Did you catch our blue t-shirts on the news? CBS Evening News joined us at service projects in Houston and Los Angeles to celebrate Veterans Day and showcase veteran leaders driving positive change in their communities. This past weekend, we were featured as a “Profile In Service.” If you missed it - check out the segment here!
Our Houston service platoons have had a strong presence in Kashmere Gardens and Independence Heights since 2015, connecting with and serving alongside community partners across Houston. In 2017, we shifted our focus to help the city rebuild from Hurricane Harvey. We activated teams of veterans and community volunteers to rebuild community spaces, install urban gardens, and conduct repairs - all with the intent to help foster neighborhood identity and build stronger communities after the storm.
In honor of Veterans Day, we spent the day at Betsy Ross Elementary School building four garden beds to increase access to fresh produce for students and the community. Over 45 veteran-led volunteers also painted murals around the school, organized classrooms, and conducted campus clean-up. We’d especially like to thank CarMax and BAE Systems for their investment in our Veterans Day service efforts across the country.
In the coming months, you’ll see us continue our service in Houston, Los Angeles, and beyond - including mobilizing over 100 veterans from across the country for Operation Bayou City Blitz where we’ll continue to deepen our impact in Houston, including continued service at Betsy Ross Elementary School. If you’re able, consider helping us fuel this work through a donation in honor of #GivingTuesday.
