2018 Capella Vineyard Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir - 97 Gold
A red wine sibling to the majestic Capella Chardonnay, this is a thickly curbed pinot, with a strong band of structural integrity: impeccable oak handling, bunch, cool climate acidity and fibrous tannins. The red fruit allusions are tucked in, restrained, discreet. They will come to the fore. This is highly impressive, shying away from the medicinal sweetness of so many Aussie pinots thanks to the tannic bind.

2017 Highbow Hill Vineyard Yarra Valley Chardonnay - 96 Gold
This is mid-weight and tightly furled, with flinty mineral crunch welded to classy oak, proving the structural enforcement. A workout in the glass reveals some stone fruit and leesy accents, but it is the kinetic energy and palate-staining length suggesting a very bright further for this cuvee.

2018 Capella Vineyard Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay - 96 Gold
This is an impressive contemporary expression of domestic chardonnay: a conflation of Chablis-like flint and toasted hazelnut, curd and stone fruits flowing effortlessly and long across a thread of juicy acidity and mineral tension. Burgundian. All augurs for a long future. A stamp of authority for this producer.

2017 Highbow Hill Vineyard Yarra Valley Pinot Noir - 95 Gold
A light ruby, beaming vivid aromas of strawberry, mulch, Asian spice, red and black cherry and sarsaparilla. Loads of flavour. Rich, even, but far from a loosely knit wine. There is an undercarriage of well massaged tannins across grape, stem and oak, corralling it all into a sheath of sapid intensity and full barrelled length. Very good.

Fecund strawberry notes careen along gently fibrous tannins, expansive and spindly. Acidity, palpably natural. Lovely structure and density to this. Light years ahead of the Yarra Collection. A richly tapestried pinot.

The scores and reviews are now live, and to say we are pleased to have the seal of approval from the big man himself is an understatement!

"To have such a spread of our Pinots and Chardonnays recognised in this year's Wine Companion is immensely gratifying. The scope and consistency of James' scores across these wines is the ultimate recognition of the hard work done in continuing to evolve the vineyards these wines come from.

This is our site in the lower Yarra and has been a focus of a huge effort to re-energise the vineyard, through work around soil and vine health, along with the initiation of our organic programme. Last Saturday we were awarded top Mornington Peninsula winery in Australia's best 52 wineries by Huon Hooke and The Real Review in Good Weekend - Sydney Morning Herald/The Age.

"This means a lot because we've put a lot on the line the last few years and I'm happy and relieved to see it paying off.

We've really stuck our necks out in terms of spending on vineyard and winery improvements and sustainability measures, including commencement of organic certification in several of our vineyards. I knew it would show in healthier vineyards and better wines, but to have it reinforced by moving up this list from 42 to 26 is really important.

To be the top-rated of Mornington Peninsula wineries, and also ranking highly in the Yarra Valley list, says a lot for our Pinot and Chardonnay wines from those regions.
