Farm Fresh Rhode Island is saddened and angered by the murder of George Floyd, as well the countless Black Americans before him who have been injured or killed by racism and white supremacist violence. As an organization, we stand in solidarity with those harmed, and with those who protest the harm done.

We recognize that systemic, institutional racism is violence as well, creating disparities that place People of Color at a continual disadvantage in health, economics, education, and quality of life. We stand against this form of racism as well, against its ubiquity and silent malice.

COVID-19 and the resulting economic disaster illuminate and underscore the disproportionate injuries to People of Color. This stark fact will not change until individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, states, and the nation stand up to undo racism at every level in society. Racism was created by white people and must be undone by white people. This will only happen through individual and collective actions, today and every single day.

Working for positive change, Farm Fresh adds our voice in recognizing that structural and systemic racism are at the core of American society, and that our nation''s food system is the result of a history of slavery, oppression, exploitation, white supremacy, and greed. We are committed to identifying and dismantling racism in our organization and recognize we have a long way to go.

We continue to stand in solidarity with all People of Color, and with all those who are standing up to work for an equitable and free society.

These resources are far from comprehensive, but highlight some that we utilize most for developing an anti-racist practice in food and agriculture settings.

Yesterday The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) awarded $4M+ in matching grants to 13 municipalities and community organizations for climate resilience projects across RI. We are thrilled to be among the awardees! This grant will help fund our use of nature-based solutions to restore and improve climate resilience at our new Food Hub along the Woonasquatucket River. >>

What''s Harvest Kitchen
been up to during COVID-19?

Not just a local-food cafe, Harvest Kitchen is our culinary job readiness training program for under-served teens! Remote learning for our trainees began in mid-March and continued through May. Because of COVID-19, job placement has been complex, but we were able to employ our recent graduates in our summer session.

Harvest Kitchen is following all RI State requirements. We have modified our programming and are working with under-served youth in person for six weeks during the summer (July & August). Trainee responsibilities include shifts in our kitchen, at our farmers markets, and helping to pack ~1000 weekly "Farmers to Families Food Box Program" boxes for families in need. Programming has also resumed at the RI Training School (RITS) and includes opportunities in the culinary kitchen as well as incorporating math and science portfolio projects in the classroom.

We value Harvest Kitchen''s relationship with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and appreciate their continuing support. In this current climate, teaching, supporting, and empowering marginalized young people through education and job training is essential for a successful future. Negatively Impacted by COVID-19?

The Northeast BIPOC Farmer Relief Fund is now accepting applications from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or People of Color) producers with priority for those who use sustainable, regenerative or environmentally sound practices and who contribute to their community in some way. Funded by Farm Aid, this fund will provide $500 relief payments for up to 200 applicants. Applications will be accepted until August 10, 2020.

For example, yesterday our team re-measured our spacing plan and re-checked the big garage-style doors connecting our Market Halls with the outdoor market space. September is Hunger Action Month! We are proud to share that our team packed 13,000 boxes of local food for hungry Rhode Islanders this March through July, for distribution through the RI Community Food Bank & its member agencies! ?

Hunger Action Month is a time to stand against hunger. Sharing, volunteering, pledging to advocate, fundraising, and donating are just a few ideas for taking action this month. Learn more: feedingamerica.org

Minymeals dishes up mouthwatering Southeast Asian Street Food. In fact, Minymeals debuted its foods at Farm Fresh RI's Winter Market in Pawtucket just a year ago. And how did Pin Minyvong get started? By accident! Learn more in this local producer spotlight by guest contributor Malia Erickson. >>

For well over a decade Castle Hill Inn and Newport Restaurant Group have generously hosted our annual fundraiser celebration of local food - Local Food Fest! We were deeply saddened not to be able to gather together at Castle Hill this year with so many inspiring local growers and chefs. This event has become a very special summer tradition, and could not have happened for the last 13 years without the generosity, enthusiasm, and skill of the local food community.

Many of the chefs and bakers who have participated at previous Local Food Fest events have seen their businesses and teams challenged like never before during this global pandemic. Though we couldn't be together in person last month, the team at Farm Fresh RI is with you!

We thank you for the many years of nourishment and enjoyment you have provided to Farm Fresh and the entire local community. We look forward to a future where we can enjoy fresh local food together again, and wish you all the very best.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the public parks in Providence have been closed. Therefore we will be holding our market outdoors in the courtyard at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket until we are able to return to Lippitt Park. We feel it is very important to offer our customers an alternative to grocery store shopping during this time. Our Board of Directors have worked hard to devise a plan to keep our vendors and our customers as safe as possible; measures will be taken to enforce social distancing. We ask all customers and vendors to come to market wearing face masks and to be respectful of the social distancing guidelines.

The Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market returns this Saturday, May 2 from 9am-12pm. This season will feature many of your favorite vendors from past years, as well as some exciting new ones. For the first few markets, you can expect lots of salad and cooking greens, plant starts for your veggie garden (herbs, vegetables, edible flowers), fresh eggs, and more. Precautions will be implemented to keep market customers and vendors safe, see link below for details. Please wear a mask/bandana, minimize socializing while shopping, and come to the market only if you are feeling healthy. Thank you for your support, see you at the market!

Farm Fresh RI and the RI Food Policy Council recently co-hosted a virtual convening in cooperation with RI DEM and RI DHS for farmers who want to help their less fortunate neighbors and reach more food-insecure people in our community with fresh food. >>

A group of students from the Tolman High School Marketing & Management Academy in Pawtucket recently wrote spotlights about some of the local farms we work with. Market Mobile
Moving to Providence!

FALL 2020

Market Mobile team member Cayne Cabral plays "vegetable Tetris" on a weekly basis to ensure the local harvest is stored for freshness and safety before it travels to its final destination.

Since this past spring, Farm Fresh''s Market Mobile program has witnessed a major increase in sales of local food on behalf of farmers and producers. In this time we''ve reached thousands of new customers via our home delivery and curbside pickup services. We''ve also been packing 1000 boxes of food per week for the RI Community Food Bank. While our amazing team has risen to the occasion to help connect more farmers with more eaters - they''ve pushed our coolers and storage facilities to the max!

Market Mobile''s move to our new building in Providence this fall means increased capacity for local food storage, delivery, curbside pickup, and packing boxes for hunger relief agencies. We''ll have four times the space for local food at our new custom-built facility!

The soon-to-be-completed building will include easier access points for curbside pickup

New loading docks, minutes from highways and downtown Providence,
accommodate a variety of trucks and vans

Our new energy-efficient walk-in refrigerators and freezers
will quadruple our capacity to distribute local food

The Farm Fresh Winter Market
Saturdays 9a-1pm ~ 10 Sims Ave, Providence

With the help of shoppers, farmers, food makers, staff and volunteers, we are excited to be able to serve our community this winter market season with essential food access. Thank you for your continued support, even through the hurdles this year has presented. We will be open Saturday for all your Thanksgiving groceries. Stay safe. Shop local. Support small business. See our extensive list of vendors - now including Anchor Toffee!

Help keep our community healthy. Based on current COVID-19 restrictions, 135 customers can be in our facility at once. So the faster you shop, the more people we can let in, and the more income local farmers/producers can bring home. Consider sending one person in for your household. Say hi to friends outside! Food trucks, some vendors and distanced seating are available outside.

Sorry, dogs are not allowed inside the building per Health Department regulations.

A Grand Opening Day for Our Winter Market in Providence. On an unseasonably sunny Saturday in November, the doors to our new facility finally opened. After so many years of planning, opening the space was like taking a long, deep breath of relief. We had done it. The vision was finally a reality. Read more.

The African Alliance of Rhode Island and Southern New England Farmers of Color Collaborative (SNEFCC) are hiring a Project Coordinator and Project Assistant for their Business and Land Access Training for Farmers of Color in Southern New England. Apply by November 23.

The James Beard Foundation announced it will be offering $15,000 grants and professional development opportunities for food and beverage businesses that are majority-owned by Black or Indigenous Americans. Fundraising is underway, and applications will be accepted soon.

Usually our Healthy Foods, Healthy Families program works to educate local families on nutrition through hands-on activities. But 2020 has changed what "hands-on activities" means quite drastically. Despite the challenges, our Community Education team still met their goals - increasing knowledge and interest in local fruit and veggies among children and their families. We''ve been going strong with this program for 11 years. So while 2020 might have thrown us a curve ball, it won''t stop us from creating a healthier community of local eaters!

In this time of uncertainty, there's a fundamental truth that gives us hope-that together we can do extraordinary things. Over the past weeks and months, the entire world has been coming together to stand up, help out, give back, and heal. Whether that's buying gift cards from local food businesses, reaching out to help neighbors get groceries, or donating to community organizations, generosity has been helping the world get through this global pandemic. Farm Fresh RI, a 501c3 nonprofit, has been connecting local farmers and eaters since 2004. Now as farms and food businesses struggle to stay afloat, and the number of people in our community living with food insecurity grows by the day, we are helping local growers get more of their food to the eaters who need it most. A Harvest Kitchen Update. Since the Winter Market ended, Osbert has been braving the (unpredictable) elements to keep the Harvest Kitchen booth open at the Hope Street Farmers Market on Saturdays. Run by a farmer collaborative, the Hope Street market has returned to Lippitt Park after a few weeks of alternate locations, and is operating under strict guidelines for health and safety. Harvest Kitchen will continue to attend our regular markets as they reopen throughout the summer -- follow us on Instagram (@FarmFreshRI @HarvestKitchenRI) to get the most recent updates!

Yesterday, Lexi ran a pick-up site in Wakefield for SNAP/EBT customers! We teamed up with the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County and Thundermist Health Center to provide eaters a much-needed way to get fresh food with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during this time of extreme need. This order in Wakefield alone meant $1300 in sales for local farmers & producers!?

Real Food Jobs RI (RFJ) is working to create a ready, flexible, and enduring workforce for Rhode Island's food sector. Negatively Impacted by COVID-19?

The Northeast BIPOC Farmer Relief Fund is now accepting applications from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or People of Color) producers with priority for those who use sustainable, regenerative or environmentally sound practices and who contribute to their community in some way. Funded by Farm Aid, this fund will provide $500 relief payments for up to 200 applicants. Applications will be accepted until August 10, 2020.

Meet Jaime!
As our AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Coordinator, Jaime keeps our volunteers involved remotely and brings in those with food-safety knowledge to help in our packhouse during this busy season. When she''s not organizing and communicating with volunteers, she''s working hard packing up freezer items for the hundreds of orders we get each week - as well as making weight adjustments so customer invoices reflect the exact amount of weighed items (like meat) that they received. Around the packhouse she goes by ??freezer queen?? as she always has the answer when questions about freezer items arise.

Downtown Pawtucket Market

For years the outdoor summer farmers market in Pawtucket took place at Slater Park. This year it has moved downtown, behind our Harvest Kitchen caf?! Join us every Wednesday through October for a small neighborhood farmers market - and live music! Music series thanks to the City of Pawtucket, Pawtucket Foundation, and Pawtucket Arts Festival.
