Here at Essex County Council, we are delighted to be the event partner for Community Care Live 2019 and the opportunity to share with the social work community the commitment Essex gives to develop and support our social care staff and help them to make a difference in residents’ lives.
Being one of the most populated counties in the UK, with communities as diverse as its geography, Essex could expand your practice horizons, whether you are looking for a role in adult social care or children and families.
We look forward to having engaging conversations with you and showcasing more about our approach to practice in the two masterclass sessions we are hosting:
Tuesday 15 October:
Fostering for the Next Generation
With care demand set to rise significantly in the next decade and the number of foster households falling, Essex County Council is reinventing its approach to retaining, recruiting and supporting foster carers. In this masterclass, you’ll hear how Essex is meeting the fostering challenge, including:
How therapeutic fostering, systemic, trauma-informed and relationship-based practice improved Essex’s in-house fostering service
The power of the ‘Bear in Care’ recruitment and retention campaign
The use of Oasis Networks to connect foster families with wider networks
The benefits of Essex’s BASW-accredited training
Wednesday 16 October:
Meaningful Lives Matter - a strengths based and person-centred transformation for people with a learning disability and/or autism
This exciting and interactive session will showcase our emerging 3-year transformation programme “Meaningful Lives Matter”. Come with us on our journey to learn about some of the early and innovative outcomes for adults within Essex and how we are working across a whole life pathway for residents with Learning Disability and/or Autism to co-produce better lives. We want you to gain greater understanding of how Adult Social Care in Essex is transforming front-line social care practice using a strengths-based and person-centred approach.
What do you think you can achieve in a 100 days challenge? Come and find out what Pizazz Pioneers, Smashing Barriers, Island Community Challengers achieved being the first in the country to be led by people with a learning disability and/ or autism.
If you don’t get an opportunity to attend either of these sessions, please see our Essex County Council staff who will be happy to answer any questions you may have about working in Essex.
If you are considering Essex County Council for your next career move, come and see us on stand 19/20 and online at www.workingforessex.com

Community Care Live going virtual this year is a?new experience for all of us. The team here have?been working hard to ensure we bring you all the features you expect from the in-person?event, and we''ve even thrown in some fun extras!?
So, what''s new?
Well, the whole event is now brought to you online. So, with no travel constraints, more of you can join us, no matter where you''re based (and you can even enjoy the event from the comfort of your sofa in your PJs if you like!)
Four yoga sessions will be led by Essex principal social worker, and yoga instructor, Paul McGee. These seated sessions will take place in between programme seminars, to help you relax and look after your physical and mental wellbeing.
??????
Harry Venning of Clare in the Community fame will be narrating a selection of the sessions over the two-day event with his inspirational and humorous cartoons. Harry joins us courtesy of our event partner, Essex County Council.
We have a virtual networking lounge. Not only can this be used to chat to colleagues, but after sessions, if the speaker is available, they may visit one of the chat rooms to enable you to continue conversations begun in the seminar.
And what''s the same (but just a little different)?
You can still access over 40 sessions of essential learning to help boost your CPD
You can still get specialist legal updates to help improve your court skills and case law knowledge
You can still hear how other organisations in the sector are overcoming key challenges and take away examples of best practice
??????
You can still network and chat with colleagues, peers and thought leaders in our networking lounges (you''ll just need to make your own cuppa this year!)
You can still engage with our exhibitors. In between sessions come along to the expo hall. Our exhibitors are eager to say hello and answer any questions you have. There will also be plenty of information and handouts to take away with you, and maybe even the odd prize draw....

Join us, no matter where you are
This year, while we are disappointed not to be able to welcome the social work community in person, we are thrilled to still be able to deliver all of Community Care Live''s valuable content and networking opportunities straight to you, no matter where you are based.
Those of you who have been unable to attend previous Live events due to travel, time or budget constraints, don''t need to miss out this year. With sessions and exhibitors at the click of a button, you can drop in and out of the event as much as your schedule allows.
What can you expect from the Virtual event?
Free seminar programme
Two full days of free seminars, covering children, adult and management topics. These will continue to be on a first come first served basis on the day - but we have higher maximum capacities for each session than our face-to-face events. Most of our sessions will still offer a question and answer segment using an online chat function.
Easy access, wherever you are
We would love to have as much interaction over the event to take advantage of those organic conversations and networking opportunities, but we understand that taking two full days out of your working week is not always feasible. With no travel logistics and costs, you are free to log into and out of the event as much or as little as you can, from wherever you are based.
Legal Learning Sessions
We will continue to offer the latest legislation updates in 8 legal learning sessions, covering themes such as Brexit, Covid-19, the Care Act and Deprivation of Liberty. Book your places in these sessions by 11th September to take advantage of reduced rates.
Networking
Our sponsors and exhibitors will all be available to chat with you in their individual virtual booths so you can still have the conversations you would normally enjoy on our buzzing exhibition floor. There will also be a number of Networking Lounges available, to meet with your peers, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors.

Race in the mental health system
In 2017-2018, black men were four times more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act than their white counterparts. And the risk of psychosis in the black Caribbean population is estimated to be nearly seven times higher than in the white population. These inequalities may be the result of many connected factors, including racism, economic inequality, poverty, and mental health stigma, and should be of concern to any social worker working in the mental health system.
In this session, Professor Frank Keating, from Royal Holloway University, will cover:
The inequalities that exist for black, Asian and minority ethnic people accessing the mental health system - particularly black African and Caribbean men.
The disproportionate detentions of African and Caribbean men under the Mental Health Act.
The lessons for social workers and approved mental health professionals (AMHPs) from research with African and Caribbean men, and how these can be applied to social work practice.
Other sessions focusing on Adult topics include:
Exploitation does not stop at 18: safeguarding young people in transition
Trauma-informed approaches to working with adults
Tackling common challenges in working within the Mental Capacity Act
Supporting adults with learning disabilities to have intimate relationships

A Message from our Event Partner
Dear Ryan
Essex County Council is proud to be the ongoing event partner with Community Care Live and we are delighted that new technology has enabled us to evolve and develop this event, to be delivered virtually this year. We hope that you will enjoy this new, innovative and exciting learning experience as we continue to adapt to the challenges in these unprecedented times.
We know that social work is a demanding, complex but fulfilling role, and recognise the importance of equipping you with the tools to build meaningful relationships and make lasting changes to our vulnerable adults, children and families.
We'll support you to be your best, with the resources, training and development to empower you.
We'll enable you to make the most of everything outside work too, with flexible working options and other lifestyle benefits.
To find out more about our approach to practice, join us at Community Care Virtually Live in the new virtual Essex Theatre to take part in the following masterclasses:
Adult Social Care:
Foundations of Practice
How do we ensure that core practice is excellent? The journey Adult Social Care has been on and the investment made in an innovating, engaging and reflective programme for all front line staff and a large and complex authorities. The key theme: keeping your core foundations solid in uncertain times.
Ethical Decision Making
We keep the adult at the heart of everything we do, but how do we ensure that the decisions we make are ethically sound?
Children & Families Social Care:
''Would you stick it on the fridge?'' Children In Need (CIN) Planning to louden the voices of families in CIN
Outlining how we took a practitioner led solution focused approach to re-inventing our practice with CIN.
Meaningful Life for All - Linking Social Care, Education & Employment
In this session we will explore how we have developed "meaningful" pathways of support towards employment for Children and Young People with disabilities.
To get a real feel of what we are about in Essex before October, we invite you to join our virtual recruitment event on Thursday 13th August 2020. If you're a qualified social worker with at least one year's experience and are registered with Social Work England, this event could be the start of a refreshing new chapter in your adult or children's social work career.
During this 3-hour event, you'll find out what it's like to be a social worker in Essex. And, hearing from members of our leadership team, you'll discover the various ways we care for our social workers too - including our innovative new strategy to ensure the wellbeing of our social care teams.
We'll give you an insight into the Essex Social Care Academy (ESCA) and our CPD offering. You'll also benefit from wellbeing and desk yoga sessions.
Finally, with a live Q&A, it's over to you, where our teams will aim to answer any questions you might have about being part of the Essex Social Care family.

Learn how to best support families experiencing child and adolescent to parent violence and abuse
Children behaving abusively to their parents can often be a hidden problem because of shame and fear of stigma. The increased tensions on families during coronavirus - home-schooling; the intensity and isolation of lockdown; financial pressures; fear and uncertainty - and increases in all forms of domestic abuse have led to more people speaking out about child to parent violence. In this session Helen Bonnick, a social worker and trainer will discuss:
What child to parent violence is and how to distinguish between normal behaviour concerns and abuse
The differences and similarities between responding to child and adolescent to parent abuse, and to other safeguarding concerns
What good social work practice looks like in different scenarios
Other sessions focusing on Children topics include:???????
Understanding trauma - why children behave the way they do
Good practice in life story work
Complex safeguarding: an approach to addressing extra-familial harm, exploitation and risks facing young people
Assessing parental capacity versus the impact of poverty and inequality
