A new Daily Beast report shows that Trump's own Department of Justice supports including provisions in the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act that close the boyfriend loophole — a large gap in federal firearm law that allows abusive dating partners to own guns — even though Republican Senators deem it "too political." TELL THE SENATE TO CLOSE THIS LOOPHOLE NOW

Let's be absolutely clear: There is nothing "too political" about closing the boyfriend loophole. Because of this gap in federal firearms law, abusive dating partners convicted of domestic abuse or under a final restraining order are able to own guns, simply because they are not married to their partner.

This loophole needs to be closed now — even President Trump's own Department of Justice agrees. Contact your Senators today and demand that they close this dangerous loophole.

Rather than taking up the bipartisan House-passed version of VAWA that would have closed the boyfriend loophole, Senate Republicans instead chose to introduce a version of the bill that does nothing to address this gap in federal firearm law. This version of VAWA would do nothing to protect women who are at risk of gun violence at the hands of their dating partners.

As a result, we need to put pressure on our Senators to do two things:

1. Oppose Senate Republicans' version of VAWA that does not include life-saving gun violence prevention provisions.
2. Vote for the House-passed version of VAWA, which will close the loophole for abusive dating partners.

Daniel — I miss my mom every day.

Seven years ago today, a gunman shot and killed 20 young children and six educators at Sandy Hook School.

My mom, Principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, was gunned down trying to protect her students and staff.

It's been seven years of mourning, but also seven years of fighting. Seven years ago, I made a pledge to never stop fighting. And now I'm asking you: Will you join me and pledge to fight for an end gun violence in 2020?

I'm fighting for an end to the gun violence that kills nearly 100 Americans every day and wounds countless others. I'm fighting for an end to the gun lobby's control over our elected leaders. I'm fighting for a future where our children are not traumatized by monthly active shooter drills. And a future in which concerts and bars, our houses of worship, and places of work are safe from the threat of gun violence.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook School, Congress had a chance to enact a comprehensive background checks bill to help prevent future tragedies. But NRA-backed politicians blocked it. And then the same thing happened after the tragic shooting in Las Vegas. And Parkland. And El Paso. And Dayton. And the gun violence day after day that kills 100 people and wounds many more — leaving families to face tragedy.

The NRA has been able to stymie our federal progress, but momentum is on our side. We have Gun Sense Majorities in the U.S. House of Representatives and in state houses across the country. We just flipped the Virginia state legislature, with gun safety atop the issues that drove voters to the polls.

A wave of 2018 electoral victories produced a Gun Sense Majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, and this year it passed the first major gun safety legislation through the House chamber in 20 years. And just last month, in Brenda Moss's home state of Virginia, we helped Gun Sense Candidates take control of both houses of the state legislature. We passed gun safety laws in 18 states and Washington D.C. — in red, blue and purple states across the country we're making progress on gun safety. And for the fifth year in a row, we stopped the NRA's priority bills over 90 percent of the time in state legislature after state legislature.

Next year, we'll build on our victories to press for background checks on all gun sales, strong red flag laws, measures to disarm domestic abusers, and other critical gun safety reforms in Congress and in states across the nation. In 2018, Moms Demand Action volunteers worked tirelessly to help elect governors who supported stronger gun laws. In Nevada and New Mexico, our volunteers fought for years for a law requiring background checks on all gun sales. This year, we won when newly elected Gun Sense Governors Steve Sisolak and Michelle Lujan Grisham signed background check laws with our volunteers by their side. In Illinois, Gun Sense Governor JB Pritzker signed a law to fight back against illegal gun trafficking.

Through multiple elections and legislative sessions, our volunteers have fought for gun safety, and we saw major progress in states after helping lead Gun Sense Governors to victory. We did this together, and we'll do more in 2020.

Last year, the House passed H.R. 8 — a bill that requires background checks on all gun sales — with bipartisan support. That was a major victory for the gun violence prevention movement: It was the first time either chamber of Congress passed significant gun safety legislation in over 20 years. And they didn't stop there — the House went on to pass multiple lifesaving gun violence prevention bills in 2019; but there is still critical work to be done.

The House has the opportunity to pass even more gun safety legislation this year, including bills like H.R. 1236: the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019. It's a bill that empowers law enforcement and family members to intervene at moments of crisis to prevent gun violence before it happens. But that will only happen if our U.S. Reps continue to prioritize gun violence prevention as a top priority.

Dear Daniel,

Eight years ago today, a gunman shot and killed 20 young children and six educators at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut.

My mom, Principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, was gunned down trying to protect her students and staff.

Since that terrible day, it''s been eight years of mourning, but also eight years of fighting for an end to gun violence. Eight years ago, I made a pledge to never stop fighting. And now I''m asking you: Will you join me and pledge to fight for an end to gun violence in 2021?

I''m fighting for an end to the gun violence that kills more than 100 Americans every day and wounds hundreds more. I''m fighting for an end to the gun lobby''s control over our elected leaders. I''m fighting for a future where our children are not traumatized by monthly active shooter drills. And I''m fighting for a future in which our concerts and bars, our houses of worship, and places of work are safe from the threat of gun violence.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook School, Congress had a chance to enact a strong background checks bill to help prevent future tragedies. But NRA-backed politicians blocked it. And then the same thing happened after the tragic shooting in Las Vegas. And Parkland. And El Paso. And Dayton. And so many others. And as a result, the daily gun violence in this country persists and far too many families are left to face tragedy.

But Daniel, the work that we have done this year has put momentum on our side. This year, we have elected the strongest gun safety presidential ticket in history with President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Growing up, my mom and I always had to think about being Black before we thought about anything else. It was Charleston in the 60s-home to segregation, Jim Crow laws, and us. My mother Ethel Lee Lance and I got followed, questioned, and turned away from places, just like everyone else who looked like us. The racism was baked into the very bones of our city: a continuous hurt, a soul-deep weariness, that came from being told at every turn that our Black lives didn''t matter.

Five years ago today, the racism that had followed us for our whole lives caught up to my mom: a white man filled with hate and armed with a gun murdered her and eight other Black people, including two of my cousins and one childhood friend, while they prayed in Charleston''s Mother Emanuel Church.

It was the same church where my mom first saw me preach, sitting in the front row and saying, "Amen, that''s my baby."

But the shooter who ended my mother''s life should not have been able to purchase a gun in the first place. He was prohibited from buying a gun and should have been stopped in his tracks by the background check he couldn''t pass. But because of an NRA-backed loophole that allows a gun sale to go forward when a background check takes longer than three business days, he was able to buy one anyway. The rest is tragic history, and the loophole is now named the "Charleston loophole" after my hometown.

Daniel, on the 5-year mark of my mother''s death, join me as a member of Moms Demand Action to fight for common-sense gun safety legislation like the bill that addresses the Charleston loophole.

Like so many of the problems that kill Black people in America, the Charleston loophole has gone unaddressed-even as the other victims'' families and I have continually called out for action. This inaction continues even though the loophole has likely become deadlier during the pandemic; a surge in gun sales has overwhelmed our background check system and made it likelier than ever that background checks will take longer than three business days. Each of those instances is a gun that could end up in the hands of someone like the man who killed my mom.

Join me as a Moms Demand Action volunteer and be a part of the fight to end gun violence and take on the NRA''s deadly agenda.

In recent weeks and months, I''ve been thinking a lot about my mom, my cousins, my friends, and the others that were killed five years ago today. Because their lives, and their deaths, are not so different from those of George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks, and so many others whose murders were enabled by systemic racism and hate in our country. Nor are they that different from the tens of thousands of Black people in America who have been killed by COVID-19, a virus that kills us at disproportionate rates because of that same systemic racism.

Daniel, that''s why I write today: to keep my mom''s memory alive on the 5-year mark of her death, to keep pushing forward like she always did, and to do my part to disarm hate while protestors across the country march to stamp it out. Day by day, protest by protest, we can bring about an awakening-on the Charleston loophole and so many other issues that Black people in America have faced for centuries.

All I can hope for is that some of you will join me in this fight, and that my mom is looking down on me now, saying what she said that first time she saw me preach: "Amen, that''s my baby."

There''s a reason NBC News said "extremists see a call to arms" when they reported on Trump''s "LIBERATE" tweets. And here are just some of the most recent scenes from these armed protests:

• In Kentucky over Memorial Day weekend, a gun rights rally turned into an anti-lockdown protest and ended with the mock hanging of an effigy of Governor Andy Beshear. In addition to hanging an effigy of the Governor from a tree in front of children, the protesters marched on the Kentucky capitol building against the stay-at-home order.


• In North Carolina, one leader of the armed stay-at-home protests posted online: "Are we willing to kill people? Are we willing to lay our lives down? We have to say yes."


• Armed protestors have shown up to the Michigan capitol multiple times now, menacing lawmakers inside the capitol building. Physical threats against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer were reported on the private Facebook pages organizing the protests.

President Trump, the NRA, and other far-right gun groups have used the tragedy of COVID-19 to push an extreme "guns everywhere" agenda. And they have legitimized the increasingly menacing and rage-filled armed protests against elected officials. This needs to stop now.

Just one year ago, our nation endured back-to-back mass shootings. In El Paso, Texas, a man fueled by hate opened fire at a Walmart, targeting Latino/a people. He killed 23 people and wounded 23 more. Less than 24 hours later, another shooter killed 9 people and wounded 17 more at a series of bars and restaurants in Dayton, Ohio.

As we honor the lives of those killed and wounded by gun violence, we also remember that out of the grief and rage came a lot of promises from elected leaders, even from NRA allies like President Donald Trump.

We also remember that all of those promises have been broken.

Daniel, the victims and survivors of gun violence deserve better.

Daniel, the deadly intersection of domestic violence and gun violence has only worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In recent months, there has been a sharp increase in requests to many domestic violence hotlines as well as text and chat platforms across the country.¹ Gun sales are surging, which has overwhelmed the background check system and increased the odds of domestic abusers obtaining guns.² And as research has found, loss of employment,³ fear of separation from family, and increased abusive behavior are all predictors of intimate partner homicide.⁴

Daniel, these facts are harrowing. But there are proven solutions to this crisis, ones which a Gun Sense Majority in Congress and the White House would enact. They would pass laws that keep firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers, such as closing the loophole that allows abusive dating partners to have guns. By disrupting abusers'' access to guns, these laws would save lives.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we want to remind you that the crisis of domestic violence and gun violence in our country is on the ballot. If we''re going to address this crisis, we need to elect people who support common-sense gun safety.
