Stargazers Almanac 2021: Perfect for beginners, no telescope needed!

What can you see in the sky this month?

(Extract from Stargazers'' Almanac 2020)

Looking North:

Native American mythology has it that the Great Bear (Ursa Major), stricken by a hunter''s arrow before she was transported to the sky by the gods, comes down to the tree-line in autumn, her blood turning the leaves red.

The rectangular grouping of Gemini, presaging the colder nights of winter is now rising in the east.

Orange-yellow Castor is a superb pair through a small telescope but is in reality a ''double-double-double'' star, with six components in its system. Pollux is a red giant nearly twenty times wider than our Sun, and its exoplanet is a giant too: Pollux b is more than twice the size of Jupiter!

Looking South:

As Taurus the Bull lowers its head in the north-east at around 21.00, find on its back the sparkling Pleiades cluster, M45. Very young on the cosmic scale - about 100 million years old - the condensed but rich cluster of the Pleiades is superb using optical aid.

Rather faint watery constellations parade in the south, Pisces the Fishes, Aquarius the Water Carrier, Piscis Austrinus the Southern Fish and Capricornus the Sea-Goat.

The faint oval blur of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is now high above and may be easily visible to sharp eyes from a dark place.

Between October 20th and 23rd, in the late evening and towards dawn, occasional Orionid meteors dart across the sky. They appear from a radiant point near Orion''s upraised arm.
