Our Virtual MLT II Training Class Launches Next Week

Designed in accordance with the ICML MLT Level II body of knowledge. 

Participants in the course will gain in-depth knowledge of the subject of lubrication and learn how to use that knowledge to continuously improve their lubrication tactics and dramatically enhance their lubrication program. The course covers a similar body of knowledge as the level I course, but it goes into greater depth for many topics. The level II course thoroughly covers lubricant formulation, manufacturing and performance. Article: When Water & Oil Mix, Assets Suffer 

Controlling the amount of water contamination in your lubricants will extend rotating-equipment life.

From an early age, we learn that oil and water do not mix. While that is not exactly true in the lubrication world, it is true to say that any degree of water in a lubricant can cause irreparable harm to lubricated components and the oil. When water enters an oil sump or reservoir, it exists in one of three distinct phases: dissolved, free, or emulsified. While each pose different challenges for lubricants, all three phases can significantly reduce equipment life, cause excessive maintenance costs, and lead to unscheduled downtime.

Much is made of solid-particle contamination, and rightly so-particles are the leading cause of lubrication-related failure. However, do not overlook the importance of controlling moisture.

Efficient Plant magazine recently published an article written by Des-Case Sr. VP of Business Development, Mark Barnes, on how for wet-sump applications, such as pumps and gearboxes, moisture is just as likely to induce a failure.

What is a Lube Room and Why is it Important? 

A lube room is just what it sounds like: a room or area in a facility where lubricant is stored. But in order for your plant's lube room to help you achieve your reliability goals, you need to know more than that.

Once your oil is filtered to the correct level, the battle to keep it that way begins immediately. One overlooked source of contamination is storing oil in the wrong place. Space inside a facility is often at a premium, but when you store oil outside, changes in surrounding temperature cause air to enter and exit the drum-and with it, moisture. If the drum is uncovered, dirt can settle on it, and small particles can enter the drum along with the air.

Move oil storage to a custom designed Lubrication Storage & Handling Room, the lubricant's sanctuary from a harsh plant environment. The "Lube Room" provides a dedicated storage area where lubricants can be adequately prepared and maintained for service.

Introducing Our New Compact Laser Particle Counter

Accurate insight into oil cleanliness levels in your equipment

Our new compact and lightweight particle counter utilizes the same accurate twin laser technology as our larger Portable Laser Particle Counter (PLPC), but is lighter, smaller and less expensive.

The unit comes with an integrated rechargeable battery for fluid analysis at remote locations. After connecting to your equipment, it will automatically measure and display particle contamination, moisture and temperature levels. Connecting the CLCP to the computer via an integrated USB converter and included software gives your customers the ability to do test result analyses or direct online operation.

Video Tip: The Importance of Using a Breather on Centrifugal Pumps 

Over 60% of pump bearing failures can be attributed to insufficient lubrication, particle contamination and corrosion, making lubrication arguably the most important aspect of maintaining centrifugal pumps.

During normal operations, pumps will breathe causing dirty, and often moist, plant air to enter the bearing housing. Using a desiccant breather that contains a 3 micron particle filter media in conjunction with a silica gel desiccant to remove moisture helps ensure that any air that enters the pump through the vent/breather port is both clean and dry.
