Ahead of the world premiere of Chotto Xenos, we asked Director Sue Buckmaster to tell us more about the creative process behind adapting the performance to make it suitable for younger audiences, and why they chose to adapt this work specifically.
"Aspects of the original XENOS will be interwoven with more child-friendly content to present a unique new production. Children today are exposed to images of war through social media and the concept of conflict as fun through video games. They deserve to have some creative reflection time to ponder on what it means to them, the lives of those they are close to and the world they will grow up in. They are also subjected to a rather limited education about the history of war, often neglecting a very necessary re-telling of the soldiers experience, where they are from and what they believe they are fighting for. Our future peace processes rely on us inspiring a younger generation to be more tolerant and understand the triggers for conflict and ways to manage it. This begins in the playground but unfortunately doesn’t end there."

DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training
The Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) offers high-quality training to young people aged 10 – 18 who have exceptional talent and potential in dance from the East of England.
The programme supports and nurtures young people who are ready to make a commitment to intensive training in dance. It is supported by the Department for Education and offers means tested grants to cover all or part of the training.
Graduates can continue to full-time education, with many of them training at conservatoires or universities to study for degrees, diplomas and professional qualifications in dance. You can read about what our alumni are up to here.
Audition applications for dancers aged 10 - 16 years are now open. Both non-experienced and experienced young dancers are encouraged to apply - we are looking for potential, dedication and enthusiasm, and people who like to move!
Our CAT Team will be running free Taster Workshops across the East of England throughout February.
We highly recommend that you come along to a Taster Workshop and/or an Open Event to ask any questions you may have, to meet our staff and teaching team, and participate in a Contemporary and Creative Dance Workshop.
Tasters will be held in Ipswich, Norwich, Colchester, and Cambridge, and our Open Day and Open Evening events will be held here at DanceEast. We will also be holding a Boys Only taster, exclusively for male-identifying participants.
If you think the CAT is perfect for you or someone you know, head to our website to find out more and book your free place at a taster day.
