Hi Oliver

Thank you for enquiring about volunteering opportunities at Give Where You Live Foundation. Our volunteering opportunities are mainly in the areas of:

· On-the-day event assistance (Surf Coast Trek in March) https://www.givewhereyoulive.com.au/events/;

· Appeal mail-outs (during work hours in May, August and November)

· Grant application reviewing during our annual grant round

· As a loaned executive in our annual workplace giving campaign (work hours) and;

· Occasionally other roles open.

Please note, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Give Where You Live team are currently working remotely and events postponed until further notice.

All our volunteering opportunities are advertised on our website and in our monthly GBlast newsletter. Please keep an eye out for these as they arise.

If you are looking to volunteer with an agency that provides direct services to people/clients, I would suggest you contact: The Outpost, Christ Church Community Meals Program, Geelong Mums, or UnitingCare Geelong. They all do fabulous work in the community and are run mainly by volunteers. You should also register with Volunteering Geelong who are the ‘go-to’ people for volunteering in the Geelong region.

Maria''s story, thanks to your donations

Maria helping out in the kitchen

Following a serious car accident, Maria found herself living in a wheelchair and having to build her resilience to cope with the loss she experienced and the impact upon her everyday life. Maria found socialising and connecting with her community very difficult.

Through your donations, the Bellarine Living & Learning Centre with a Feed Geelong Grant to assist with the delivery of the FoodConnect program aiming to improve the food security of young people who participate in the 3219 Youth Group.

Maria started attending the Centre along with her carer assisting cooking for the City of Greater Geelong Youth Space. Sher loves cooking in the young space and that it has given her purpose knowing she has contributed to her community in a meaningful way. Read the full story here

Your Donations at Work

A champion for those experiencing food insecurity on the Bellarine...

A shrinking local economy has meant that many families are struggling to afford food and provide for their families.

Drysdale Family Support spoke to us about the challenges faced by a family in the region.

"[They were] in desperate need of food. Both parents had good jobs but were employed on a casual basis and both found themselves out of work at the same time. While continuing to look for work their resources were depleted and their debt level became very high."

Thanks to your donations, The Give Where You Live Foundation was able to award Drysdale Family Support with a grant of $30,000 to continue to help families on the Bellarine through their Foodbank program.

Grant Highlights

Thanks to your donations the following grants were awarded as part of the Foundation''s recent Community Grants programs.

Australian Federation of Disability Organisations

Received a $30,000 grant in the Community Grant Round to strengthen educational, employment and social participation of young people with disability aged 15-19 years, experiencing disadvantage in Geelong and Colac, through the Passport 2 Employment program.

The Song Room

Received a grant of $19,978 in the Community Grant Round for their Passport 2 Employment program in order to support at-risk young students aged 5-12 years to engage with their school and learning and improve their social-emotional wellbeing and community involvement through participation in The Song Room Arts Learning program.

"The overall aim is for participants to graduate from the program with positive aspirations and attitudes towards life after school and to support students as they become ready to join the workforce, enhancing their overall life skills and job readiness."

"We are absolutely thrilled to receive this grant which allows us to connect students with their learning at a time when COVID-19 is causing great disruption in the classroom. Participation in Arts Learning also has a positive effect on?building?confidence and self-esteem, qualities associated with resilience and emotional wellbeing. We are proud that through our partnership with GWYL, The Song Room can provide vulnerable primary school students in Geelong with the best opportunity to succeed by being connected and engaged in their learning."

The Give Where You Live Foundation''s Community Connections Grant Round will open on Tuesday, 11 August with online application forms will be available on our website.

This grant round is aimed at supporting programs and services that reduce social isolation and/or support participation to promote resilience for our community's most vulnerable and marginalised members.

In 2017 Sonya signed up to the Give Where You Live Foundation''s Jobs Victoria Program in Colac so she could return to the workforce.

With some hard work, she succeeded in gaining a Business Traineeship through the program before becoming the Payroll / Administration Officer at the offices of Walker Panels.

In a poetic twist, Sonya contacted the Give Where You Live Foundation''s Job''s Victoria Program mentor (Leah) sometime later to let them know of another opportunity with the program and Walker Panels - which Sonya would be directly mentoring and training.

Leah then put forward Angel as a participant who she thought would be perfect for the role. Sonya agreed and Angel commenced her training and work with Victorian Group Training and Walker Panels in the first week of July -with Sonya coming full circle from program participant to mentor.

Food Security and the Covid crisis in Geelong

At the start of 2020, it was estimated that over a million Australians were already confronting some degree of insecure access to a nutritious food supply. This figure included people experiencing homelessness, people with disabilities, people with drug and/or alcohol dependency, young people, CALD communities, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As industries shut down and job losses mounted, the number of people facing insecure food supply grew overnight.

We know that prior to the Covid-19 crisis approximately 2,000 meals a day were distributed across the Geelong region. We know that this has become a lot worse.

How does your Feed Geelong donation help those in need?

Feed Geelong and Emergency Grants aimed to assist food assistance awarded over the past year have included the following.

Lazarus Community Centre

The Lazarus Community Centre received a Feed Geelong grant over the past 12 months to ensure their clients have access to regular, fresh, high quality, nutritious meals.

Not only does this assist with food security, but it also assists with the improvement of community connections by providing community meals in a shared setting supporting clients, volunteers, and staff.

Geelong Regional Libraries

The Geelong Regional Library received a Feed Geelong grant over the past 12 months to provide healthy snack options for young people in the low-income areas of 3214 and 3219 whilst using the library for study, when food insecurity may be an issue at home.

Th This program assisted in providing optimum conditions for young students to achieve the best results

Feed Geelong provides financial assistance via grants to those organisations working to relieve food insecurity across your community as well as the provision of food vouchers that can be redeemed through partners the Geelong Food Relief Centre.

The Feed Geelong Appeal runs throughout October and your donation is your opportunity to make a difference.

This year''s Feed Geelong grants will be announced on Monday 2 November and will be listed on the Feed Geelong website here.
