We have been putting together the programme of speakers for our Annual Conference on 18^th November 2020. After the feedback from last year, we have chosen to return to Aston University.

Environmental Challenges in 2021-what we can do

EPUK's Annual Conference once again takes place in a period of considerable flux. Along with the rest of the world, the UK is suffering from the health and economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic while the environment appears to be rejuvenated, albeit for the short term. Furthermore, although we have formally left the EU, we have yet to decide the form of our future relationship and what exactly will replace European environmental law. EPUK has been following the debate and commenting regularly, yet there remains much to be played for.

William Wilson of Wyeside Consulting and Professor Eloise Scotford of UCL will give an update and commentary on the Environment Bill.

The Government's strategy for regeneration includes significant investment in new infrastructure which will have environmental consequences, in particular for areas of quiet and tranquility.

Neil Wait, Environmental expert advising the HS2 project will present his findings on assessing and resolving environmental challenges.

Last year saw the launch of a major new initiative to improve air quality and to reduce the health impacts of air pollution.

Professor Stephen Holgate, newly appointed Clean Air Champion, will update Conference on progress for clean air action.

Dr Ian Mudway, Kings College London, will give an assessment of new research in health impacts.

Land contamination and remediation continues to be a major concern of EPUK members, especially with regard to asbestos and new issues arising from the decline in road fuel retailing sites.

Steve Forster Remedia Group Limited, Chair of Joint Industry Working Group in Soil and Asbestos and C & D Materials will give an update on the new AGS guidance on asbestos.

David Rudland, former EPUK Chair of Land Quality, will introduce a major new EPUK publication on decommissioning of petrol/diesel forecourts.

Dr Tom Henman, lead investigator from RSK, commissioned by the Scottish Government, will update on the CO2 disaster involving former coal mines in Gorebridge in 2014.

Noise issues will be addressed by

George Gibbs of Noise Consultants Ltd will present on noise mapping: potential further uses and opportunities.

Oliver Bewes Noise Manager, Infrastructure Directorate, HS2 Ltd will discuss noise issues associated with the high-speed train project.

Dr Antonio Martinez of Salford University will also be presenting his most recent research Environmental Noise after Covid-19: Issues and Opportunities.

The programme is planned to ensure online discussion in the sessions, with opportunity to question leading environmental experts. There will be opportunities for networking or video conferencing with other delegates and the possibility to make appointments with exhibitors.
