Publication of the e-IRG workshop "Grand challenges of
e-Infrastructures within the new ERA"
National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb, 25-26 May 2020.
The Croatian Presidency of the Council of the Union has organized
its priorities with 4 pillars: an evolving Europe, a connected
Europe, a Europe that protects and an influential Europe. European
Research and Higher Education Area, in general, and Research
Infrastructures (including e-Infrastructures) in particular, can
make a significant contribution to all priority objectives,
through a range of activities, especially its flagship
e-Infrastructure projects or programs such as EOSC and EuroHPC.
The e-IRG Workshop organised in the framework of the Croatian EU
Presidency will take place on 25-26 May in Zagreb and aims to
address the Grand Challenges of e-Infrastructures within the new
ERA, through the following sessions:
* Future Skills in the new European Research Area (ERA)
* Empowering the e-Infrastructure partnerships in ERA
* Making data and services FAIR
The topics chosen for the workshop are very relevant to the
completion of the first phase of the EOSC and the ongoing changes
in the European e-Infrastructure landscape. And we promise to
bring equally relevant and interesting presenters.
The workshop is jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and
Education of the Republic of Croatia, University Computing Centre
University of Zagreb (SRCE) and e-IRG Secretariat, under the
auspices of the Croatian Presidency of the EU Council.
Participation will be free of charge. The working language will be
English.
More details of the workshop are available on the event website: http://e-irg.eu/e-irg-workshop-may-2020
Looking forward to see you in Zagreb!

Grand
challenges of e-infrastructures within the new ERA
25th May
afternoon webinar (14:00 - 15:45 CET)
Topic: Future skills in the new European Research Area
This session addresses the future skills in the new ERA landscape,
which are required to produce, circulate and use research-based
knowledge.? They are critical for the improvement of the
efficiency and effectiveness of the overall European research and
have an impact on educational ecosystems to overall market and
societal benefits. The session addresses the context of skills
development in the changing European e-Infrastructure landscape
and its effects on national and regional employment contexts.
This session will try to answer questions like: What are the
required future skills in Digital Europe? And what is needed in
terms of new skills so that the added value of open data and data
sharing can be exploited? What kind of skills development is
needed? What changes have had a big impact on the development of
learning and teaching in the past and which are to be expected in
the future? What is it needed to keep higher education relevant,
valuable and inclusive, in particular for higher education,
research and innovation?
Moderator: Ignacio Blanquer, e-IRG delegate from Spain
Speakers:
??? ??? ??? ??? Croatian State Secretary - Tome Anticic
??? ??? ??? ??? EOSC WG Skills Chair - Natalia Manola
??? ??? ??? ??? NI4OS-Europe - Sonja Filipovska
??? ??? ??? ??? ELIXIR Training - Fotis E. Psomopoulos
26th May
morning webinar (10:00 - 12:00 CET)
Topic: Empowering the e-Infrastructure partnerships in
ERA
Partnerships are getting into the focus of attention in Europe as
a means for funding, coordination and sustainability of
pan-European projects and initiatives and distribute the inherent
risk of these undertakings. This session aims to address the
practical benefits of joint activities in a federated environment
like the European Research Area. A dedicated focus of the session
is on partnerships in the European e-Infrastructure area and in
particular for the envisaged EOSC partnership.
This session will try to answer questions like: What do we want to
achieve with the EU partnerships? And what are the main issues
from MS/AC perspectives and EC? E.g. Governance, funding, voting.
Or others stakeholders' perspectives? What is the current state of
EuroHPC and EOSC and how is their cooperation foreseen?
Moderator: Matthew Dovey, JISC
Speakers:
??? ??? ??? ??? DG CONNECT - Liina-Mari Munari
??? ??? ??? ??? EOSC EB - Karel Luyben (tbc)
??? ??? ??? ??? SURF,NL - Erik Fledderus
26th May
afternoon webinar (14:00 - 15:30 CET)
Topic: Making the data and services FAIR with the focus
on current developments
The implementation of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible,
Interoperable, Reusable) principles are core of the European Open
Science Cloud to provide an infrastructure to facilitate Open
Science for all researchers in Europe. With the implementation of
the FAIR principles Europe has the chance to further their uptake
and provide an example for a paradigm change to science. The
current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the
importance of interoperability between data-holders, and the
relevance of accessing data in order to share knowledge without
constraints to users/researchers/providers of data and an open and
free approach of science.
This session will try to answer questions like:? How to bring FAIR forward, including the cultural aspect? What role do national public funding agencies play in the move towards FAIR data? How can we convince researchers to share data and implement FAIR principles?
Moderator: Paolo Budroni, e-IRG delegate from Austria
Speakers:
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? GoFAIR and CODATA - Barend Mons
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? EOSC and RDA, UKRI STFC - Juan Bicarregui
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? Open Access repository at Spanish National
Research Council (CSIC) - Isabel Bernal
Registration is open: http://e-irg.eu/workshop-2020-05-registration-online.

the webinar soon.

Dear Jan,
Thank you for the monthly digest below.
Could you let me know how we (PRACE,
EXDCI-2 project, maybe others in my network) could contribute to the news blog and monthly digest?
What kind of news would you be looking for? I could contribute (at least) calls for proposals (currently
one to fight COVID-19), event announcements, ecosystem support tools, and HPC success stories.
Thanks and best regards,
