The Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education is excited to kick off 2020 with the release of our 16th edition of the Top Ten Issues to Watch report. As our annual hallmark publication, the Top Ten report identifies and analyzes the key education issues Georgia will be or should be addressing in the coming year. The highly anticipated report is widely disseminated to leaders and education stakeholders across the state and is written so the public can understand the complexities of the education landscape.

Some of this year�s issues include Georgia�s shifting demographics, school leadership, literacy, and rural poverty. Each issue is divided into three sections: �Issue Overview,� which defines the topic; �Significance for Georgia,� which puts it into context; and �Action Steps for Georgia� which proposes what the state needs to do to keep moving forward in its public education plan.

Please share this report with colleagues and friends in your network who are invested in addressing the most pressing education issues in Georgia. If you would like a copy of the report, The Georgia Partnership will provide one free copy upon request and will only ask for postage reimbursement for larger quantities.

The Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education is gearing up to co-host our "Closing the Widening Gaps" Critical Issues Forum with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce next Thursday, September 17 at 1:30 p.m. EST. If you haven''t already registered, please do so and join us via Vimeo Live to learn how the COVID-19 pandemic and the related economic collapse have challenged our workforce pipeline and how we, Georgia, should respond.

Our keynote speaker, Anthony Carnevale (Director, Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce) will be outlining the systemic changes that must be made to meet the changing workforce landscape, particularly the alignment of K-12, post-secondary systems, and the business community as well as structural changes to who has access to post-secondary degrees.

He will be followed by two panels, one exploring the implications for the workforce and the other exploring the role of public education.

Dear Joseph,

These have been turbulent weeks in our city and across the country. Once again, our nation finds itself standing at a moral crossroad with the world watching and waiting to see which path we will take. As I follow the events unfolding across the country and read statements from other organizations condemning unjust violence against Black Americans and the racially prejudiced systems that perpetuate such atrocities, I stand with those vocalizing their fatigue and frustration with current race relations. It has been difficult to capture the words to describe all my emotions, but what I can say is that racism against Black Americans and the tragic loss of Black lives is painful and it must stop - NOW!

In my 18 years at the Georgia Partnership, I have led with a deep conviction that all students in Georgia deserve access to a high-quality education that ensures they have an excellent chance of leading a fulfilling life. In January, we released the 16th edition of our Top Ten Issues to Watch report, and as we strive to do every year, we focused heavily on the growing disparities in our public education system, the increasing number of children living in poverty and the compounding issues of equity and justice that effect their education and their future livelihood. Since the report's release, our nation has been thrust into the international spotlight as our leaders wrestle with how best to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the boiling over of racial tensions following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery.

If nothing else, these tragedies have reminded us that we've overlooked injustices and inequities in our communities for far too long. We've also been reminded that we need our leaders from businesses, churches, elected offices, and nonprofits to step-up and lead beyond the rhetoric. Yes, it's important that we engage in tough, uncomfortable conversations. But then we must move quickly to strategic action steps to guarantee equity and justice for all of us. We have quoted for decades the famous words of Gandhi, "Be the change that you want to see in the world." It is time that we respond seriously to that charge. We must honestly look not just at our external behaviors, but also at what is in our hearts and minds.

Consequently, we, at the Georgia Partnership, will be approaching our work with an even greater focus on eliminating barriers and dismantling prejudiced systems that prevent Black, Brown, and impoverished children from achieving their full potential. For nearly 30 years we have been effective at putting a spotlight on important education policy issues, but now is the time for us to turn up the heat. You will see our intensified efforts in the next edition of the Top Ten Issues to Watch report, our Critical Issue Forums, our Field Notes podcasts, and our Education Policy Fellows Program.

Addressing equity and social justice issues to level the playing field for our children, families, and communities is a critical step toward providing better educational opportunities and life outcomes for students. So let''s ensure that our children are matriculating through a just and equitable birth-to-work pipeline, thus helping our communities and our country. Perhaps we can start by not just frequently pledging, but recommitting to, "One nation under God, with liberty and justice for all."

We are excited to partner with the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce to host a panel discussion with metro-area superintendents, Dr. Morcease Beasley of Clayton County Schools and Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis of Henry County Schools, to talk about student and family issues related to internet connectivity and access to technology. Join us this Thursday, June 11 @ 10 a.m. for "The Digital Divide: How Our Districts Are Keeping Connected With Students" to learn more about how limited access to technology is hampering online learning and what steps these superintendents are taking to adjust learning for the summer and fall.

Applications are now being accepted for the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education''s 13th Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP) cohort, which will begin in August 2020 and conclude in May 2021.

EPFP is an intensive professional development experience designed to equip emerging leaders across various sectors with the necessary knowledge and networks to be effective change agents in education policy. As we look across the education landscape in Georgia and assess the uncertainty in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, it is clear that we need more strong, innovative leaders who are equipped to serve and advocate for all students in our state. Over its twelve-year history, EPFP has helped develop such leaders, graduating over 200 Fellows who possess a deeper understanding of Georgia''s education policy landscape and can play more active roles in the decision-making process in the state. With the selection of our 13th class, we believe we have a unique opportunity to help develop the next cadre of leaders who will shape the post-COVID-19 future of education in Georgia.

More information about the program, including critical dates for the next class, can be found in our application. Applicants should complete and return the application via email with all required materials no later than Friday, June 12, 2019.

As we approach the end of 2020, I believe it goes without saying that this year has been a tumultuous one filled with unprecedented challenges and uncertainties. The COVID-19 crisis, the subsequent recession, and nationwide social unrest have pushed even the best organizations and their leaders to their limits. Here at the Georgia Partnership, we have not been completely insulated from these challenges, but I am proud to say that we have remained steady in advancing our mission to inform and engage leaders to positively impact education in Georgia. We have stood firm in our commitment to make Georgia a top performing state where all children have the same equitable access to a high-quality education.

Looking ahead to 2021, it is clear that we will likely be facing many of the same challenges we have faced in 2020, particularly with respect to equity. We recognize that to continue leading the statewide conversation on public education and ensuring all students in Georgia have access to high quality educational experiences, we need the ongoing support of education stakeholders like you. That is why as the Partnership nears the end of its fiscal year, we are inviting you to support our work through participation in the annual GAgives on Giving Tuesday campaign. From today, December 1 through December 31, you will have the opportunity to support the Georgia Partnership and help advance our core work and support Georgia's long-term recovery.

As you know, the Georgia Partnership is in the process of recruiting our 13th Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP) class, which will begin in August of 2020 and conclude in May of 2021. With our 12th cohort recently coming to a close, we offered several fellows an opportunity to reflect on their EPFP experience and share why professionals looking to grow as leaders should consider applying.
