Taxation, 280E, and Albert Einstein

According to Albert Einstein, "The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income-tax." Now that's saying something from the man who came up with the theory of general relativity.

Cannabis companies are taxed by Internal Revenue Code (IRC) 280E, a controversial tax treatment that is currently being argued in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

As first reported by Weed Week, the Internal Revenue Service is battling a major California dispensary on this very issue.

For now, at least, 280E is the law of the land, and like it or not, cannabis companies all over the country are preparing themselves for tax season.

A Matter Of (Quality) Standards

An interesting development in the international trade of medical cannabis. First reported by Israel Cannabis Magazine, and picked up by Marijuana Business Daily, the Israeli Ministry of Health stated that it is strengthening the quality requirements for medical cannabis imports. Israel became the number one flower importer in the world this year.

Tal Lavy of the pharmaceutical division of the Ministry of Health stated that Israeli authorities will start reviewing the quality certificates of suppliers intending to export to Israel "in the coming days." In addition to verifying that foreign producers are licensed by their respective national authorities, quality certificates, including EU-GMP approval or equivalent will be required for the post-harvesting facility, as well as for the manufacture of finished products.

Australia - as reported by Cannabiz on October 6^th, has also declared that it will now require all imported medical cannabis products to be manufactured according to Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) quality standards. According to the Department, consultation on these reforms is expected to commence before the end of 2020.

Gil Christie of Green Flower stated, "This is no big surprise and we are likely to see more countries following this example. In the longer run, this will only help the industry gain public trust and scale accordingly."
