Solid State Watch. -
We've been forever super fans of the electronics inside the Casio F-91W.
This 30 year old piece of technology is tiny, cheap and keeps time more accurately than a $30K Rolex.
That's why we decided to cast the classic digital movement in transparent resin.
No buttons, no light, no battery changes. Set to whatever time you'd like.
Yes it will drift, and eventually die. But what else can live in a completely sealed environment for 10 years?
Let's celebrate this nugget of technological ingenuity.
If you want in, support the project. It's live NOW for a quick 15 day Kickstarter campaign.

Over the weekend, Che-Wei and the Helpful Engineering team
were all hands on deck designing a new

More free jump ropes.
-
This is obviously not a time to be buying
random stuff, but it is a time to think about who you
can support.
Last week we gave away 10 free #stayhome jump ropes as a way
to encourage people to stay home and stay physically and mentally healthy.
We assembled more free #stayhome jump ropes, yipeee!
We want these jump ropes to be as accessible
as possible, so you can pay $0 for jumprope or if you're
able, add a pen, or a Time Since Launch or another CW&T item
to your cart for
someone special (yourself? ??).
Think of this as a pay-what-you-can
jump rope.
Did you know we also have jump ropes that aren't made from scrap pen parts?
-> Forever Jump Rope & High Speed Jump Rope
Please know your continued support is
what makes it possible to work on things like an
open-source respirator during this time of need.
We are forever grateful for that.

3D print testing... our fdm printer is really on its last legs :/
Indoor flying practice.
We're coming to really appreciate this
extra family time. But it's
not all flying through the air and building forts.
Monday was a busy work day with lots of surprise meetings, so our
kids admittedly ended up in front of a screen for a lot the day, ate
lunch at 2:30 and ate a crappy dinner. We know a lot of you can relate to this. Hang in there.

Perfection + Control. -
A big thank you to those who have already supported Solid State Watch. We never know
what how any project will be received until it is launched. And sincerely appreciate
and take to heart the support and feedback we have received.
Solid State Watch
Solid State Watch casts the insides of a digital watch
permanently in resin. And lately we've been thinking about what it feels like
to bring this timepiece into the world.
This project asks us to accept and welcome
a new kind of relationship to timekeeping + technology.
One where we deliberately relinquish 2 things technology seeks
to afford us: perfection + control. And invites us to take pause at
something worth looking at, the performance of a digital timepiece over time.
What we see will not be perfect, and will involve a conscious surrender
to whatever deficits it lends. An act we actually do everyday with our phones and laptops,
but usually without our direct consent.
Maybe this is scary, but we've found comfort in putting it on
every morning. So much in life we cannot control, but
we nonetheless attach to those things an illusion of control.
This thing just is, and eventually won't be, and we've signed up.
Something about that feels pretty beautiful.
Solid State Watch
A look back.
-
We've been remembering a few of our favorite artworks. Below is Untitled (Perfect Lovers) 1989 by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. It
is two off the shelf, battery powered clockes placed side by side and touching. Eventually they will fall out of sync and one of them will stop working.
Image from Moma.org.
And here is Perfect Lovers (forever) 2002 by Tobias Wong.
Similary to Gonzalez-Torres, Wong placed two identical battery
powered
clocks side by side, however these ones fitted with atomic radio receivers to keep time
accurately up to 1 second every 1 million years.
Image from NYT.
The context Gonzalez-Torres and Wong created these pieces
were different from each other and radically different
from what we are doing now.
But there is something profound and poetic within the relationship between
the human body and the technological body that continues to inspire us.

Helpful Engineering -
On Saturday night we joined
Helpful Engineering and for the past 4 days, CW has been
all hands on deck designing an open source modular respirator to help
offset healthcare worker shortages.
As of yesterday, the 3D printable design passed NIOSH testing and we're quickly
moving towards distributed production through print farms and volunteers with 3D printers at home.
In parallel, we're designing an injection molded silicone version to be able to
rapidly deploy at scale.
This 9k+ person grassroots effort is working on ventilators, bag valves,
info graphics, and more.
Designers, engineers, community organizers, programmers, project managers,
and doctors, we could use everyone's help. If you have time and can help, please join and start with this
onboarding doc.

One of our bestest friends Rebeca Raney (artist + art educator)
has been planning
an interactive play market and festival called Ray's Beret.
The inaugural festival is obviously on hold for now, but
Rebeca is going full force documenting
creative activites for kiddos. If you've got kids,

Seriously. Right now. Follow her.
This weekend we cobbled together and gave away a bunch of #stayhome jumpropes.
These were made from bad Pen Type-A parts, which we sawed, chamfered and laser etched.
We just got another shipment of cords, so we'll be making more to give away soon!

They are available for free on our website, you just have to pay for shipping.
Please don't get more than 5, we want to make sure everyone can play.

Things that made us smile this week... -
Finding a bottle of Elmer's Glue in the fridge.
The
Amulet Series. It's rare (and by rare we mean never before happened)
to find books we all (2yo, 5yo and grown-ups) enjoy.
Sanding sticks from the backyard into the smoothest most magical wands.
Art collabs.
CW bought a TV. The box came with a vivid image of a snowy mountain
range and #Tree9WL was convinced it was a machine to make our house freeze.

just more of that.

Poetic Hardware Online. -
Our new online class Poetic Hardware taught at SFPC (School For Poetic Computation) is live for applicants.
We've been teaching an IRL version of this class for the past 3 semesters
and have been working for
the past couple months on modifying our curriculum for online teaching.
This week on #CWTIO we're going to chat with Artist, Educator, Activist, SFPC founder and wonderful human
Taeyoon Choi about how we're
revamping the Hardware curriculum for remote learning, but also thinking about how to foster the same
type of community and supportive learning environment we have when we get to be in person.
In Poetic Hardware we learn computational hardware as a way to engage with the physical
world and broaden our creative practices. This 10-week online curriculum is supported by
a custom electronics learning kit intended for beginners to learn about analog +
digital electronics, a programmable micro-controller, sensors and mechanisms through a
lens of legibility and thoughtful exploration.
Read more about Poetic Hardware + Apply
And if you have questions, reach out or tune into our IG live this coming week.
Darkball. -
Our friend Jonathan Bobrow (who appeared on last weeks #CWTIO) is nailing his 2nd Kickstarter for Blinks, the worlds first smart, tabletop game system.
This time with 6 new games, and one of them designed by yours truly (Che-Wei).
The game is called darkball, and it's a
modified version of an iOS timing game he built for his Media Lab thesis.
It's kind of like 1D pong. It's really fun and easy to play. There are many other games with a wide range of game styles also available on Blinks. Check them out!

Living Sounds. -
This brings us so much joy.
Living Sounds is a live mix of sounds from dozens of handmade microphones located
throughout a restored wetland called Tidmarsh in Plymouth, MA.
This is a project from the Responsive Environments group at MIT Media Lab and
slow immediate.
Tidmarsh used to be a cranberry farm, and has been undergoing restoration for the past 8 years.
We visited Tidmarsh with friends who were working on the project back in 2013 and it's wonderful to see
this as something that has come out of the restoration project, especially right now. Visit the site and just soak in the sounds. It will transport you.
enjoy :)
