Army West Point Athletics announces that competitions for Patriot League sponsored sports will be significantly limited this fall as a result of the league's decision to forego intercollegiate competitions during the 2020 fall semester, but appreciate being excepted from this decision.

"I absolutely respect the very difficult but responsible decision made by the Patriot League leadership and our colleagues at member institutions," said Mike Buddie, Director of Athletics, Army West Point. "While this policy applies to all league sponsored sports, Army and Navy are specifically excepted from this policy based on their unique ethos and the role intercollegiate competition plays in their broader missions to educate and train officers to serve in the U.S. armed forces.

Not only has the U.S. Military Academy Corps of Cadets returned to the Academy for military summer training and the fall semester, cadet-candidates for the class of 2024 have arrived and are currently beginning cadet basic training.

Decisions regarding competitions for non-Patriot League sponsored sports such as football, sprint football, hockey, wrestling, rugby, gymnastics and rifle for example, will be made at the institutional level.

"My staff, working in concert with some of the finest military planners in the U.S. Army at West Point, have been working multiple scenarios for months now," Buddie continued. "Common to every planning scenario designed to allow us to compete this year, regardless of sport, is a mandate that they incorporate a tightly-coupled, holistic approach between the athletics department and the entire West Point enterprise to ensure the health and safety of our cadet-athletes, staff, coaches and loyal fan base remains the top priority."

The Army West Point football program will lose the opportunity to compete against Bucknell this fall. This comes less than a week after Princeton was dropped from the fall football schedule following the Ivy League's announcement that they would not be competing this fall.

"We are extremely fortunate to have such strong support from our United States Military Academy Superintendent (Lieutenant General Darryl A. Williams)," said Mike Harrity, Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Operating Officer, Army West Point. "Retaining the star competitions against Navy is a tremendous blessing. In football, as an FBS Independent, we have the ability to move forward with plans to compete this fall. The situation across the country, however, is far too fluid to know what our schedule will look like and who will be available to compete in the coming weeks."

No further decisions will be made regarding scheduling until there is a clearer picture of what college athletics will look like come this fall. Army West Point hopes to have an announcement regarding schedule updates soon.

Army West Point Football home games will be available to be streamed for free for current active duty and reserve duty members of the military through Army''s website provider SIDEARM Sports.

Current active duty and reserve duty members can use the link below set up an account through SIDEARM.

All internet browsers are compatible with All Access, though Army West Point strongly suggests using Google Chrome for the most optimal streaming experience. It is also recommended to stream the game using a wired connection with a bandwidth of at least 1000-2000Kbps (1-2Mbps). Further instructions and recommendations are detailed on sign up page.

For fans not currently serving as active duty or reserve duty members, all Army''s home games at Michie Stadium will be televised nationally either on CBS Television Network or CBS Sports Network.

. The health and welfare of our cadets is a top priority, and senior leadership continues to ensure that West Point is prepared and ready to train and operate in a COVID-19 environment.

. West Point has a test, treat and monitor strategy to underpin our efforts to balance risk to mission with risk to force during the COVID-19 pandemic.

. Nonpharmaceutical interventions and cleaning protocols have been put into place across the academy to limit COVID-19's spread.

. The players will be tested, and protocols are in place to safely play the season.

. The football team has not had one positive test since players arrived on post. In March, at the start of the pandemic, Athletic Director Mike Buddie and Senior Associate AD Bob Beretta anticipated schedule problems and began planning for possible scenarios to compete this fall.

. West Point has contact tracing assets to quickly identify any members of the community who have come in contact with a known COVID-19 patient.

. Visiting teams have coordination requirements with USMA starting 14-days prior to the competition. Those requirements include health Screening, restriction of movement, testing, and Non-pharmaceutical interventions. USMA is facilitating the arrival, transportation and housing of all opposing teams and limiting their ability to interact with any local community in NY.

Army West Point Football announced Monday its amended 2020 football schedule, which currently features 11 games, including eight home games at Michie Stadium.

Fan attendance for the first two games of the season will not be open to the public and is expected to be limited to only the Corps of Cadets.

Decisions on fan attendance at future home games will be determined at a later date and communicated as soon as possible.

If Army is able to have fans at Michie Stadium, details regarding a potential individual game sale will be communicated once a decision on stadium capacity is finalized.

Like all of you, I am eager for this unprecedented time to pass us and return to normal. Though spread out across the country, our staff and players continue to prepare in anticipation of a return to campus and the practice field. Coach Monken

Cole Christiansen, Elijah Riley and Connor Slomka each received offers as undrafted free agents from National Football League teams on Saturday night.

Christiansen received an offer from the Los Angeles Chargers, Riley''s came from the Philadelphia Eagles while the Jacksonville Jaguars extended one to Slomka.

The trio are the first to receive offers under the NFL undrafted free agent program since the secretary of defense endorsed a policy in November making it possible for exceptionally talented athletes who have graduated from a military service academy to pursue employment as professional sports athletes following graduation. Once approved, they will be permitted to delay their commissioning and subsequent service obligation to pursue employment as professional sports athletes.

"We are extremely proud of Cole, Elijah and Connor," said Mike Buddie, Director of Athletics, Army West Point. "They have all earned this opportunity through their hard work and determination while representing the Corps of Cadets on the gridiron. After spending 47 months training to serve our country, I am thrilled for them to have this opportunity to continue their playing careers, and am convinced this will only make them better officers when that time comes."

The graduates of each of the military service academies are obligated to serve in the armed forces for a minimum five years as commissioned officers immediately following graduation. The provision signed into policy in November allows the secretary to offer select athletes the opportunity to serve as enlisted members in the individual ready reserve of the armed forces while employed as professional athletes until such a time as the secretary tenders their appointment as commissioned officers in a military service.

During these trying times, we have engaged in critical dialogue on the outlook for college athletics for the 2020-21 season, and we continue to assess where Army West Point Athletics fits into that conversation. I know that you all have questions, especially as the fall sports season rapidly approaches, so I want to share some of our planning scenarios with you.

While the conversation continues throughout the entire sports world, it extends to different boundaries when speaking on behalf of our cadet-athletes. Every decision we make is in cohesion with the Academy''s mission to prepare our cadets to be officers in the U.S. Army throughout their 47-month experience at West Point. Unlike other programs in America, our cadet-athletes do not get the opportunity to make up for the lost time in their sports. Our Army needs them to lead platoons of our Nations'' sons and daughters, expecting nothing but the best of their newly minted platoon leaders. Recent announcements from athletic conferences around the country have had severe impacts on our fall sports scheduling. Still, we remain committed to finding a way for our teams to compete this year.

With that mission in mind, it is on us as leaders of this institution to do everything to get our athletes on the field, while making safety our top priority. This conversation has led us to evaluate our health protocols throughout the Academy. These assessments will require us to make adjustments to the way athletic competitions are conducted at West Point this fall. Our goal is to be transparent with these protocols and associated risks, allowing our fans to gather relevant information before deciding whether to attend athletic events at West Point (if that is an option). We remain confident that we can present a safe environment for our athletes, coaches, staff, and Army fans.

The United States Military Academy is uniquely equipped to address these challenges. We continuously confer with some of the most seasoned planners in the U.S. Army, led by our Superintendent Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams. In 2014, he led the United States Department of Defense response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa as the Commander of Joint Force Command-United Assistance. Keller Army Community Hospital, here at West Point, has its own Director of Public Health, which has been invaluable to the implementation of COVID-19 related protocols around the post.

As we move forward with our plans for the fall, we cannot ignore the realities of the current situation and must anticipate that conditions may worsen to the point where competing this year would not be feasible. We have contingencies in place if competitions are canceled or venue capacities are significantly limited.

In the event games are canceled and not replaced, or future regulations restrict the number of attendees allowed, season ticket holders would have three options to choose from regarding their previous payments for season tickets:
1) Convert the previous payment to a 2020 tax-deductible athletic gift
2) Apply payments toward the 2021 season
3) Request a refund

I reiterate that no decisions have been made at this point regarding attendance at Army West Point events for the 2020 season. Further guidance will be given to season ticket holders should that status change in the coming weeks. We have been working models for 100%, 45% and 35% capacity options at Michie Stadium for our home games and will adopt the safest model on a week to week basis as we continue to monitor best practices for risk mitigation. While I sincerely hope that you will consider the first option in support of our cadets, please know that we are committed to providing great customer service to our loyal fan base. We are well aware that the COVID pandemic is affecting all of you, so please don't hesitate to call the Army Ticket Office at 877-TIX-ARMY or the Army A Club at 845-938-2322 with any questions or comments.

A scenario without competition presents us with another challenge throughout the Army West Point Athletics family: our budget. There is no denying that a year without athletic revenue would cause a considerable strain on the Army West Point Athletic Association''s long-term operations. During these uncertain times, we are committed to providing an extraordinary Division I athletic experience for our more than 1,000 outstanding cadet-athletes in their relentless pursuit of competitive excellence. Donor support of the Army A Club creates a margin of excellence. It directly contributes to Army West Point Athletics'' ability to develop leaders of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country.

As General Douglas MacArthur famously said, "Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that upon other fields on other days will bear the fruits of victory." These words allude to the importance of competition in building our cadets into the great leaders that they can become in the United States Army. With safety at the forefront of our decisions, we will continue to do everything we can to support the United States Military Academy''s mission to get our cadet-athletes on the field in 2020.

There is no group of intercollegiate athletes in the country more deserving of our support than those at West Point. Together, with safety at the forefront of our decisions, we will emerge from these uncertain times united. It will provide us with an even greater appreciation for the relentless pursuit of excellence that our cadet-athletes display each and every day as leaders in the Corps, classroom and on these fields of friendly strife.

Army Director of Athletics Mike Buddie and Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced today that the 121st playing of the Army-Navy Game presented by USAA will be played at West Point, Dec. 12.

The game is being moved from Philadelphia due to attendance limits placed on outdoor events in the state of Pennsylvania that would not allow the entire Corps of Cadets and Brigade of Midshipmen to attend. As the designated home team in 2020, Army West Point will host the 121st iteration at historic Michie Stadium.

It is unlikely there will be fan attendance allowed at Michie Stadium beyond the Corps of Cadets and Brigade of Midshipmen. Ticket holders will be contacted by an Army West Point representative next week regarding game ticket status.

Army West Point football is the first team in the country to be offered and accept a spot in a 2020-2021 bowl game, as it will be headed to the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., it was announced after the victory over Mercer to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Army has only one previous Independence Bowl appearance in their program''s history - a 32-29 loss to the Auburn Tigers in 1996. The Black Knights are off to their best start since they began that historic 1996 season with nine-consecutive victories.

The Black Knights are slated to face an opponent from the Pac-12 Conference in the bowl, who will begin their truncated football season on Saturday, November 7.

This year is the first of three primary tie-ins with Army and the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl over the next six years, as the bowl and university reached an agreement for a primary tie-in for the years 2020, 2022 and 2024

Army West Point home hockey contests slated for Saturday, Nov. 14 vs. LIU and Friday, Nov. 20 vs. Holy Cross have been postponed because of the suspension of Black Knight hockey activities due to a small number of COVID-19 cases and subsequent contact tracing.

"The health and safety of our team, Corps of Cadets and West Point community is always most important," said Army hockey head coach Brian Riley. "We are disappointed with the postponements, but will continue to mitigate the spread and look forward to get back out on the ice soon."

. The health and welfare of our cadets is a top priority, and senior leadership continues to ensure that West Point is prepared and ready to train and operate in a COVID-19 environment.

. West Point has a test, treat and monitor strategy to underpin our efforts to balance risk to mission with risk to force during the COVID-19 pandemic.

. Nonpharmaceutical interventions and cleaning protocols have been put into place across the academy to limit COVID-19's spread.

. The players will be tested, and protocols are in place to safely play the season.

. The football team has not had one positive test since players arrived on post. In March, at the start of the pandemic, Athletic Director Mike Buddie and Senior Associate AD Bob Beretta anticipated schedule problems and began planning for possible scenarios to compete this fall.

. West Point has contact tracing assets to quickly identify any members of the community who have come in contact with a known COVID-19 patient.

. Visiting teams have coordination requirements with USMA starting 14-days prior to the competition. Those requirements include health Screening, restriction of movement, testing, and Non-pharmaceutical interventions. USMA is facilitating the arrival, transportation and housing of all opposing teams and limiting their ability to interact with any local community in NY.

A reminder that fan attendance for the first two games of the season will not be open to the public and is expected to be limited to only the Corps of Cadets.

Decisions on fan attendance at future home games will be determined at a later date and communicated as soon as possible.

If Army is able to have fans at Michie Stadium, details regarding a potential individual game sale will be communicated once a decision on stadium capacity is finalized.

Football has added a game at No. 20 Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, part of a home-and-home series, it was announced Wednesday evening.

Game one of the series will be at Nippert Stadium this upcoming Sept. 26, while the return game in the series is set for Oct. 4, 2031 at Michie Stadium.

The Bearcats are currently ranked No. 20 in the Preseason AP Poll.

The Black Knights and the Bearcats have met six times in program history and the record is an even 3-3 in those games. The first game was in 1963 at Michie Stadium, a 22-0 victory by the Black Knights. The last meeting between the two clubs was in 2004 at Michie Stadium, where Army won, 48-29.

The game on Sept. 26 will be the first in Cincinnati for the Black Knights since a close 33-29 loss in 2003. UC leads the series 2-1 in contests played at Nippert Stadium.

The addition of the Cincinnati game completes the Black Knights'' 2020 schedule, adding to a previously announced 11-game slate.

Game time and TV information will be available at a later date.

Currently, Cincinnati will start the 2020 season without fans at Nippert Stadium. The admittance of fans in the stadium later in the season will only be done if it is determined it can be done safely. There is no timeline on such a determination.

The Army West Point Athletics Department recognizes the Big 12 Conference''s decision to disallow nonconference away games. Given the decision, Army Football''s scheduled contest against Oklahoma at Michie Stadium on Sept. 26 has been canceled for this fall.

"We are disappointed to lose Oklahoma from our schedule this season, however we respect the Big 12''s difficult decision," Army Director of Athletics Mike Buddie said. "I am saddened for our players, coaches, alumni and fans to miss out on what has been such a highly anticipated contest since it was first announced. Given the rapidly changing environment in college athletics, we''ve been working on numerous contingency plans in the event of decisions like this, and have already begun the process of finding a future date to host the Sooners."

Army West Point Athletics is currently working on an updated football schedule and as it finalizes those plans the Ticket Office will reach out next week to current ticket holders with additional information outlining available options to retain account credits for future purchases, convert credits to a 2020 tax-deductible athletic gift, or request a refund.

Army West Point will continue to make decisions in the best interest of our cadet-athletes. The priority of Army West Point continues to be the health and safety of their cadet-athletes, staff, coaches and loyal fan base.

"We remain steadfast in competing this fall," Buddie said. "Competing in athletics is tightly woven into the fabric of the Academy''s mission. It supports the 47-month cadet experience necessary to prepare our cadet-athletes for officership in the United States Army. Unlike at other institutions, our cadets cannot retain extra years of eligibility. I will do everything within my power to ensure they get the opportunity to play."

During these unprecedented times, all decisions will continue to require constant monitoring and maximum flexibility while searching for creative solutions to achieve this goal.

. Army is riding a four-game bowl winning streak into Thursday''s contest, including a perfect 3-0 record under Coach Monken. In 2020, the Black Knights have won their last three-straight contests.

. The Black Knights and Mountaineers are meeting for the fourth time in school history.

. The Black Knights and Mountaineers have met three times previously, with the Black Knights leading the all-time series, 2-1.

. The first meeting was a 7-6 victory in 1941, the second a 19-0 win in 1946 and the last meeting in 1961 was a 7-3 win by the Mountaineers.

In order to be seated in the Army sections of the stadium, tickets must be purchased through the Army West Point ticket office. The presale through Army will begin on Tuesday, January 5.

. The 2020 season marks the 49th year of the CIC trophy, which goes annually to the winning academy (Army, Air Force, Navy) with the best record in round-robin competition. The winning team goes to the White House to receive the trophy from the President of the United States.

. Army has won the CIC Trophy eight times, including back-to-back in 2017 and 2018 for the first time in program history. Army also won it in 1972, 1977, 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1996.

. The Black Knights and Falcons are meeting for the 55th time overall.

. The Black Knights have had a 100+ rushing performance in 160 straight games. The next closest is Air Force with 33 straight games.

. Army''s offense ranks second nationally with 2,804 rushing yards on the season, third with 32 rushing TDs and fourth with 280.4 rushing yards per game.
