Thank you for joining us in our mission to get God’s Word to Deaf people in their sign languages. There’s a lot I want to share with you, but first, I need to ask you a question:

How did you first discover that God loved you?

Probably the same way I did—someone told you. They shared the Gospel message with you in a way you could understand. In your own heart language.

As you’ll see in this short video, it’s how Deaf people like Andrew and Deborah, and many others find out, too! Only they aren’t reading or hearing about God’s love, they are seeing it in their sign language!

The Gospel was revealed to them by seeing it in Ugandan Sign Language through Deaf Bible ... and, as this video shows, everything began to change for each one of them!

But, did you know that Ugandan Sign Language is just one of more than 400 sign languages? Or, that none of them has a complete Bible yet?

Together, with your support, Deaf Bible Society is committed to …

accelerate sign language Bible translation projects,
train consultants to check the accuracy of the translation work, and
distribute sign language Scripture to Deaf communities around the world.

There are more than 70 million Deaf people in the world today. Most of them have never seen the Gospel in their sign language. We want to make Jesus known to them. We know you want this, too.

Hello Grayson,

When you go through hard times—in your relationships, career, finances, health—where do you turn?

I often turn to the comfort and wisdom of Scripture. You probably do, too.

But how do you know what stories and passages will speak to your situation, and give you the strength to keep going? Or how to apply the Word to your life?

This was the challenge Mel and Kari faced. They were a young Deaf couple struggling in their marriage.

Though they’d been attending a Deaf church for some time, there wasn’t a lot of growth in their relationship with each other or with God. They struggled to understand the Bible and apply it to their lives and their marriage.

You see, it’s not enough just to translate a passage and “put it out there” on something like the Deaf Bible app. A sword is just a sword until you know how to wield it.

For Deaf people to discover these powerful translated resources and know how to use them, we need to get the Word out through Deaf leaders—which means identifying, training, and equipping them to reach others in their own community.

This is why Deaf Bible Society doesn’t stop at making sure Deaf people have a Bible in their sign language—but actively works to make sure they know God’s Word and are equipped to share it, too!

Over and over, we’ve seen how raising up Deaf leaders to reach others in their community increases engagement with the Gospel in sign languages worldwide. In fact, this proven strategy is what made the difference for Mel and Kari!

Deaf Bible Society President and Chief Executive Officer J.R. Bucklew announced last week that the Board has accepted his resignation from the organization. The Board of Directors has appointed Mrs. Chantel Pagan, who serves as Chief Development Officer, and Mr. Adan Burke, who serves as the Chief Program Officer, as Co-Interim CEOs, effective immediately. Bucklew will finish out his administrative leave until May 2020. Thereafter, he will continue to be an advocate to the organization where the Lord leads him.

Bucklew stated, “My heart still longs to see every Deaf person presented with the Gospel message in their sign language!” He also shared, “It has been my life’s privilege to be used by the Lord to serve Deaf Bible Society for the past seven years. I remember the first time I stepped out of an airplane onto the mission field in Northern Ethiopia, little did I know then, how the Deaf ministry work that began through me in Ethiopia would result in the formation of the organization Deaf Bible Society. I’m amazed at what has been accomplished, and I am encouraged by the ways that I’ve experienced collaboration bring forth a growth that can and should only be accredited to God.

With sincere gratitude, I want to express my thanks to the staff, ministry and resource partners, and the Board of Directors, for walking this journey alongside me. Thank you for placing your trust in me and allowing me the privilege to lead this organization. I will forever be a bearer of the fruit of your gifts in my life and witness to the hope that Christ has/is for Deaf people.

The decision for resignation did not come easily or lightly. Both Word and Spirit have prompted me to enter a season to rekindle my identity in Christ. It is a season of restoration, rest, and replenishment. The Board of Directors has asked me to thoughtfully and prayerfully consider returning in May of 2020 to serve in another capacity. I would ask you to please be praying for my family as we seek how the Lord would have us serve Him in this next season of our lives. We deserve to be used by Him as He directs.”

Deaf Bible Society Board Treasurer, Mel Morris, said, “J.R. Bucklew has served DBS with dedication since 2012. He grew the organization from a department under Faith Comes By Hearing to a thriving organization. He has also been dedicated to serving the Deaf Bible cause since day one, and his service to Deaf Bible Society and the Deaf community at large is a reflection of that dedication, and we are so thankful.

The Board of Directors will engage in an executive search to identify a new President and CEO and will work closely with Deaf Bible Society’s Interim Co-CEO’s to facilitate an effective transition.

John Dickinson, Board Chairman, said, “J.R. has served as an inspiration and visionary for providing God’s Word in every sign language. He has brought light to the great need of my fellow Deaf communities around the world. He helped not only to put Deaf people groups on the map but also in the hearts of Bible translation organizations around the world. I am excited to see what vision God births in him next."

Hope is an amazing thing. When life is hard, Hope reminds us that His mercies are new every day. When people or situations don’t go the way we expect, Hope steadies our strength to run the race well. When we feel all alone, Hope comforts us by knowing He is with us. God’s Word gives us Hope for all days and with your partnership, Hope will multiply this #GivingTuesday!

Hello Grayson,

You might be surprised, especially in this day and age, but only 2% of the world’s Deaf community has been exposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Most, like Josh and his dad, struggle to study written Scripture because it is in a language that’s not their own.

Josh’s story in this short video explains how text Bibles and spoken messages used by hearing believers simply don’t work well for the Deaf community. He is so thankful for technology that’s changing the way he and his dad do devotions!

I was inspired by Josh’s story—and because of your interest and passion for reaching the Deaf community, I know you will be, too. As you watch and read his story, I want you to keep this in mind: What Josh and his dad experienced—opening the Scriptures together in their first language, American Sign Language—can happen again and again in the Deaf community!

Together, you and I can help equip Deaf people to reach more people in their communities, like Josh and his dad, through Scripture in their own heart sign language!

Here are a few of the ways Deaf Bible Society is engaging with the Deaf community through technology:

1. Deaf Bible—a platform allowing Deaf people to engage with God's Word in dozens of sign languages. Whether engaging with Scripture through the Deaf Bible app on a phone or tablet, or online via the Deaf Bible website, each provides the end user with the same excellent Deaf Bible experience!

2. Deaf Church Where—a website providing the Deaf within the U.S. a visual resource to find Deaf churches and ministries nationwide.

3. Micro SD Cards—Deaf people living in remote and hard-to-reach regions can access God's Word in their sign language without the Internet.

It’s incredibly exciting knowing that technology and teams of people are coming together so that the Deaf can get to know Jesus in their sign languages!

You haven’t forgotten Deaf people.

Through your interest in learning more about the Deaf community and helping to effectively communicate God’s love and His Word with them, you show this to be true.

Deaf communities, which God loves so dearly, have long been ignored and overlooked by many—including the hearing Christian community. I’m sure you’ll agree that this has to change, and is changing thanks to Deaf advocates like you!

Mike Silva, a world-renowned evangelist, also decided to become a Deaf advocate ... and it’s transformed his ministry in a beautiful way:

We recently finished a large festival here in Colombia and we discovered for the first time that there were at least 12,000 Deaf individuals in this city! Before, we’ve gone into cities and left cities, and we never asked [about Deaf people], but now we’ve been made keenly aware and it has changed our ministry.

We had [interpreters for Deaf people] at our festival for the very first time, and it opened up [ministry to] a people group that once was missed and overlooked. We’re convinced that when the Bible says that we are to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone, that obviously includes people who cannot hear.

It’s because of you, and your ministry, that you have empowered us to become better, more effective, more sensitive, and more obedient to the call of Jesus Christ!

Hello Grayson,

Can you imagine trying to read God’s Word in a language other than the one you use every day?

As a Deaf person, Tanya went through this confusion and frustration every time she tried to read a written Bible in English.

She wants to share her inspiring testimony with you for herself—in American Sign Language (ASL), her heart language. I encourage you to watch her story in her language and read it in yours.

Hello Grayson,

On a dark night, a star shone brightly in the sky. A sign to point the way.

Imagine the excitement and anticipation the wise men felt as they traveled to Bethlehem that fateful evening so long ago. One of our Scripture Engagement Specialists felt a similar way at being able to share God’s Word with Deaf communities in India:

On this day, I have the privilege of distributing Scripture content in multiple sign languages. My heart races, this is God’s Word! Hello Grayson,

Many people struggle to understand God’s plan for their lives. Imagine not having access to Scripture in your language and trying to navigate through the hardships in life.

For Bridget in Uganda, her life was turned upside down, but seeing God’s Word in her sign language gave her great Hope for the future:

When I lost my hearing, I thought God was punishing me. Why me, Lord? I began learning sign language. I realized I couldn’t keep going to my parent’s church because they didn’t have an interpreter. Eventually, I decided to stay at the Deaf church, where they used sign language. Since then, the Lord has greatly blessed me with a godly husband, a child, and a church where I can help other women. My hope rests in God.

Bridget’s story shares more of what happened to her by having access to Scripture in her sign language and how she is now helping others have Hope.

In these last few days of 2019, we want to encourage you to have Hope and to Give Hope!

The end of the year can sometimes create a sense of loss, but with God, you have Hope in the promise of tomorrow! You press on, eyes on the goal, continuing to pray. This is exactly what Torok’s parents did. They prayed for years for him to know Jesus. As Torok shares, their prayers were finally answered:

Throughout my life, my parents faithfully planted tiny seeds in my soul. As God’s Word was signed in a language that flowed from my heart, those seeds were nourished, and I understood the message for the first time! I accepted Jesus and began a new life in Christ.

There is so much more to Torok’s story. Through him having access to Scripture in his Romanian Sign Language, he is now a Deaf pastor showing Jesus to others!

Hello Grayson,

What are you doing this last day of 2019? How do you want to enter into 2020?

Around this time last year, a young Deaf Filipino woman named Ira was on her way to America. It was her first time crossing the ocean. Her first time in America. Her first time presenting in front of a crowd of 40,000 hearing young adults. Ira had a lot of firsts.

Ira’s testimony impacted both hearing and Deaf alike.

A hearing person stated, “We were about to encounter something extraordinary only God could orchestrate. It was Isaiah 43:19 coming alive, God was about to do something new, and we felt the movement of it.”

Emma Faye, a Deaf Advocate, shared, “As Ira laid out her life before the audience, all language barriers melted away. All my years of speech therapy, separation, and isolation faded as I saw a new day with a bridge built between the two worlds of Deaf and hearing. My tears flowed for all Deaf people to experience the same hope as Ira!”

Ira found hope in Jesus through access to Scripture in her sign language. You can end this year by giving 10 Deaf communities around the world first-time access to Scripture in theirs during 2020.

You may be going to church today. A day set aside for believers to join together in worship and learn more about God through His Word. But what if your church didn’t have God’s Word? Suppose you didn’t have a Bible in your language to know His Truth that gives great Hope?

Millions of Deaf people around the world do not have access yet to God’s Word in their sign languages. Bible content is available, but it needs to be shared with them so they too can see the Hope found in Jesus.

Today, we celebrate big news! For the first time ever, Deaf communities have access to all 66 books of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, completed in American Sign Language — giving freedom to connect with God in a language of the heart!

Deaf Missions CEO, Chad Entinger signs, Finally! We have all 66 books of the Bible translated in American Sign Language (ASL). It’s about time! Our sign language is a cherished language of our hearts.

When God’s Word is in my sign language, I see that He values me as a person. It shows me that God knows my language, and that allows me the freedom to communicate with Him.

ASL is not just a language, but it’s part of me and my culture. It’s my identity — who I am. God’s Word in ASL is a very powerful message and a natural connection to Jesus.

Now, our completed work can help inspire other translation teams knowing that at least one sign language Bible has been completed [out of 350+] — if we can do it, then they can too!

Dear Grayson,

What are you grateful for?

This year especially.

I remember being awake in the darkness one night. It was last spring, about a month after many of us started working remotely because of COVID-19.

Running through my mind were thoughts of our team and our partners. The difficulties we were facing. The ministry interrupted.

As I lay there, I set my phone on the lowest brightness possible. These words came to me: The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you (Deuteronomy 31:8, NIV).

I thought of the vision that has filled my dreams since the Lord called me into Deaf ministry. The vision to see God’s Word in the hands of the 70 million Deaf people… who live among more than 350 unique Deaf communities… all with distinct sign languages and cultures.

As I lay there, I knew… The God who brought light and life to our world is the One who sustains us. His Spirit fills us with hope even when circumstances seem uncertain.

This year especially.

You and I have much to be grateful for as we share Scripture in sign languages with Deaf people everywhere.

Among more than 350 sign languages known around the globe:

29 have Scriptures recorded in sign language videos
1 of the 29 has all 66 books of the Bible in sign language — a major accomplishment this year!
18 sign language translation projects are in progress

I am also grateful for the amazing technology of the Deaf Bible App and tiny SD memory cards. It’s incredible that we can share Scripture in sign languages on mobile phones!

So, as I lay there with my phone set on the lowest brightness possible, I gave thanks.

The light of God’s Word is shining brighter than ever for Deaf people!

Seeing Scriptures in his sign language gave one Deaf team leader great faith to lead confidently in Christ.

Mirela shares: As I watch the story of Moses in my sign language, my face becomes tight. Moses refuses God’s invitation. He tells Him to find someone else, someone better. Moses sees himself as disabled, unskilled, and unable to do the task before him.

I wondered, who told Moses he was unskilled and unable?

Through grace, God shows Moses he was chosen and perfectly imperfect for the job. One day at a time, God gives Moses the confidence to have great faith and continue on for the people.

I am like Moses! Uncertain at times, yet a servant of the Lord.

Every day as our team comes together, I remember this story. Faith like Moses helps me put my trust in God. It was by faith, Moses led the people across the Red Sea.

If He could encourage and lead Moses to do great things for His people, I can only imagine what he can do through me!

Summer 2020 - Issue 1

Dear Grayson,

It is a pleasure to share this year''s first issue of our quarterly newsletter with you! In the coming months, we will share key developments in how God’s Word is impacting global Deaf communities. In each issue, we will update you with news from Deaf Bible Society, stories of joy from the field, and ways to pray alongside us as this Great Commission initiative unfolds.

A lot has happened since we kicked off our new fiscal year in April. Though the global landscape is ever-changing and we are walking through unprecedented challenges, the Lord has been faithful to make way for this mission to march on. Our annual report shows steady stewardship and planted seeds bearing fruit. In June, we celebrated a significant 5-year milestone in our organization’s history. It is with joy that we look back on all that God has accomplished in and through us working together!

Your faithful partnership, support, and prayers are gifts that encourage us to continue toward God''s call to provide God''s Word in Every Sign Language.

Updates from the Field

•.The Translation Acceleration Team supports Deaf translation teams worldwide through encouragement, prayer, and training. We thank God for those teams who must brave the conditions to persevere in their work and that their funding is stable.

•.God has blessed 6 translation teams with the Sign Language Translation Tool. This software simplifies translation work and allows for remote feedback with translation consultants. We look forward to version 1.0 being released by the end of the month.

•.In collaboration with Wycliffe Bible Translators USA, our Curriculum & Training team is updating the training program for our Translation Acceleration team. In the future, this improved training will support local project managers assisting Deaf translation teams.

•.Despite travel restrictions, the Josiah School of Translation staff continues to advance curriculum development for translation teams undergoing training in the coming months.

Pray with Deaf Bible Society

•.Pray for churches as they grow in creativity and offer online services so that access becomes available to their local Deaf communities.

•.Pray for the dedicated international translation teams who must continue to commute to work by public transportation or by walking great distances daily!

•.Pray for those in Deaf communities who feel even more isolated during this season of COVID-19. May they feel the presence of the Lord and His comforting hand - maybe for the first time!

As Kevin’s group gathers regularly for spiritual growth, Scriptures in American Sign Language come alive through study and discussion.

Kevin shares: I am very thankful for the experience that I have been given to learn, grow, and broaden my horizons to know more about God through sign language Scripture. This is a huge need within Deaf communities.

It''s been over a year since we started meeting, and we are still going strong today!

This Deaf gathering shows me that there is a definite community impact here — evident in the very fact that our group meets as often as we do, even after a year.

God''s Word in sign language is alive and lives on! Deaf believers will never stop meeting and talking about God''s Word in sign language in the same way that sign language Scripture will never fade.

Through our eyes, in our hearts, and on our hands — God’s Word in sign language is a part of us.

Derek experienced Truth for the first time when he watched Scriptures in his sign language. His new discovery led his Deaf community to know that Jesus is The Word!

As Derek watched translated video Scriptures in American Sign Language, he noticed that in John 1:1-3 the WORD was signed as a person! What! Derek had never noticed the WORD as a person before while reading the written Bible.

If the Trinity is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, then who was the Word? Did it mean that the Trinity was wrong? Was it supposed to be the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, and the Word?

He wanted more information. He was on a path to seek truth!

He went back and watched the full chapter of John 1. And there it was, signed clearly in John 1:14, “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”

“The Word is Jesus!” Derek exclaimed.

What an incredible revelation!

After this, Derek rushed to tell as many people as possible about his encounter. Another Deaf leader was astonished at his findings. Their conversation led the Deaf church through something new—something only a Bible in a heart language could reveal!

Hello Grayson,

COVID-19 is disrupting every aspect of life and community. The question, ‘when will everything return to normal’ lingers. Even so, let us remain steadfast in His unfailing faith and our fixed hope in Christ! We hold onto verses such as 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Physical distancing may keep us apart, but we can unite spiritually with Christ-centered hearts. Many Deaf communities need prayer as they face a lack of information about COVID-19 in sign language and imperative steps to take, while others are facing the uncertainty of illness.

In God’s strength, Deaf Bible Society is committed to carrying out the mission of God’s Word in every Sign Language. Team members work remotely to support our valued partners and Deaf communities worldwide. Throughout it all, we are seeing many responding in faith, holding onto the precious promises in signed Scripture.

In this uncertain time, here are two ways you can help:
