Expanding Our Impact: Full Speed Ahead!
|
|
Recently three national funders awarded EMPath with a? combined $3.7 million investment, in recognition of the incredible promise of our approach. The funding will allow us to expand our direct services?, evaluate our impact, and ?scale up our impact nationally through our learning network. ?
In the coming year, we will be making big plans to reach record numbers of new participants-and to ensure that those families experience the same kind of transformative outcomes we've seen in our own programs.
But we still need your help to continue funding our existing work! Ahead of Giving Tuesday, check out the ways you can give to EMPath. Your gift helps to make sure our participants and mentors have the resources they need to stay on track and disrupt poverty.

This year's Impact Report is a special one. In spite of a tough year, EMPath participants, on the whole, ended the year in a better place than they were when they entered our programs: they are making more money, attaining more education, and more of them are managing to save money.
Perhaps most strikingly, in the midst of all of the world's upheaval, the vast majority-96%!-agree with the statement, "As a participant at EMPath, my life is changing for the better." We're so proud to share this year's Impact Report with you, as it truly reflects the hard work of our staff and participants.

Participant Perspective: David''s Story
|
|
David had been asked to speak at a celebration event for EMPath's MassLEAP program. As he stood in front of the room at Quincy Housing Authority and shared his experiences in the program, his own words struck him in a new light.
"I remember I said out loud what my credit score was, what my job position was, how much debt I had. I was thinking about it in the back of my head, and then [as I was speaking] it just dawned on me how far I had come," David recalls. The event was somewhat of an "aha" moment for him: "It drove me even more to make the most out of my final year and a half in the program."

Funder Feature: Women''s Foundation of Boston
|
|
The Women's Foundation of Boston is a recent partner of EMPath's, providing a three-year grant. The foundation was founded in 2017 by a number of women in the Greater Boston area, with a clear goal and vision to be a central vehicle for investing in women and girls, and to build a thriving network of female leaders in the nonprofit and business communities.
We spoke with Tulika Hainsworth, Partner Relationship Manager with the foundation:
"If you want to impact kids who are underserved, you need to impact the mothers," said Hainsworth. The Women's Foundation of Boston directly supports EMPath's flagship program, which has a proven track-record of helping low-income families reach the middle class.
|
The foundation started providing grants in 2018, and has provided over a million dollars to 19 organizations in the Greater Boston area that help women and girls on a path to economic mobility and sustainability.
To help sustain impact, the foundation prefers to provide multi-year grants to their partners. They know it takes multiple years to achieve significant economic gains that provide substantial outcomes.
We are grateful to the Women''s Foundation of Boston for their continued support!

As 2020 comes to a close, so do the time-limited tax provisions in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Now through December 31, 2020, cash gifts can have a greater impact:
- Those who take the standard deduction may now deduct up to $300 ($600 for couples) in qualified charitable contributions of cash. Normally, no deduction is permitted.
- Itemizers may deduct cash gifts up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income in 2020-up from 60 percent. Gifts to donor-advised funds and private foundations are not eligible.
- Required minimum distributions from retirement accounts are suspended for 2020. However, individuals still can make a qualified charitable distribution of up to $100,000 from their IRAs. The direct distribution to charity would not be included in taxable income.
Please consult a tax professional for more details or to answer any questions about your particular situation.

What is the Outcomes Workgroup?
Outcomes Workgroup meetings are quarterly meetings to discuss outcomes-related processes by sharing challenges, successes, data collection methods, reporting techniques, approaches to quality assurance, and other key issues.
|
Are you a Data Cat?
What was once an internal mascot is now an unofficial nickname for attendees of this workgroup: program and data managers, evaluation specialists, policy advocates, and funders-the people who want to see the data. If that''s you, join us at the next meeting.
