Light Up Your Art!
Ask any photographer, and they’ll tell you that learning how to manipulate light is critical to successfully capturing an image. You may not realize, however, that creating a realistic drawing of a subject also requires a strong understanding of light. The big difference? Instead of manipulating light, you need to know how to faithfully reproduce its effect on your subject.
This week, we’re sharing a variety of lessons designed to help you understand how to use light in your drawings for more realistic results.

Give Your Brain a Boost!
Drawing Improves Memory
There’s plenty of evidence that indicates drawing is a powerful brain booster. Drawing not only improves memory and mental health, it also helps people recover from traumatic brain injuries, increases attention spans, and nurtures observational skills.
But the benefits go both ways! By doing exercises to sharpen your cognitive skills, you can become a better, more accurate, and more insightful artist. This week, we’re highlighting lessons that will teach you to think - and see - from a whole new perspective.

Putting the Pieces Together!
Think about the last time you assembled a jigsaw puzzle. You probably have a few established techniques--maybe you put together the edges first, or separate the pieces into colors. But no matter what approach you took, it certainly involved taking an intensely close look at all the small details, and how they fit in with the larger image.
Drawing a portrait can be a lot like putting together a puzzle. You have to focus on the smallest details of your subject's face, while also tying those details into the larger whole. But with portraiture, those small details also offer clues to your subject's age, experience, personality, and emotions.
Today, we're sharing three lessons from our Create Portraits of People and Pets topic by Brenda Hoddinott, author of Drawing for Dummies.

Fabricate Your Art!
We've shared lessons on shading and texture before, but it takes some very specific techniques to render fabric in a realistic way. Every type of fabric has its own textures and colors built right in, but add folds and shadows, and you've got another level of complexity to tackle.
Drawing fabric can be a lot of fun, too, because it offers endless opportunities for composition. Drape it over an object, use it as a backdrop, dress your subject in it, or just ball it up and toss it in a corner - the choice is yours!
This week, we're showcasing three fabric-focused lessons from our Shading Textures and Patterns topic, by Brenda Hoddinott, author of Drawing for Dummies.

Bring Your Drawings to Life!
For many beginner-level artists, developing the ability to draw from memory or imagination is an important goal. Fortunately, online education makes it easier than ever to develop those important technical skills - and our new self-directed drawing course, Drawing from Line to Life, is one of the most comprehensive self-directed drawing courses available.
Created by Mike Sibley, one of the world's foremost graphite artists, this eight-week course uses a combination of theory and hands-on activities to help beginning artists develop basic, foundational drawing skills. Covering everything from planning and composition to shading and texture, Drawing from Line to Life will teach you everything you need to get started, whether you want to draw what you see, or create new worlds from scratch.

Step Up Your Shading Skills!
Many people don't realize that almost every drawing-whether the subject is human, animal, or object-benefits from shading. Subjects very rarely exist without shadows, curves, and light sources, and shading is the only way to properly render those details.
As a result, using shading techniques like hatching and squirkling is a great way to add complexity and depth to each and every drawing. This week, hone your shading skills with these lessons.

Let's Get Visual(ly Intelligent)!
Almost 50 years after the Rubik's Cube was invented, it's still one of the most recognizable toys ever invented. How did a simple 3D puzzle earn a spot on Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Greatest Toys list? There are a few obvious reasons: It's simple, inexpensive, fun, and challenging. But there are more subtle benefits to playing with the little cube. It:
Improves hand-eye coordination
Increased focus
Sharpens memory skills
Enhances problem-solving skills
Interestingly enough, making art offers many of the same benefits. This week, we're highlighting some of the lessons that promote the same benefits - all contained in our Drawing on Your Brain topic.

Eye Spy!
The phrase "The eye is the window to the soul" is tough to attribute. No one really knows who said it first, but variations have been credited to Shakespeare, Milton, Cicero, and the Bible. But like most persistent phrases, it holds an element of truth.
We can gather a lot of information by looking into someone's eyes; they hint at who a person is, how they're feeling, and sometimes even what they're thinking about.
Eyes are complex. That's why they can be so hard to draw - and why it's important to get them right. Today, we're highlighting five lessons that will help you master the art of drawing expressive and realistic eyes.

Fun with Erasers!
Kneaded or hi-polymer, the humble eraser can be an artist's best friend. For obvious reasons, of course; without an eraser, how would we clean up those stray lines or fix those bigger compositional errors?
As handy as they are, erasers are easily underestimated. They aren't just for fixing mistakes - erasers can also be used to create art, whether you choose to use them to add highlights to some shading, or to produce an entirely new image. This week, we're giving erasers the attention they deserve.

Shift Your Focus!
Learning to draw means learning to look at the world in a whole new way. When you see life through an artist's eyes, you start to assess the natural composition of street scenes, notice the negative space between objects, and pay attention to patterns, perspective, and pops of colour.
Eventually, inspiration will become part of your day-to-day life. This week, we're sharing lessons that will help you develop an artists' instinct for seeing subjects in a whole new way.
