Hello Friends,
Greetings from the Cascades! CoolWorks is on the road this week in Skamania, WA hosting 40 representatives from a wide variety of seasonal employers in Great Places at our 31st annual Seasonal Human Resource Association conference. Every year, we host this conference with the hopes of bringing together some of the folks that are responsible for making their properties better places to live and work. Just by taking the time to be here and learn from each other and our presenters, they’re making big moves to implement changes and make their properties better places in the world of seasonal work.
Equally exciting to their commitment to learn and grow are their stories. Most of the folks in this room of Human Resources Managers and Generalists, Recruiters, Recruitment Marketing Specialists, Food and Beverage Directors, etc., are former housekeepers, retail clerks, front desk agents, line cooks, bellman, ski lift operators, and marina attendants. The world of tourism, travel, and hospitality is full of stories of seasonal dishwashers becoming General Managers, and most of these stories have a common thread - they find a place, they come to love that place, they pour their heart and soul into staying at that place and making it better.
So I’m excited to think about all of you, the future HR Managers, Directors of Operations, GM’s, and F&B Directors who have yet to start, or are somewhere along your journey. You have no idea where the road is going to take you. You might become a seasoned seasonal who builds up a skill set that takes you all over the world to a new place every year. You might spend one summer in a National Park, head back to college and on to a career in the big city somewhere. Or you might take a job as a housekeeper, fall in love with a place, pour your skills and passion into that place, and in a few years, find yourself at a conference with your peers, learning how to make your place even better for the next generation of bright-eyed housekeepers.
