Component Libraries with Fractal (and Twig)

In this course we’re going to build a component library using Fractal and Twig for the Crafty Coffee website. If you’ve been hanging out at CraftQuest for a while then you probably know the site pretty well.

Small Pieces, Loosely Joined

This week we're kicking off a new course on building component libraries. This technical course uses the Fractal tool and Twig. The nice thing about this approach is that you should be able to get a lot of reusable decisions and work when you move to implementing a design system in Craft.

A component library is a way to move the thinking of how we break up whole templates into smaller, reusable chunks. We do that anyway when we do implementation in Craft.

The course will cover how to use Fractal with Twig to build a component library for the CraftQuest sample site Crafty Coffee.

GIT CRIT
Last week's CraftQuest on Call livestream went epically long but we covered a lot of interesting, helpful topics. One of the key segments was Andrew walking through his Git workflow for making changes to the devMode.fm website.

The segment was so long (about an hour) that I broke it out into its own livestream video. I'm cheekily calling it Git Crit because I challenged some of Andrew's workflow decisions. It was fun!

The CraftQuest on Call livestream takes place every other Thursday at 8 PM EDT with me and Andrew Welch (SEOmatic developer). We ponder the latest in web development, answer questions, and sometimes even do some coding working on the CraftQuest site. It's live right on CraftQuest.

We've Live on the Air

There are have been a steady stream of livestreams on CraftQuest the last few months and you'll see a lot more coming in the near future. In addition to the bi-weekly livestream CraftQuest on Call with Andrew Welch, I did a "first look" livestream on the Formie plugin. In a spur of the moment decision I added in Formie developer Josh Crawford from his home in Australia to talk about the plugin.

The livestreams are a fun way to have a more interactive learning experience. I hope you'll tune into one in the future!

I do a lot of Craft development work right here on CraftQuest. And, for the most part, I haven't documented much of it. But that seems like a lost learning opportunity.

Starting today I'm documenting our work on the new Team Plans feature of CraftQuest. I'm working together with Ben Croker from Put Your Lights On (developer of Sprig, Blitz, and Campaign plugins).

My nature is to never talk about or show something until it's complete. But, upon reflection. that's antithetical to a learning evironment like CraftQuest. So, all cards on the table; let's learn together while building something new for CraftQuest.

Matt built Servd on Kubernetes and a side-effect of that is that every time you deploy a change to your site, the file system is completely rebuilt. The Cake Beneath the Icing

Today I added a brand new lesson on iTerm2, an alternative macOS terminal emulator. iTerm2 is a standard application on all of my computers and I find it easier and more helpful than the default Terminal application. Check out the lesson!

One thing I've been focusing on lately–both for my own learning and for what I teach here at CraftQuest–is looking at how things work beyond the top layer. This doesn't always mean knowing the internals of a piece of software or library but it can mean knowing why something works the way it does.

On CraftQuest I have a series of courses and lessons on Git version control. It's one of my favorite topics to covers because I'm endlessly fascinated with Git as a system.

One of the most interesting courses is Git: Under the Hood. This course is where I unpack some of the inner workings of Git, separating the "porcelain" from the "plumbing" to help understand not just how Git works but why it works the way it does.

Rather than just plugging and playing, let's make an effort to dig in a little more and understand the why a bit more. It'll make solving problems easier and our final implementations of features or code much cleaner and durable.

7 NEW VIDEOS JUST ADDED

From the Desk of the Voice Behind the Videos

I added 7 new videos to the Component Libraries with Fractal (and Twig) course this week. Some of them were meant for last week but some bad RAM in my production iMac prevented me from producing the videos on the schedule I had planned.

I've certainly learned over the last 6-8 months that not everything is going to go as planned. You, too? I've learned how to balance so many things out of my control while also maintaining those slightly more in my control.

As I've progressed through my career I've see a lot of stuff and can, generally, roll with the punches when a project goes south, a piece of hardware gets mad and rage quits at the worst possible time, or a problem seems too impossible to solve.

But 2020?

As I shared with my daughter several times throughout the pandemic, none of the adults have experienced this before. It's new to us, too. And we're just trying to do our best navigating it all. The last pandemic like this was 102 years ago. Very few people are still alive from then. We, non-scientist adults, have no collective knowledge of how to fix this. Yes, I know you want to go back to school. I do, too.

Learning can be refuge. It's an escape from the now to the what-could-be, as we take in new information, stimulate our brains and build new neural pathways. It's an exciting and pleasing activity.

During this pandemic, creating videos for CraftQuest has been a refuge for me. My bi-weekly livestreams with Andrew are a chance to connect with our community.

My goal is to give you the opportunity to seek the refuge of learning. CraftQuest may be just one place you learn but it's good to have you here.

A Beautiful Mess

During last week's livestream we answered a viewer question about how fragile web technology feels sometimes. The viewer asked us what we think about how it seems that our projects, code–the entire web–is held together by string.

I don't think it's unusual to think that things you are close to–thing you've built or know how they're built–can seem especially fragile; there's no veneer of mystery. You know the gears that turn inside the box that make the project run.

That aside, it's okay to be okay with the fragility of it all (that includes the ephemerality of what we build). As we progress through our careers the things we build are slowly decaying behind us. It doesn't mean the work didn't help someone or some cause. It doesn't mean it "wasn't worth it." It just doesn't last forever. And, in the process, it feels a bit too fragile for our own comfort.

But...what do I know? I'm just a tiny speck spinning in circles while flying through space at a 67,000 miles per hour.

I''ve been redoing the Twig Templates in Craft course with completely new content, and a downloadable/printable handout that summarizes key points in the course. The redo is still in-progress and will be done next week.
Learning Pathways are now called Quests. Grab your sword and slay a dragon! Wait, there are no dragons. But you can slay a course and level up!?
In courses you can now mark individual videos as played once you''ve started them. I''ll roll it out to lessons and livestreams soon!

I added the last 2 new videos to the Component Libraries with Fractal (and Twig) course this week. These two videos cover exporting the component library so it's usable outside of the build process. We cover how to do a static export and how to build on that to auto-deploy and -publish to GitHub Pages via GitHub Actions.

This course is a different topic than I usually cover here at CraftQuest but my ultimate goal is create lessons and courses that promote a well-rounded, generally knowledgable developer over someone who is merely a pigeon-holed specialist.

I know that sounds peculiar coming from the person that has an entire site dedicated to training on Craft CMS. But take a look at the training library...we cover a lot of non-Craft topics. Because they are important, too!

While on a personal retreat recently, I was reading David Epstein's book Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World. The thesis of the book is that generalists have the greatest impact on the world because of their desire to explore, prod, shift careers, fail, and frequently quit. Why? Here's what Epstein says: "Knowledge increasingly needs not merely to be durable, but also flexible–both sticky and capable of broad application."

He encourages the reader to expand their range, seek more information outside of the specialized area you think you occupy. You might find something helpful from the spaces outside your domain.

As always, I create training material on CraftQuest to help you grow in your profession, have fun, and learn something new.

What's New in Craft 3.5

Yesterday, the Craft 3.5 RC (release candidate) was published. That's a version of Craft 3.5 that, barring any issues, will be the final 3.5 release of Craft. I put together a course that covers the most important new features and stuff you'll care about most.

Big features in Craft 3.5, Commerce Courses

The top line news of the day is that Craft 3.5 is coming very soon! It has some really nice developer and authoring experience improvements. The course above covers the changes in 3.5 to how Project Config works, as well as how to use the new Project Config utility.

SITE UPDATES
I've been focusing recently on updating the material by redoing courses (like the Twig Templates in Craft course) to keep them current and removing videos that are no longer relevant. There's also a slightly new look to the site so it's easier to fit more video learning on your screen.

I've updated the Craft Commerce courses, including a new course on building a subscription site with Craft Commerce Subscriptions. With so much more content now, I've created a new Learning Quest for Commerce.

I hope you are safe and healthy and following all local protocols during COVID-19.?

Because CraftQuest is 100% virtual learning, nothing has changed here. In fact, the value of online resources like CraftQuest has only increased because it is available wherever you are and I can continue to make videos wherever I am (which currently is an improvised office set up in our TV room at home).?

This week I released two new videos:

?Learn in Public: Alpine.js - Andrew Welch and I sat down and tried to figure out Alpine.js live on the air. We had a supportive audience, which included the creator of Alpine.js.
Building a Donation Form with Craft Commerce - ?For the last few years I''ve had this fictional coffee shop going (it''s actually the sample some of my courses) and even sometimes fiction can have a little reality. For this lesson I created a donation form for the furloughed employees of Crafty Coffee. The owners of Crafty Coffee are asking that patrons donate to the fun in lieu of buying coffee.

If you haven''t already reviewed our Learning Pathways, it''s a great way to get started on CraftQuest and find the material you need to get over a problem, skill up, or finish a project.

Sprigcart is a reactive Craft Commerce cart that consists of three products that can be rotated and added to the shopping cart. Sprigcart uses multiple components that can re-render each other.
