"I didn’t want to have to deal with producers," said Country Music Hall of Fame member Bobby Bare. "In the early 1970s, I told Chet Atkins, ‘You’ve got way too many producers at RCA, and it’s real confusing.’ He said, ‘Why don’t you produce your own records?’ I didn’t have to arm-wrestle him about it. I said, ‘Great,’ and jumped in real quick. I did ‘Ride Me Down Easy,’ which Billy Joe Shaver wrote, and then instantly started working with Shel Silverstein, when everybody’s heads were turned."
—Bobby Bare, from the exhibit catalog Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ’70s
