We are one week out from the first serve in Hermosa Beach, where a $200,000 prize purse and an automatic bid to the 2019 Hawaii Open are on the line. The Entry List has been released and the full schedule will be announced next week. While some teams will be overseas competing on the FIVB Tour for Olympic qualification points, we are sure the AVP pros and the party will be rocking on the deep sand of Hermosa.

We couldn’t be happier to be greeting you from the Hermosa Beach Open on this gorgeous afternoon. There are so many incredible moments ahead of us this weekend. No, we don’t have a crystal ball, but we DO know that Hermosa knows how to party!! ???? So there’s no doubt that we’re in for some legendary memories as we launch the second half of the 2019 season right here in Southern California (AKA home).

When you’re in a town with as big of a reputation as Hermosa, you have to make sure you make room. That’s why we built the BIGGEST Stadium Court to date— plus, we need space for all the hardcore fans coming out this weekend. This crowd was born and raised with beach volley, so you all know your stuff. The pros always appreciate that deep knowledge of the game and can hear you so, keep talking! ???? There will also be some AVP fans who are incredibly educated because, well, they’re legends of the game. We’re talking about the likes of Eric Fonoimoana, folks. Keep a lookout!

With Stadium Court seats stacked, let’s look at the pros who are hoping to be spraying champagne there two days from now ???? Some of the mainstays of the top of the Entry List are out this weekend for an Olympic qualifier in Tokyo. But never fear, the AVP Family is still well-represented! On the women’s side, your top seeds are Emily Day and Betsi Flint at #1 (1-0 on the day), young-gun Terese Cannon and Irene Pollock at #2, and Amanda Dowdy and Corinne Quiggle (1-0 on the day) at #3, all of whom are hoping to take home their first trophy of the season. ???? You also can’t count out Sara Hughes, who is coming fresh off the unfortunate news that Summer Ross needs to step away from play to rehab a longstanding back injury. Hughes is instead playing with NCAA star and former teammate, Abril Bustamante. The two fought their way through a deep line-up of Qualifiers yesterday (because of a late entry) to get to the Main Draw where they sit at #5. How deep? Between the men’s and women’s teams, there were 224 pairs battling for just 16 spots yesterday! That’s the second-largest Qualifiers we have EVER had at the AVP!

But back to the Main Draw action! On the men’s side, fan favorites Tim Bomgren and Troy Field are coming in as the #1 seed (first-time as a 1 seed and looking for their first-ever title) followed by 2019 Seattle Champions, Chaim Schalk and Jeremy Casebeer. Sliding in at #3 and #4 are Casey Patterson and Chase Budinger, and Billy Allen and Stafford Slick, respectively. Patterson/Budinger are still looking for their first title as a team and have a STRONG crew following and supporting them this weekend. Allen/Slick are on the top of their game, coming off a strong finish of 5th at the FIVB World Champs. All of these teams have been playing an extremely tight game all season, so Sunday’s trophy could go to any of them.

If that’s not enough competition for you, the AVPFirst National Championships are going down this weekend as well. ???? This is an incredible opportunity for talented young athletes from around the country, who have spent their year earning bids to play alongside the pros on Stadium. There will also be college coaches here scoping out the next big thing, so these athletes may be young, but you can be sure they’re bringing their A-game. ????????

We’ve officially reached one of the peak moments of every season! It’s the granddaddy of them all, the mecca of our great sport: it’s the Manhattan Beach Open. Based on the crowds that began to converge on the sand early this morning, we know that the local fans couldn’t be more excited to have us back where beach volleyball was born. Make no mistake, these onlookers on the sidelines are anything but casual observers. The South Bay eats, sleeps, and breathes beach volley, and it shows. The pros are also fired up to be back in town! They’re ready to enjoy Shellback’s and Hennessy’s— right after they battle through the deepest sand in the world and the biggest tournament of the year to claim an eternal spot on the pier. Break out your best (okay, cheesiest) gold get-up, because this weekend marks the second event of this season’s illustrious Gold Series. We started with a bang in New York where Phil Dalhausser & Nick Lucena and the A-team took home the biggest chunk of that larger prize purse. Can they do it again? Only time will tell, though both teams started today with a win.

The Main Draw may have started today, but the courts were rocking early Thursday morning. To say yesterday’s Qualifiers were brutal would be an understatement. With a massive number of teams (try 186) vying for just 16 spots in the Main Draw, it was a long day filled with upsets for many hopefuls. Among the victors on the women’s side were Lindahl/Martin and Gaffney/Ross, now seeded #27 and #24, respectively. On the men’s side, #22 Landel/Priima and #28 Lorenz/Schoonover were two of the successful teams. Now they’re fighting through a stacked Main Draw bracket to make it into Saturday!

Though many pros are playing this weekend, a few fan favorites are missing in action. Tri Bourne is notably absent due to a broken hand sustained in the FIVB tournament in Vienna. As a result, Trevor Crabb has picked up Reid Priddy as a partner. Summer Ross is also still out with a back injury, so Sara Hughes will be playing with Brandie Wilkerson, who has consistently been a standout player on the world stage.

With such a talented field, it’s anyone’s guess who will end up on Stadium come Championship Sunday. If you can’t make it here in person, your destination to watch the 2019 MBO Final is NBCSN so set your reminder to tune in at 8:00 PT. Welcome to the incredible long weekend we’ve all been waiting for: the Gold Series Championships in Chicago! That’s right. We can hardly believe it, but we’ve already arrived at the end of August and one of the most legendary stops on tour. Not only is the prize purse bigger ($300,000!), as with all Gold Series events, but the finishes here determine the final auto-bids to the Hawaii Open. A number of teams have already secured their spot on the islands (think A-team, Crabb/Gibb, Larsen/Stockman, and Cook/Pardon, among others), but we’ve got at least 6 more spots up for grabs based on the best 2 out of 3 finishes in the Gold Series.

We have a 24-team Main Draw that are going head-to-head on the shores of Lake Michigan. We’re happy to say that this tournament has expanded since last year, which is great news! On the other side of the coin, we’ve been dealt some serious challenges brought by Mother Nature (Lake Michigan water levels are at peak height). Thanks to both developments, there are two venue locations: Oak Street Beach (OAK) and North Avenue Beach (NAB). Fortunately, they’re not too far apart so a short walk along the beach will get you from one site to the other. Come Championship Sunday, Oak Street Beach will be your one and only destination.

Although the sun is out and today looks like a banner day to play a little beach volley, the weather for the rest of the weekend might have some rain in store for us. If at all possible, you know we’ll play on, party people. But check out our Twitter page for the latest updates if the forecast doesn’t cooperate!

Mother Nature aside, we couldn’t be more excited for this weekend. The field is absolutely stacked! All your favorites are returning, from Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb to April & Alix and Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes. The competition was already stiff in yesterday’s Qualifiers, and it won’t get any easier in the Main Draw. As always, your destination to catch the action will be Amazon Prime Video. Come Championship Sunday, we’ll be live on NBCSN for the Finals. Expect to be fully fired up with all of these incredible Gold Series match-ups. A big aloha from beautiful Waikiki! Here on the beach, it’s the best of times (we’re in Hawaii) and the worst of times (somehow, we’ve reached the last event of an incredible 2019 season). Even though the Huntington Beach Open feels like it was just yesterday, it’s almost time to wind down for the off-season. But not until two teams claim the last championship here on Oahu!

Since last year’s inaugural event, we’ve been dreaming of returning, and the experience hasn’t disappointed. We have Hawaii Tourism to thank for bringing the Aloha spirit to the AVP. Between the numerous pools and lagoons and the picturesque sunsets over the Pacific, the Hilton Hawaii Village has also proven to be an amazing home away from home for the AVP staff, athletes, and fans.

We’re just a few hours into the Main Draw, but the competition has already been fierce. That’s not surprising considering that securing a spot in this event was anything but easy. The winners of the Huntington Beach Open, Austin Open, Seattle Open, and Hermosa Beach Open were guaranteed an entry. An additional 6 entries were based on the best 2 of 3 AVP Gold Series results. Rounding out the 16-team (per gender) Main Draw are Wild Cards entries given by the AVP and 4 entries from yesterday’s Qualifiers. Phew! Still have questions? Making this weekend all the more special are the number of Hawaiian-born players battling it out— think Trevor and Taylor Crabb, Tri Bourne, and the McKibbin brothers. You can be sure their family and friends will be cheering them on from the sidelines and adding some serious local flavor. We’re happy to see Tri has recovered from his hand injury, but that’s not the only thing he’s celebrating! A big congratulations to Tri and Gabby on their new baby girl, Naia. Feel free to enjoy the cuteness overload.

With so many talented teams, it’s really anyone’s game this weekend. You may notice Brandie Wilkerson is out for this tourney (she’s competing at an international event). As a result, Allie Wheeler has stepped in to play with Sara Hughes. On the men’s side, since Tri Bourne is back with Trevor Crabb, Reid Priddy is playing with Ricardo Santos.

The other big news that has had everyone talking this week is Wilson’s release of their new official game ball, the Optx. Two years of research has resulted in reworked colors that allow easier spin detection so athletes can get a better read on the volleyball. Since the ball is the same to the touch, all the recreational and professional players out there shouldn’t need much retraining to adapt to the new release. If you’re curious about the ball’s development, take a deeper dive with a special video profile we released this week! Though the AVP pros are getting their hands on the Optx this weekend, it will be available to the public beginning in January.

In 2019,

• Roughly 122.9 million people were online with the AVP- reading, liking, commenting, watching, tagging, and sharing all things AVP.
• There were 12 hours of national coverage with our broadcast partners, NBC and NBCSN.
• 30% more people shared the sand with us by tuning into Amazon Prime Video when compared to the 2018 season. Plus, the average fan watched for over 2 hours at a time. ????
• 365,000 fans physically shared the sand with us at one (or more) of our events.
• 1,590 more tournaments were held this season with the forming of AVP America.
• Roughly 42,000 teams participated in one of our Pro Tour, AVPNext, AVPFirst, or AVP America events.
• 4,159 fans upgraded the AVP beach experience with VIP tickets.

While 2019 brought a lot of joy and positive impact, it also brought some sorrow. This year our #AVPFamily was deeply impacted by the unexpected loss of AVP Pro, Eric Zaun. Eric, you’ll forever be in our hearts.

As we look ahead to 2020, our stomach fills with giddy and excitement because next year our sport enters the world stage in Tokyo. From our beach, the top men and women will rise and suit up in America’s red, white, and blue with the hope of securing Olympic gold.

However, their journey for gold starts on the AVP beach. This AVP season, our fans will get a few more chances to support Team USA and watch their dominating performances before they take on the world. Fans can witness these pros emerge from our beach and cheer them on to do great things for our country.

With the 2020 schedule released, the time is now to plan your volleyball vacation on the AVP beach. AVP Fan Group "Pound Town" Delivering Groceries to Seniors


One of the AVP’s biggest fan groups, POUND TOWN, has come together to help elderly people navigate this pandemic in San Diego.

Starting Stay Home San Diego, they have been delivering a variety of groceries and household essentials like toilet paper, eggs, milk, hand soap, and other hard-to-find items straight to the doorsteps of San Diego’s senior community.
