On Monday 5 October, as our closing lecture Melanie will be bringing together a panel of exceptional avant-garde jewellers to discuss key themes from the book.

Jewellery as an expression of wealth and power may have been worn by women for much of history but it is only relatively recently that professional women have had enough economic influence to command a shift in taste when it comes to design. Self-purchasing women are on the rise and what they want is often bigger, bolder and more powerful than the dainty demi-fine jewel gifted to them. It can represent an emotional and physical armour needed to do battle in today's corporate jungle and in this talk we investigate this new age of femininity.

With a panel consisting of Evelyn Markasy, Hannah Martin, Nicholas Varney and Bina Goenka this is not a talk to be missed!

To accompany our headline talks programme we're excited to present our new makers' programme. Join a selection of our Fair exhibitors on IGTV for studio tours and creative conversations as they share stories from their life and work. The programme features Francesca Marcenaro and Yeena Yoon who will be discussing storytelling in jewellery, and Maya Selway and Ane Christensen who will unravel how their paths became intertwined as they swapped the roles of silversmith and jeweller.

Watch Jacqeline Cullen carve Whitby Jet

With safety in mind, our makers will also be offering a limited number of special experiences to bring you even closer to the skills and techniques used by these master craftspeople. Experiences include a one-off session with jeweller Jacqueline Cullen, where you will get the chance to work with Whitby jet at her Cockpit Arts studio in London, or visit Josef Koppmann and six other fair makers at the Oxo Tower for a private view of jewellery. Places are strictly limited so please do book early if you are interested; go here for the full listings.

Our makers will also be offering one-to-one Covid-secure studio appointments during the Fair so you can browse work online then book a private appointment at your leisure. Try on the pieces, make commissions in person and secure any pieces you've seen online.

We are also diverting some of our energy towards increasing our support to our maker community, many of who will find these unprecedented times extremely challenging. Message from the Head of Events

Harriet Scott, Head of Events at the Goldsmiths'' Company, has published a statement about what the Fair team is doing to help our makers during the lock down: "...The coming months are going to prove exceptionally difficult for our maker community. As self-employed individuals and small businesses owners, they will be the most vulnerable. We are looking closely at how we can support our maker community during this period."

We want to see what our maker community is working on at the moment no matter how big or small. If you''re unable to work let us know what you''re up to - it could be taking the time create in other mediums, like sketching, painting or designing. Just head to Instagram share a short video or an image with the hashtag #GoldsmithsStories - we''ll share a selection of tagged content as stories with our followers. Simple. Marking 700 years

The Goldsmiths'' Company recently launched its first Company strategy. Marking 700 years is aimed at our members, our staff, our trade, and those outside the Company who would like learn more about who we are and what we do.

As the Company moves towards the 700th anniversary of the granting of our first Royal Charter of 1327, we are working on a broad range of new projects that we hope will be completed or well under way by the time the anniversary year comes around in 2027.

Goldsmiths' Jewelry Lecture Series

Rue Pigalle and Goldsmiths' Fair have collaborated to create a four-part lecture series that explores the stories of survival, endurance and innovation from the 14th-century jewelry world in London to the unprecedented hardships today's makers are contending with due to COVID-19.

Rue Pigalle offers art-and-design inspired luxury travel experiences for women, but during this time of confinement they have been inviting guests on virtual adventures into artists' studios around the world. This Goldsmiths' Jewelry lecture series is their latest virtual offering.

Isabelle Fish, who founded Rue Pigalle in 2010, has worked closely with the Goldsmiths' team to develop the course. Half of the proceeds from the series will be donated to the Goldsmiths' 1327 Fund, which was launched to assist jewellers, silversmiths and those working in the allied industries in the UK. "It's an honour to work with the team to create an experience that will be inspiring, informative-and will also help to support the talented makers during this difficult time," says Fish.

The weekly series, which runs every Wednesday in June from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm BST will explore Goldsmiths' storied history, as well as the history of women and silversmithing. "For centuries women were excluded from the profession unless they were a silversmith's widow," explains Goldsmiths' librarian, Eleni Bide. "But even then, they had to fight to gain recognition and to establish their hallmark. Today they are now leading the profession." The other lectures will be with a master and apprentice from the prestigious Goldsmiths' Centre and the final one will be a candid interview with makers Daphne Krinos and Ane Christensen and gallerist Christina Jansen.

We are excited to launch Goldsmiths' Fair 2020, the first ever digital staging of our prestigious event, held exclusively online from Thursday 24 September to Tuesday 6 October, on the newly designed and curated website launching the same day.

We are proud to be able to provide a platform for our exhibitors and thousands of visitors from around the world, old and new, so that you can enjoy the extraordinary works created by some of the best jewellers and silversmiths working in the UK today.

From 24 September, you will be able to browse the 2020 Fair exhibitors and a selection of their newest collections on our website, which you can purchase directly from the makers via our website. This year's talks programme promises to be one of our best yet. You will be able to view all our talks online (Zoom or Instagram), registrations go live today - more below. You will also have the chance to visit a brand new curated online exhibition of pieces from the Company Collection, to be revealed on launch day. Along with one or two other surprises.

Entry to the site is free, and tickets are not required, however by registering here for a virtual ticket you can ensure that you receive the latest event updates and reminders for the duration of the event.

Please note: Goldsmiths' Hall is NOT open to the public, and the event is NOT being staged anywhere other than on our website.

We invite you to take part in our exclusive online talks programme, accessible from anywhere in the world! Join us on Instagram for our 'In Conversation' talks between makers, buyers and curators, as well as behind the scenes tours of exhibitor workshops. Watch as pieces are brought to life by exhibitors in short video clips.

The whole ethos of Goldsmiths' Fair is about supporting some of the UK's most talented designers and makers of contemporary fine jewellery and silver - it is what we have been doing for 38 years this autumn. While life may not be able to resume just as it were before this crisis, we believe it is more important than ever to provide our exceptional exhibitors with a platform to promote and sell their work, supporting them and their businesses through this exceptional time. That is why we are delighted to announce, in this edition, our Fair 2020 line-up. We are, of course, monitoring the crisis very closely and continue to adjust our plans as needed. No matter what happens we want to bring to you, in whatever form that may take, the best jewellery and silver being created in the UK today.

Spotlight on new Fair exhibitor

Sian Evans is a London based jewellery designer. She studied jewellery design, silversmithing and goldsmithing and has won design awards for her fashion and fine jewellery design. Sian's work is inspired by interests in archaeology, fashion, geology, nature and sustainable technologies; the history of tools, materials and making have informed her collections since she started her creative practice in 1986 .

Sian recently gave an insight into her workshop as part of the virtual London Craft Week, see the behind-the-scenes tour here.
