Goodwill NYNJ Sign Up Information

Michael (pictured above with his Goodwill support team) is a young Brooklyn native with an Intellectual and Autism disorder diagnosis. This didn't stop his desire of wanting to seek employment, which lead him to Goodwill NYNJ in May 2018. With no formal job training or work experience, Goodwill dedicated itself to providing him with a foundation for building a fuller life. 

For people with disabilities, taking part in working life is an essential condition to an equal participation to society and the alternatives for many with disabilities can be life threatening (homelessness, hunger, incarceration) without the support of partners like Goodwill.

At the Goodwill program Michael enrolled in, he received free prevocational services including communication skills, how to work in a team and how to safely travel on public transportation. These building blocks helped in preparing Michael for real world experience and employment opportunities. That day came, after Goodwill connected Michael with Joya Studios - a manufacturer of beauty products to see if they had an open internship position that would give Michael his first chance to apply his new learned skills.

Luckily Joya was open and excited to welcome Michael with an internship and let him know that  if all went well his journey could end with a job within their company. His service had a positive impact on the business and after a year of mentorship and interning, Michael was hired!

A win that Goodwill is so proud to be a part of. 

This is one of so many Goodwill stories. In 2018, Goodwill NYNJ provided training, placement and on-the-job services to 29,841 people, including 8,988 individuals with disabilities.
