many people throughout the world who are working to protect us from COVID-19 and other health threats.

Maureen Hazen, a former nurse, is now working as a contact tracer in Arizona. Dr. Stephanie Gaw is studying the effects of COVID-19 on pregnant women in California. Chief Harold Scoggins is overseeing his team of first responders in Washington State. Fernando Rodriguez is creating strategies to help reach the Latinx population in Virginia. Dr. Paul Jarris led the development of an automated contact tracing system at the beginning of the pandemic that is being used in communities across the country.

How One Nursing Student is Making a Difference

Aaliyah Ismail was excited for her future as she began her last year of nursing school at the University of Washington, but as graduation grew closer something very unexpected happened—a pandemic.

As a student who was working as a nursing tech in trauma for the past year, infectious disease was not her field. But that all changed rapidly. When Seattle emerged as the first coronavirus hotspot in early March, it was clear the city would need additional support and medical expertise.

Through CDC Foundation funding to the University of Washington School of Nursing, Aaliyah joined a school cohort supporting the COVID-19 response by answering calls coming into the Public Health Seattle-King County Department Call Center. Today she is learning so much more than she ever expected.

“I feel grateful to be part of the healthcare force that is making a difference and helping people who truly are in need.”

TikTok Donates $15 Million

TikTok gave a $15 million contribution to support our COVID-19 response to increase surge staffing for frontline public health staff. Through this support from its Health Heroes Relief Fund, we are hiring hundreds of staff who can work with state and local governments in hard-hit outbreak centers.

Today is the day we CRUSH COVID! Today is #GivingTuesday, and we invite you to join this global generosity movement by supporting the CDC Foundation.

Help Us CRUSH COVID

The formation of the COVID-19 Corps is just one example of how the CDC Foundation is working hard to CRUSH COVID. These health workers came on board as part of an emergency effort to help fill critical staffing gaps during the pandemic.

One group within the CDC Foundation COVID-19 Corps has become known in Pennsylvania public-health circles as “The Super Tracers.” This tight-knit team of 10 didn’t know each other before they became part of the CDC Foundation’s initiative to assist health departments staff up. But as the first paid contact tracers hired for the COVID-19 response in the state, they encountered process issues that brought them together to develop solutions they could implement and pass along to an appreciative Pennsylvania Department of Health, and quickly earned their new nickname.

Team member Holly Charest has a theory about their group’s success: “Our willingness to share information with each other is what makes us cohesive and makes us stand out. We just connect, we just all connect, and I think it''s wonderful.”

This group of CDC Foundation contact tracers has served as the pioneer team for the Pennsylvania Department of Health's expanded contact tracing infrastructure. They continue to serve as leaders among their team of over 1,300 tracers.

The COVID-19 Corps is just one way the CDC Foundation is crushing COVID. Your gift today will help battle COVID-19 and fuel the CDC Foundation’s hundreds of programs in the United States and around the world to CRUSH COVID.
